change says for mer e e head this week the dravo contract ing company of pittsburgh has been testing a model of the coun try's largest cantilever crane in the fritz engineering laboratory mr g f wolfe chief draftsman mr jacobi designer mr p g strohl estimater all of the dravo com pany and mr h c hayes of the united states bureau of yards and docks have witnessed the tests of the model the crane of which the one at lehigh is the model which is to be built for the bremerton navy yard at puget sound the contract was recently let to the dravo contract ing company with an estimated cost of nearly 500,000 the tower of the crane is to have a diameter of 60 feet and a height of about 90 feet the cantilevers have five trolleys all operated from the same control house the unique value of this crane is the transfer of the load from the cantilever to the support ing tower through a complete ring of horizontal rollers the capacity of the crane is approximately 250 tons the beam is 150 feet long tests measured accurately the model crane at lehigh is built to scale and is one twenty fourth as large as the finished pro duct the metals of the two cranes are the same and all dimensions are proportional the deflection and strain tests can be taken on the model to an accuracy of one thou sandths of an inch if defects in the design of the model are found they can be corrected before the ac tual structure is built the model was built to withstand a stress of 50,000 pounds and in the tests it withstood weights over that amount f r dravo 87 and r m dra vo 89 are president and vice-pres ident respectively of the dravo contracting company sophomores to visit local coke works the sextant is invaluable to nav igators and explorers in far away places of the earth to keep them tri touch with the civilized world stated prof j h ogburn of the department of mathematics and astronomy in a speech to the newly organized astronomical society wednesday afternoon in packer hall about 20 students and towns people attended the meeting when explorers go to the arctic regions or to south pole territories they sometimes leave without a sextant consequently they get lost and are never able to return if however they carry a sextant they are constantly kept aware of their direction from the north pole or from definitely known poiit said professor ogburn professor ogburn stated that the sextant is in reality a portable as tronomical observatory which weighs only two pounds and can easily be carried in a suitcase in conjunction with his talk professor ogburn gave a short demonstration to show how the sextant is used the astronomical society has ad vanced rapidly in its reorganization process with the assistance of r n van arnam and prof j h ogburn faculty advisers the group has been able to secure prof er nest w brown to address the club at an open meeting in the near fu ture professor brown is a noted english-american astronomer who is now teaching at yale r a stockton 35 trained to ap preciate that there are greater prob lems in life than engineering and technical ones dean j w barker of the school of engineering at co lumbia university former head of the department of electrical engi neering at lehigh declared monday in his annual report to president nicholas murray butler it is highly desirable that we should continually keep our peda gogical methods flexible to meet the changes in conditions which arise dean barker reported par ticularly is this true at the present time when our western civilization is approaching one of the most im portant crossroads in history a crossroad where it is to come into more or less violent conflict with another civilization rising in the east and founded upon a radically different thesis according to dean barker engi neering education is preparing to meet the problems which russia is thrusting upon the industry of the western nations the tendency in engineering is shifting from an in dustrial emphasis to human prob lems including unemployment pro duction control and general eco nomic stability dean barker's report agrees with the results obtained from the ques tionnaire sent out by prof hale sutherland head of the department of civil engineering this question naire was sent to civil engineering graduates last january asking for suggestions and criticisms regard ing the present curriculum mustard and littele increase in knowledge after four years lehigh dean analyzes scores for north american review that college students learn prac tically nothing during their four years at college is claimed by dean max mcconn in an article in the november issue pf the north american review this statement is based oh the results of the ex amination given by the carnegie foundation for the advancement of teaching examinations of the same kind were given in the past and it was found that freshmen obtained high er marks than seniors in many sub jects in 1928 these examinations were given to all high school seniors another examination was given in i°3o when these students were sophomores in college in 1932 a final test will be given to these students the results will show just how much the students have learn ed and retained during their four years at college dean mcconn says a high score in this kind of test does not mean that the student has obtained what we call a liberal education but a low score does indicate the lack of a liberal education because it reveals the absence of the founda tion on which a liberal education must stand electives cause laxities the probable cause of the failure of students to grasp and retain knowledge is that most colleges have adopted a system of free elec tives in place of the old time com pulsory courses said the dean most students study their assign ed lessons and very little more knowledge of things outside the regular curriculum in this case is quite impossible of course when students are given credits for pass ing a course in many cases they sell their text books and forget about the learning they received from them in some colleges says dean mcconn they are trying to do away with this unsatisfactory sys tem of giving credits for passing work they are establishing an honor system where students of high academic standing are allowed to follow or concentrate on a chosen field of interest this of course makes it necessary for a great deal of outside reading and special work these students are required to take a comprehensive examination at the time they grad uate up to now only those who are in their last two years at college are allowed to work under this honor system they have to de scribe fully the required work which they have studied no college has dared to put this system into effect for the whole student body as yet think of having to learn and remember everything in a course for four years and then take an examination covering the whole four years work university directory to be on sale at supply bureau the 1931 of the univer sity directory will probably go on sale saturday at the supply bureau in the alumni memorial building the price of this useful booklet is 50c at the bureau 55c by mail the directory which was to go on sale earlier in the week will not be ready until tomorrow due to a misunderstanding with the printer editorial and art material ac ceptable for future issues competition is now going on among the members of the three upper classes for positions on the editorial board of the lehigh burr students desiring a position on the board should submit their editorials to william m eyster chi psi or jokes to carl r giegrich alpha tau omega the editorials must run in three consecutive issues in order to be considered ralph benson editor in chief an nounced that any old suitable pic tures or humorous tintypes will be accepted for editorial or art mater ial the next issue of the burr is to be a lehigh-lafayette number any material either of a serious or humorous nature will be considered for publication mining metallurgical and chemical engineers have completed de tails for trip leave includes three days before thanksgiving holiday plans for field trips and inspec tion tours foj the engineering de partments to be held the three days before thanksgiving vacation are nearing completion the trips will include inspections of plants in wil mington vineland n j the party will be stationed at the ben jamin franklin hotel during its stay in philadelphia there will be 37 members in the party besides pro fessors theis diefenderfer and simmons mechanicals visit new york definite plans for the other en gineering departments have not been assembled as yet but the me chanical department will conduct a trip which will center its activities around new york and will probably visit several airplane plants tjie civil engineering trip al 1 though not complete in its details will in all probability include visits to the empire state building where instruments for measuring wind pressure and movement of the tow er will be inspected the new sew age disposal plant on ward's is land which is one of the largest ac tivated sludge plants in the world the new subway which is at pres ent under construction keuffel and esser company manufacturers of surveying instruments and slide rules the new york stock ex change and several new bridge among state and pennsylvania each president will receive one third of the profits to be adminis tered for the benefit of unemploy ment relief expenses of the game will be reduced to a minimum to make this amount as large as pos sible the prices for the game are 2.50 for box seats 2 for reserved seats and 1 for general admission tick ets for the game will be on sale at the graduate manager's office in drown hall beginning monday nov 16 the gante will begin at 2 p m the university of pennsylvania band will play metallurgists will study ex traction of coal by-products sophomore students in the metal lurgical department will take a trip to the coke plant of the bethlehem steel company in northampton tuesday afternoon nov 10 dr gilbert e doan associate profes sor of metallurgy will conduct the tour this trip has always proved pop ular with the students and forms one of the high lights of the sopho more year probably the most spec tacular sights is the unloading of the coal cars when the car has ar rived at the appointed position the wheels are locked and the car turn ed over on its side dumps the coal another popular feature is the extraction of the coke from the ovens the huge white-hot mass is pushed with a long ramrod from the furnace onto a waiting car it is then cooled by water spray the actual mechanics of the pro cess of separating ammorya and tar from the coke cannot be observed however the retorts and various apparatus in which they are ex tracted are very interesting the final products of the separation form a base for the making of dyes and cosmetics the gas produced in making coke is used in the blast furnaces and engines at the bethlehem steel works but quite an amount of it is used for supplying the town with fuel for lighting heating and cook ing purposes professor cram and becker to address the group the robert w blake society pre-medical club and eta sigma phi honorary classical fraternity will meet tonight at the home of prof percy hughes 819 tioga ave nue it is hoped that this social gathering will better relations be tween both societies and that a clos er feeling of friendship will result the program committee announced the program will feature a speech by prof e l crum of the latin department on the practi cal philosophy of seneca prof f c becker will also address the group on the practical import if any of modern philosophy af ter both talks open discussions will be led by b rabinowitz and j a tempest respectively at the close of the meeting refreshments will be served form study groups hughes at meeting explains use of gamma rays in testing metals dr gilbert e doan associate professor of metallurgy is the auth or of a recent report of the engin eering foundation on the method of using gamma rays of radium tci photograph the internal structure of metals in order to find any de fects the gamma rays can penetrate through steel objects 12 inches thick the report states by its use valves for high pressure plants and pipe lines can be made safe the success of the experimental campaign writes dr doan was beyond the highest hopes of the re search workers clear cut shadows of defects in the interior of steel ob jects ten and even twelve inches thick have been registered on the film tiny flaws only two per cent of the thickness of the whole ob ject have been clearly revealed films are simply pasted on the back of an object mounted in front of the radioactive substance for the exposure of course suitable films and screens must be used to get the proper result later the film is re moved and developed to show the shadows cast by the object in the path of the rays a thousand small objects could be exposed at once by simply placing them in a sphe rical distribution about the radio active source the ductility of electric arc welds in steel the quality in which they have been heretofore deficient has been increased more than 100 per cent in the last fiv years states dr gilbert e doan associate pro fessor of metallurgy in his article review of modern arc welding which will appear in next month's number of the metal progress mag azine dr doan was invited last sum mer by the editor of this technical magazine to write the article which will be accompanied by technical illustrations and striking photo graphs showing the application of welding to industry likewise the speed with which a weld is made dr doan writes has been doubled these two im portant advances one in quality and the other in speed of production have already extended the use of this method of joining steel parts to many applications from which for years it has been barred for example 24 steam boilers for the new u s naval scout chui sers have been built and accepted under specifications drawn up by the american society of mechanical engineers boiler code commission and the navy department numerous similarly exacting ap plications of the process other than marine boilers but likewise requir ing high ductility as the welding of storage oil tanks refining equip ment and pipe for pipe lines ar now commonly made arc welding has apparently eradicated its prin cipal deficiency dr doan says that in the past arc welding in high pressure boilers was not to be trusted but the new developments in this field have gained the confidence of the most conservative engineering bodies circulation manager chosen jack henry kaufman c e 33 was appointed circulation manager of the lehigh review at a meeting of the board tuesday believe it or not there is a le high man running a dry-goods store in china the man's name is chia ku yu 24 proprietor of the . ya tv chien drapery store chiae pu chieh nauchang kiangsi china lehigh men are scattered throughout the world like autumn leaves after a high wind there are hundreds in california two in the argentine ten in brazil two in the british west indies two in the canal zone and eleven in chile every five years the university alumni association undertakes the vast project of listing the names and occupations of all alumni it has been four years since such a compilation was made and next year will see the process repeated letters will go to alumni all over the world asking them for their present occupations many of the letters will come back for each year finds the ranks of the earlier alumni depleted by death about 80 per cent of the letters will be answered to the effect that chiae puchich nauchang kiangsi is home town of chia-ku yu 24 the addressed alumnus is still doing what he was five years ago and r still living where he liyed five years ago world wide cataclysms like the world war and the present indus trial upheaval have a tendency to redistribute the population and for that reason more changes than usual are expected to be found when the letters go out next year mr chai-ku yu is not the only lehigh man in china besides him there are perhaps a hundred more l f knight 22 gives as his ad dress belgian congo africa peru has a found in the land of harems turkey one in jo hannesburg transvaal africa and four in the phillipine islands one man a junior last year went to ha waii last summer for a vacation and has not returned mcconn to address university women study groups are now being formed by the bethlehem organi zation of the american association of university women townspeople are invited to join the study groups an announcement was made at the meeting on monday that dean c m mcconn will speak at the next meeting on nov 30 this meeting will be guest night mrs g b curtis the newly elected president gave a short talk on the aims of the association oth er work of the local branch was reported on by mrs james graham and mrs john barrett both of the fellowship fund committee represents lehigh at state educa tional convention prof percy hughes head of the department of philosophy and edu cation is now attending the amer ican state educational congress which has been held for the last two days at harrisburg the purpose of the meeting at which professor hughes is the le high delegate is to associate the high schools and the elementary schools of the state with each oth er and with the of electrical engi neering at lehigh declared monday in his annual report to president nicholas murray butler it is highly desirable that we should continually keep our peda gogical methods flexible to meet the changes in conditions which arise dean barker reported par ticularly is this true at the present time when our western civilization is approaching one of the most im portant crossroads in history a crossroad where it is to come into more or less violent conflict with another civilization rising in the east and founded upon a radically different thesis according to dean barker engi neering education is preparing to meet the problems which russia is thrusting upon the industry of the western nations the tendency in engineering is shifting from an in dustrial emphasis to human prob lems including unemployment pro duction control and general eco nomic stability dean barker's report agrees with the results obtained from the ques tionnaire sent out by prof hale sutherland head littele increase in knowledge after four years lehigh dean analyzes scores for north american review that college students learn prac tically nothing during their four years at college is claimed by dean max mcconn in an article in the november issue pf the north american review this statement is based oh the results of the ex amination given by the carnegie foundation for the advancement of teaching examinations of the same kind were given in the past and it was found that freshmen obtained high er marks than seniors in many sub jects in 1928 these examinations were given to all high school seniors another examination was given in i°3o when these students were sophomores in college in 1932 a final test will be given to these students the results will show just how much the students have learn ed and retained during their four years at college dean mcconn says a high score in this kind of test does not mean that the student has obtained what we call a liberal education but a low score does indicate the lack of a liberal education because it reveals the absence of the founda tion on which a liberal education must stand electives cause laxities the probable cause of the failure of students to grasp and retain knowledge is that most colleges have adopted a system of free elec tives in place of the old time com pulsory courses said the dean most students study their assign ed lessons and very little more knowledge of things outside the regular curriculum in this case is quite impossible of course when students are given credits for pass ing a course in many cases they sell their text books and forget about the learning they received from them in some colleges says dean mcconn they are trying to do away with this unsatisfactory sys tem of giving credits for passing work they are establishing an honor system where students of high academic standing are allowed to follow or concentrate on a chosen field of interest this of course makes it necessary for a great deal of outside reading and special work these students are required to take a comprehensive examination at the time they grad uate up to now only those who are in their last two years at college are allowed to work under this honor system they have to de scribe fully the required work which they have studied no college has dared to put this system into effect for the whole student body as yet think of having to learn and remember everything in a course for four years and then take an examination covering the whole four years work university directory to be on sale at supply bureau the 1931 of the univer sity directory will probably go on sale saturday at the supply bureau in the alumni memorial building the price of this useful booklet is 50c at the bureau 55c by mail lurgical department will take a trip to the coke plant of the bethlehem steel company in northampton tuesday afternoon nov 10 dr gilbert e doan associate profes sor of metallurgy will conduct the tour this trip has always proved pop ular with the students and forms one of the high lights of the sopho more year probably the most spec tacular sights is the unloading of the coal cars when the car has ar rived at the appointed position the wheels are locked and the car turn ed over on its side dumps the coal another popular feature is the extraction of the coke from the ovens the huge white-hot mass is pushed with a long ramrod from the furnace onto a waiting car it is then cooled by water spray the actual mechanics of the pro cess of separating ammorya and tar from the coke cannot be observed however the retorts and various apparatus in which they are ex tracted are very interesting the final products of the separation form a base for the making of dyes and cosmetics the gas produced in making coke is used in the blast furnaces and engines at the bethlehem steel works but quite an amount of it is used for supplying the town with fuel for lighting heating and cook ing purposes professor cram and becker to address the group the robert w blake society pre-medical club and eta sigma phi honorary classical fraternity will meet tonight at the home of prof percy hughes 819 tioga ave nue it is hoped that this social gathering will better relations be tween both societies and that a clos er feeling of friendship will result the program committee announced the program will feature a speech by prof e l crum of the latin department on the practi cal philosophy of seneca prof f c becker will also address the group on the practical import if any of modern philosophy af ter both talks open discussions will be led by b rabinowitz and j a tempest respectively at the close of the meeting refreshments will be served form study groups hughes at meeting explains use of gamma rays in testing metals dr gilbert e doan associate professor of metallurgy is the auth or of a recent report of the engin eering foundation on the method of using gamma rays of radium tci photograph the internal structure of metals in order to find any de fects the gamma rays can penetrate through steel objects 12 inches thick the report states by its use valves for high pressure plants and pipe lines can be made safe the success of the experimental campaign writes dr doan was beyond the highest hopes of the re search workers clear cut shadows of defects in the interior of steel ob jects ten and even twelve inches thick have been registered on the film tiny flaws only two per cent of the thickness of the whole ob ject have been clearly revealed films are simply pasted on the back of an object mounted in front of the radioactive substance for the exposure of course suitable films and screens must be used to get the proper result later the film is re moved and developed to show the shadows cast by the object in the path of the rays a thousand small objects could be exposed at once by simply placing them in a sphe rical distribution about the radio active source the ductility of electric arc welds in steel the quality in which they have been heretofore deficient has been increased more than 100 per cent in the last fiv years states dr gilbert e doan associate pro fessor of metallurgy in his article review of modern arc welding which will appear in next month's number of the metal progress mag azine dr doan was invited last sum mer by the editor of this technical magazine to write the article which will be accompanied by technical illustrations and striking photo graphs showing the application of welding to industry likewise the speed with which a weld is made dr doan writes has been doubled these two im portant advances one in quality and the other in speed of production have already extended the use of this method of joining steel parts to many applications from which for years it has been barred for example 24 steam boilers for the new u s naval scout chui sers have been built and accepted under specifications drawn up by the american society of mechanical engineers boiler code commission and the navy department numerous similarly exacting ap plications of the process other than marine boilers but likewise requir ing high ductility as the welding of storage oil tanks refining equip ment and pipe for pipe lines ar now commonly made arc welding has apparently eradicated its prin cipal deficiency dr doan says that in the past arc welding in high pressure boilers was not to be trusted but the new developments in this field have gained the confidence of the most conservative engineering bodies circulation manager chosen jack henry kaufman c e 33 was appointed circulation manager of the lehigh review at a meeting of the board tuesday believe it or not there is a le high man running a dry-goods store in china the man's name is chia ku yu 24 proprietor of the . ya tv chien drapery store chiae pu chieh nauchang kiangsi china lehigh men are scattered throughout the world like autumn leaves after a high wind there are hundreds in california two in the argentine ten in brazil two in the british west indies two in the canal zone and eleven in chile every five years the university alumni association undertakes the vast project of listing the names and occupations of all alumni it has been four years since such a compilation was made and next year will see the process repeated letters will go to alumni all over the world asking them for their present occupations many of the letters will come back for each year finds the ranks of the earlier alumni depleted by death about 80 per cent of the letters will be answered to the effect that chiae puchich nauchang kiangsi is home town of chia-ku yu 24 the addressed alumnus is still doing what he was five years ago and r still living where he liyed five years
