the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 5 tuesday september 19 2000 all the lehigh news first suitcase party well-received by noelia cabrera news writer students gathered friday on the university center lawn for the panhellenic suitcase party in support of logan keys a six-year-old whitehall resident who has been diagnosed with leukemia dean sharon basso initiated the lehigh suitcase party according to panhel president joyce hohenstein 01 basso had heard of other school's having the same type of event panhel had been looking forward to the event which they started planning in mid-summer initially we were thinking of having the fundraiser for the bethlehem com munity but we heard about logan's situ ation and jumped at the opportunity to help him hohenstein said at the event which raised approxi mately 3,700 logan was introduced as the celebrity of the day i think it was a great day it was very nice to see the people in the community supporting local causes scott keys his father said it means a lot to logan and our family it will help us through these very difficult times logan especially had a great time and this event really helped lift his spirits a comedian joe praino 01 was present in the beginning of the event along with the dj dermot carey 01 of sigma chi providing music for the whole event about 30 minutes into the event the big raffle prize for a trip to ft lauderdale for two was drawn by logan money for the trip was provided by panhel the trip included a limo to and from the airport the panhel suitcase party was held friday on the university center lawn to raise money for logan keys a six-year-old diagnosed with leukemia in august rotc members kick off year with leadership day in ft dix by bevin milavsky senior news editor leadership tactics and team-building were the main focus saturday when the lehigh valley steel battalion headed to ft dix nj for the field leadership reaction course flrc the leadership day reflected the pervasive attitude of the rotc program that is that motivation is key planning is paramount and time man agement and team-building are crucial when leading a squad third-year military science students ms3s were designated as squad leaders and were evaluated on their leadership potential these juniors were evaluated on their communication skills motivational factor team-building teaching technical skills and whether or not they were in control of the squad at the end of the day the juniors were counseled on what they did well and what they could improve captain ray dunning said he thinks the idea of the annual flrc is a great opportunity for the third-year members it's a way to get as many junior ms3s in a leadership position he said dunning went on to explain what he views as the benefits of working with the cadets i just love working with the students he said not many people want to serve their country anymore there are the leaders of the future officer corps i will have been involved in the training and commissioning of probably 75 officers drew durian 01 said the flrc is a positive way to kick off the year this is one of the easier events to start the year he said it's a good way to introduce them to what's going to be going on the rest of the year the 65 members were broken down into eight squads and rotated through the flrc tackling different challenges along the way each task began with the squad leader issuing an operations order which informed the other squad members of the purpose of each mission every situation was rife with added challenges and a time limit was imposed to see how much each squad could accomplish in an unreasonable amount of time the purpose was not necessarily to successfully execute each task it was more important to evaluate leadership potential dunning said whether or not a unit has high morale is evident to anyone he also stressed the importance of asserting oneself in a leadership position i can tell the spirit of a unit just from being around them he said and senate elects new members by kara wetzel assistant news editor the student senate is 11 members stronger after last week's election of freshman senators the elections held last tuesday and wednesday had a record number of can didates running according to senate president mark spedaliere 01 i was very excited to see such a huge turnout this year we had almost 30 people running for 11 spots and over 80 petitions were picked up spedaliere said by contrast spedaliere said when he was a freshman running for senate only 13 people ran for the 11 spots the newly elected senators will have their own constituency serving as repre sentatives for all of the freshman resi dence halls the duties for dravo house will be split between marissa gold 04 repre senting dravo a and b and katie klueber 04 who will take halls c and d mike d'alessio 04 will represent mcclintic-marshall a with brian coulombe 04 representing m&m b coulombe said he hopes the senate experience will allow him to become more active on campus i wanted to get more involved and be able to make changes i was looking for a good way to meet lots of people coulombe said lower centennial ii will have three representatives this year will kanjo 04 will be in charge of stevens and stoughton aaron kling 04 will have beardslee and williams as constituents and diana jeffery 04 will be representing palmer and carothers jeffery is excited about the opportuni ty to work with the senate i ran because i like to speak for other people she said i like to get things out there and be an advocate for other people and improve things laura stanik 04 was elected to be the representative for richards house melissa klein 04 will represent taylor
