the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 2 friday september 5 2008 all the lehigh news first trays removed from dining halls to lower energy costs and waste by kristine moore lehigh's two main dining halls are looking to reduce waste and en ergy costs by limiting or eliminating the use of trays the cort in the lower university center has removed trays from the dining hall completely while rath bone dining hall offers trays but discourages their use david joseph executive director of student auxiliary services said the removal of trays from the dining halls was done on a trial basis dur ing orientation the trial's success resulted in the removal of trays dining hall trays have been removed enabling the university to reduce food waste lower energy costs and make our campus more environmentally sustainable jo seph said the removal of trays was tested for its effectiveness during the spring 2008 semester by comparing the amount of food thrown away on a day with trays compared to a day without trays on the days when trays were not available more than 200 pounds of food was saved from being wasted at rathbone alone joseph said it's a very simple lifestyle change that has been easily imple mented and our students have been b&w photo by allison echelmen very supportive of this green initia tive joseph said it's hard to argue with helping the environment the response to the experiment has been mixed among students at this stage in the trial while cur rently tray usage is voluntary in rathbone students may believe that trays are no longer available in any lehigh dining hall locations despite many students support ing the benefits of reducing excess waste for the environment some students still say they would like the trays to return to the dining halls i hate not having trays you a student at the cort in the university center carries his food without a tray tray use has been discouraged at rathbone and discontinued at the cort in efforts to decrease food and water waste beta becomes new home to pi beta phi by dana anderson pi beta phi sorority moved onto the hill this summer into the former house of beta theta phi fraternity following 11 years at the centennial i dormitory the house became open after beta was dis banded because of hazing allegations sigma al pha mv fraternity's house which was empty after other allegations of hazing at that fraternity will be used as an alumni meeting space said john smea ton vice provost of student affairs with the move all residential greek organiza tions are now located in houses on the hill the university made the decision in the 80s to move sororities to the hill as space became avail able smeaton said we wanted to make sure that the hill was a university resource and not simply the domain of fraternities he said smeaton said the university made two com mitments toward this effort one was to move sororities onto the hill and the other was to give non-greek students the option of living on the hill in sayre park villages leigh mignogna 10 the president of pi phi said that while upper cents had always felt like a home the move to a house on the hill was an un precedented opportunity for the sorority i think we're all just so excited because we were the only sorority that wasn't on the hill she said we put so much work into the house over the summer so it looks amazing pi phi member grace hebbel 10 said that the size of the new house will enable the sorority to hold open houses for prospective members and reunions for alumni i think that this move will prove to be a cru cial step in our development as a chapter hebbel lts tests new software to reduce printing waste by matt stayman library and technology ser vices is considering adoption of a quota system to prevent students from printing too many pages at public site computers the printing committee con sisting of four lts staff members who will travel to moravian college next week to speak with faculty about software that allows schools to monitor and control the amount of paper printed by students the printing committee was formed a year ago when a help desk attendant at fairchild martindale library noticed large stacks of discarded printouts and brought it to the attention of sharon wiles-young director of library access services jason slipp lts instructional technology consultant who also serves on the committee said he is optimistic about the opportunities afforded by a quota system last i've talked to moravian they had a few complaints but most students had stayed well under quota slipp said jessica rosen 10 said she is worried about the constraint that a printing quota would impose on students my major requires me to write 30-page papers she said what happens when i can't print anymore the committee has shown interest in a printer managing program called paper cut after running an experimental pro gram called green print which is designed to discard unwanted images and pages before a document is sent to the printer before printing with green print the user is presented with an in terface that allows them to select b&w photo by allison
