they are just one of 68 organizations in penn sylvania to receive such grants ac cording to the pennsylvania liquor control board a total of 700,000 was issued for programs that focus on reducing underage drinking the site said bethlehem police lt joseph ki mock said the police want to make it immediately clear to returning and new students that breaking the law and disrupting the neighbor hoods surrounding lehigh will not be tolerated one of the strategies of imple menting this is for police to satu rate the neighborhood at the be ginning of the year he said i call them booster shots he said kimock said their strategy has had a positive effect on reducing criminal activity the bethlehem police hand out brochures and send incoming students an e-mail with the expecta tions and rules of the community and the state kimock said staff member charged with stealing gift cards from grad student by chris knight â– carol paul was charged tuesday by lehigh police with theft and receiving stolen property the department coordinator of mechanical engineering at lehigh was charged with theft and receiving stolen property tuesday after al legedly stealing and using three gift cards worth 450 from a graduate student in the mechanical department carol paul a 58-year-old resident of kunkle town signed a written confession tuesday to stealing and using the gift cards during question ing by lehigh university police according to the affidavit the three gift cards were reported stolen at packard laboratory by xiao chen a mechanical engineering graduate student police said inves tigation found the cards were used at sears and k-mart on aug 7 an officer with the lehigh police was able to view video surveillance from the stores captured on aug 7 and identified paul from those videos the affidavit said i was able to determine the suspect in the video was an employee at lehigh university in the mechanical engineering department carol paul the arresting officer wrote in the affidavit paul was brought in for questioning on sept 9 during which she delivered the confession police said she posted bail which had been set at 10 percent of 3,500 or 350 paul is no longer an employee at lehigh university said university spokeswoman sarah cooke the preliminary hearing for paul was set on sept 19 at 9:30 a.m at the south bethlehem magistrate federal grant to fund planning for south side parking retail space by autumn gould a new parking garage bus terminal and shopping center in south side bethlehem is in the planning stages af ter the city received a 495,000 grant the grant will be used for the design and planning stages of the facility bethlehem mayor john callahan received the grant from the federal transportation agency on sept 4 callahan said the city is looking for other sources of funding for the construction of the project which will begin next year the facility will contain a parking garage with about 1,000 spots retail stores and commercial offices calla han said trans-bridge and lanta bus lines will also be running out of the facility the bus station will be adjacent to the garage it will replace the station on mechanic street which was always meant to be temporary but has been there for over a decade callahan said it is just inadequate and does not give a positive first impression of the city the facility will be located on third street from fillmore to buchanan streets callahan said callahan said the line of stores lead ing to the new facility is not yet final ized but will be built on third street masking the garage as nice as you make it a parking garage is still unattractive so we're planning development along third street he said we're trying to repli cate the street to be as it was before the buildings were torn down by bethle hem steel josh bushey owner of clotheslines organics on third street said he has heard of a few stores that will be mov ing into the facility i heard brooks brothers but there will also be local stores moving down there he said it will be an interest ing mix of local and larger out-of-town stores jon clark owner of home and plan et on east third street said he wel comes more business on south side the more stores the better he said i would love to see more retail stores more bars coffee shops and restaurants callahan said the additional parking is necessary to bethlehem's future with our economic development and new and old businesses moving in we can't do it without parking he said bushey said however parking is only a perceived problem for his store occasionally there are a few spots on the street but people are not aware of all the other lots he said we have just as much parking as the business district on the north side clark said parking will be beneficial once the casino is built see arrests page 5 see transit page 2 artist interprets football to take on check online for everyday objects ranked villanova breaking news page 8 page 16 www.thebrownandwhite.com
