the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 28 friday january 30 2009 all the lehigh news first finance majors prep for job hunt in tough market by deanna mcclafferty finance majors are making adjustments and preparations for the job hunt during the current eco nomic downturn the dean of the college of business and economics said the economy plummeted in 2008 and finance professors and advisors are taking steps to ensure that students are realistic about their opportunities after leaving lehigh for the traditional finance major this is going to be a more difficult year to get a position paul brown dean of the college of business and econom ics said these are unprecedented times still those in the field remain optimistic about the average lehigh student's chances provided they take advantage of their advice as well as the multitude of events coming up that deal with the economic crisis as events of this financial crisis unfold in real time the faculty of the college of business and economics continues to address the issues in the classroom as well as provide leadership for the community at-large the financial crisis page on the lehigh web site reads students do need to probably broaden their cur riculum so that it doesn't include just finance fi nance department chair richard kish said they have to make sure that they're improving their communication skills primarily their speaking and their writing they should also know more about accounting brown said he agreed that finance majors should be expanding the scope of their studies the very first thing they're doing in a big way is increasing their flexibility brown said brown advised that finance majors not only become more flexible with their skills but also in deciding where they want to work he says students often lose out on opportunities for jobs because they are unwilling to move very far from their current location despite slick conditions classes held b&wphoto by matt breitel students could be seen slipping and sliding on wednesday after a messy winter storm brings snow and ice to campus most classes were still held despite the inclement weather all-greek gpa exceeds undergraduate average by megan hanks for the first time in eleven years the all-greek grade point average is higher than the all-campus un dergraduate student average bobby buckheit 09 president of the interfraternity council said both the panhellenic council and the interfraternity council are thrilled about this news if you look back at stats from years back it shows that greeks are making a concerted effort to raise their gpas buckheit tim wilkinson director of fraternity and sorority affairs said data is compiled and analyzed annually to get overall statistics and information for house rank ings the results he said were only unique on one side it was not unusual for sororities gpas to be higher than all campus gpas he said but for the first time all-fraternity gpas were also higher than all-campus male gpas he said both wilkinson and buckheit said the social greek houses have made a conscious effort to improve their individual house gpas and the all-greek gpa in general this news is very exciting to overall greek houses it shows how standards have continued to increase wilkinson said kelly grim director of the center of academic success works closely with the social greek houses to tailor an academic support program for their members she said that she helps to create scholarship plans to keep students accountable for their own academic well being buckheit and wilkinson said they agreed scholar ship is taken very seriously by greek houses before the recent greek perception survey results odor forces u.c evacuation by molly o'neill b&wphoto by matt breitel officials evacuated the university center monday night shortly before 6 p.m due to a suspicious odor on the third floor the elevator on the third floor went down and there was an odor said carol hill direc tor of the student center facilities and opera tions said it smelled like burnt wire we had to evacuate the building because of the evacuation the cort at low er u.c was temporarily closed forcing many hungry students to leave their plates of food on a table and head outside dining services said they sent two chefs to rathbone in order to accommodate the extra students who were forced out of the u.c few students waited in the cold for the u.c to reopen after the fire department and police cleared the building the lower u.c opened for din ner but food options were limited the grill and center cort were not open and no vegetable sides were available to eat z'hara green 12 said she went to the u.c on monday night and tried to get dinner with a friend there were firemen there and they said we couldn't go in green said we didn't know why but we were in a hurry to get food so we left we decided to go to the hawk's nest so we wouldn't have to wait in line at rathbone university police were unavailable to com ment on the incident a third floor elevator malfunction forced an evacuation on monday night at the university center see finance page 2 see
