it can make everything better said zhang for the project zhang and his team used a cheap type of scrap iron called zero valent iron which they used to detoxify industrial wastewater in a university press release zhang said the project began as a pi lot test using 2,000 pounds of iron to pretreated wastewater following the successful pilot test the shanghai city government approved a grant to con struct a full-scale treatment reactor capable of processing almost 16 mil lion gallons per day of wastewater china isn't the only country look ing into this type of research zhang said the united states is attempting lehigh earns c on sustainability grade by group by allie rolnik ■grade improves by full letter from last year's d in a ranking by college sustainability group lehigh received a c grade on an annual report card greenßeportcard.org which offers interac tive statistics about the 300 universities in the survey graded the school's efforts to become environmentally friendly schools are rated based on administration climate change and energy food and recycling green building student involvement transpor tation endowment transparency investment priorities and shareholder engagement the report card was released on wednesday and is based on research from the college sus tainability report card 2009 lehigh received its highest grade an a in the investment priorities category according to the web site the university is currently invested in renewable energy and the environmental development of the community through funding lehigh also did well in the food and recy cling section receiving a b on campus dining services uses produce from local farms it offers organic options such as coffee bread cereal and snack foods also another reason for the good grade in this area was lehigh's use of 100 percent biodegradable to-go containers according to the web site lehigh's lowest grade a d was given to the transportation section the web site said the positive things about lehigh's transportation system are the planned people more likely to lie in e-mails study finds by hannah allen ■lehigh professor's study found that e-mails were generally less honest than pen-and-paper messages research coming out of lehigh university found that people are more likely to lie in e-mail than in communication through pen and paper liuba belkin assistant professor of management in the college of business and economics presented the results at the academy of management annual meet ing in santa monica ca in august she coauthored the paper with terri kutzberg of rutgers university and charles naquin of depaul university belkin said e-mail and paper are often considered to be on the same level but the researchers wanted to prove that people actually have different attitudes to ward paper documents and e-mail belkin and her research partners gave a group of students an imaginary amount of money they had to split between themselves and another group of students the second group was unaware of the amount of money in the pot but still had to accept the offer half of the first group gave their offers using pen and paper and the other half used e-mail both groups lied about the amount of money in the pot but the group using e-mail lied to a higher degree than the group using paper and pen belkin said this pattern may occur because people feel lying in an e-mail is more justified than on paper when you write something on paper there are more legal consequences because you write it with your own hand paper is more conceived as a formal document belkin said the researchers developed two hypotheses about why people are more likely to lie in an e-mail one contributing factor could be that when people use the internet social norms of behavior are forgot ten because of a skewed sense of social distance an other contributing factor could be that the internet has changed core values belkin said there is more self-disclosure more dishonesty and less sincerity belkin said when you communicate online there is a false perception of anonymity you behave in a way you wouldn't around your friends or family belkin said experts believe that there's not one ide al communicative medium but that certain channels are better for certain situations when the message is ambiguous she said e-mail makes messages harder to see research page 6 see
