the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 17 tuesday november 7 2000 all the lehigh news first good scholars raise money to advance cancer research by paul kaser news writer theta delta chi fraternity is prepar ing to sponsor the 11th annual good scholar election to take place from nov 6-17 the good scholar election which supports cancer research is one of the biggest fundraising events at lehigh last year the election raised approxi mately 60,000 for the american cancer society all campus organizations are encouraged to participate first by selecting a candidate to represent the organization each candidate is sup posed to have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average if the candidate does not have a 3.25 g.p.a or if he/she does not wish to pub licly release his/her g.p.a the candidate may still run under the title of campaign manager the candidate then solicits votes costing $ 1 each from family members friends faculty and local businesses whoever raises the most money during the next couple of weeks will win the election there will also be tables set up in the lobbies of ulrich center university center 2nd floor west and the rauch business center mon.-fri nov 6-10 and 13-17 from 11 a.m to 1 p.m to allow students and faculty to vote for the candidate of their choice the candidate who receives the most votes wins an airline ticket to anywhere in the united states while the organization that he or she repre sents receives 1,000 to spend any way it wishes the second place candidate receives a certificate for dinner for four at the inn of the falcon while his or her respective organization receives 500 the third place candidate will be given merchandise gift certificates from the university bookstore and from bethlehem sporting goods and his/her organization receives 250 this is the first year that theta delta chi is sponsoring the good scholar election zeta psi had previously spon sored it but after being convicted of vio lating the university code of conduct and being disbanded a new sponsor had to be chosen theta delt was chosen because of its strong community service record and the large amounts of money it has raised for the american cancer society in previous years david kramer 02 the brother in charge of organizing the election for theta delt said the whole house has welcomed this opportunity to sponsor the election and is looking forward to helping raise money for cancer everyone is incredibly excited he said we always pride ourselves on the community service we do it has brought the whole house together and it is just a great experience for everyone dr alvin cohen a retired professor of economics and also a cancer survivor himself has been the faculty advisor of the election for all 11 years cohen is also a candidate in the election as he has been in past years i firmly believe that it is never too b&wphoto by nicole lamontagne john dupont professor of materials science engineering was recently honored at the white house by president clinton the award was the 2000 presidential early career award for scientists and engineers pecase dupont was recognized for his work with laser engineered net shaping lens he worked with fellow professors and students as well as with scientists at sandia national laboratory in new mexico for the lens project the basis of the project is that it allows parts to be constructed better and faster see page 6 for full story new process allows for online registration by jessy schocker long-awaited online registration process that begins this week still raises many questions news writer as students register for classes this week they won't be waiting in line instead they will instead be using the newly implemented online registra tion system the new method allows students to choose their classes and their sections online without the pre-registration process of the past that created a longer time delay the new process is dramatically dif ferent from last year assistant registrar j bruce gardiner said he also stressed the tremendous amount of work put into this effort led by registrar bruce correll he said the implementation of this process was quicker than almost any other school could have done although he did cite some small problems they encountered migrating between systems was a challenge gardiner said according to gardiner the new pro cedure for online registration is meant to save time according to the web site about the online registration students who want to register for any course that requires an instructor or department head's signature will not be able to register online gardiner stressed that certain aspects of the registration process will not change at all but there will be some new aspects students will need an alternate pin from an instructor to get into certain classes this is the electronic equivalent of a signature according to professor roger simon a freshman advisor and member of the history department it is too early to tell if the new system is an improvement in comparison to the process in the past simon noted that students have wanted to pick their own sections for some time and this new method will permit that if it works smoothly it should be okay there's a lot of anxiety about how it will work the first time simon said simon also said the two-week period makes it difficult for faculty he said in the long term the new registration process will be for the best but right now it is chaos matt estadt 02 agreed with simon that the inception con fusing estadt said there is a specific day for each class to register with priority going to seniors graduate students and those who have special circumstances that require them to miss many with the registration process here it's very convenient i've never had to register before and this makes it easier for me to learn murphy said there are certain conditions that prevent web registration including an undergraduate student signing up for a graduate level course or a student signing up for two or more indepen dent studies any courses that meet at conflicting times will also not be accepted by the system for any of these special circum stances students will have to revert to the old means of handling registration this online registration process is new to lehigh but it
