the courses are so regulated that the average student should not have to spend any time on his studies outside of class but it is found that in practice many students who are very much interested in their courses do extra work outside and of course boys who have gotten be hind in tfteir work do likewise the dean stated enthusiasm prevalent there is an intensive self-evi dent spirit of enthusiasm for the experiment among the students the dean remarked throughout the recent curriculum conference held at rollins the active interest of the students was displayed by their constant attendance at president of duke university and faculty advis or of the duke circle was elected national president of the honorary fraternity a formal dinner dance was given friday evening coming events by fred morhart ineligibility to ' participate in in tercollegiate athletics upon the re ception of nine or more hours of valentines was proposed to the board of control of athletics last monday as a measure to compel men to study and keep off proba tion if they wish to participate in sports the proposed rule reads no student who at mid-semester is de ficient in courses totalling nine hours or more shall during the re mainder of the semester represent the in any freshman or varsity intercollegiate athletic con test in any sport whose first sched uled contest is played after mid semester reports are issued the proposal was drawn up and presented by the comffuttee on eli gibility consisting of dr r c bull and profs j c long h h reit<jr and neil carother,s the board realizing that the present probation rule is severe in that it bars a man on probation from athletic competition for a whole semester or until he has passed the required number of hours felt that there is a serious weakness in the system which should be alleviated if possible fall sports not hurt the committee in its report on the findings stated through dr car others spokesman that this pro posed rule will not affect football soccer or cross country in any way whatever except that it will greatly help them by reducing the number of men now going on probation in june it will take away from swim ming wrestling and basketball a certain number of men but only for the period between the opening of the schedule and the beginning of the mid-term examinations swim ming and wrestling will not be greatly affected basketball will be hurt the most but it will also be greatly helped by the number of men it will save from probation at mid-years in the second semester the pro posed rule will take a gooti many men off the lacrosse tennis track and baseball teams but it will help these teams in two ways first these four sports all will have avail able for the team a number of men who without the rule would have gone on probation at mid-year's second by keeping men out of these sports when they are behind in their work it will save many of them from probation and eventual flunking out of college will save freshmen the rule will be especially help ful in saving freshmen from proba tion and flunking-out as interpreted by a member of the board this rule is meant pri marily for the student-athlete who has abilities for more than one sport yet is not over capable or am bitious scholastically it is a move towards attaining the real objective of college life — namely studies still if the man desires to partici pate in athletics he must not sacri fice his class worfc to sport this proposition would present to the athlete four scholastic barriers in the form of two sets of final and two sets of mid-term examinations which will have to be passed to the extent set forth in the rule before he is eligible for intercollegiate compeition dr carothers when interviewed on the subject brought out these facts as recorded — severe rules lehigh has very high scholarship standards for athletes the proba tion rule which bars a man on pro bation from athletics for a whole semester is very severe but there has long been a serious weakness in the system which has caused the loss of many fine athletes by flunk ing out of college the defect in question is in the situation which permits an athlete to continue in athletics when he is doing very badly in his work and to take up a new sport when he has just finish ed one even though he is down in every course he is taking recently lehigh applied for membership in the i c a a a a and when the application was un der consideration the association criticized our eligibility rules on this account they asked how we could explain a system that per mitted an athlete to compete for a whole semester when he was fail ing all his work year after year lehigh has lost athletes who got behind in the foot ball season went right on into bas ketball or wrestling went on pro bation in january were lost to all athletics from then on and finally flunked out in june this condition worried the board of control for a long time so the committee on cli continued on page four billy sheridan's grapplers are slightly favored to win the inter collegiate team title when the twen ty-eighth eastern intercollegiate championships are held in new haven today and tomorrow so state the sports writers of the new york times bethlehem globe times the philadelphia ledger and the baltimore sun this brown and white team has met many of the strongest teams in the east among them the univer sity of pennsylvania lafayette rutgers columbia princeton na vy and * the defending champion cornell and has remained undefeat ed in doing so the grapplers have amassed a total of 148 points to the opponents so this has been used by many of the sports writers as a proof of the strength of the lehigh team eight men from each of the eight colleges represented making 64 competitors will grapple in the pre liminaries friday afternoon in the semi-finals that evening and in the finals saturday afternoon billy sheridan believes that he is sending a team to yale that will win the title he states that princeton and columbia will run lehigh the closest race sports writers however also claim that yale cornell and perm state have shown flashes of strength that may upset all th efiguring of the dope sters peck and engel favored i believe that peck and engel have the best chances to win indi vidual honors states the lehigh coach pete peck has been undefeated this season and is the high point winner of the team having amass ed a total of 29 points with four falls and three decisions captain engel sheridan's other choice has also remained defeated throughout the six matches as the 126-lb representative he has got ten 21 points all of which were gained by decisions by a coincidence every winner in the eight weights last year has been graduated the second place winners who will return today are engel 126-lb class relyea col umbia 145-lb class clark col umbia 155-lb class freeman syr acuse 175-lta class while rotan of yale will wrestle in the unlim ited weight other veterans besides captain engel there are two other lehigh grapplers who are seasoned to the intercollegiates they are seal and shanker last year they filled the 165-lb and 155 lb berths respectively and shank er gained third place sheridan states that three col umbia men clark kinsler and captain reylea who have repre sented their university in the 165 lb 155-lbi and the 145-lb classes will each wrestle ten pounds lower he believes all these men to be strong contenders for titles he adds that princeton's colmore in spite of all reports of his being un able to wrestle because of injuries received in the state meet will fill the 118-lb for princeton however colmore was not among the prince ton entries published wednesday the university of pennsylvania athletic authorities consider three members of their squad to have good chances to gain titles they are sokolis unlimited mann 165 lb class and pappano 155-lb grappler sokolis has won five of six matches and mann five of his seven bouts one of his victories being over clark of columbia who was 155-lb runner-up last year pappano scored three victories was defeated twice and had one draw yale has had bad luck in losing her captain whiting who would have been a strong contender for the f45-lb title his knee was in jured in the yale-harvard meet last saturday rotan is now consid ered as yale's best chance for a title he will wrestle in the unlim ited class in which he was runner up to barfield last year has old history wrestling has had nearly three decades of intercollegiate history much longer than many of the oth er competitive sports cornell the present champion has the longest record of championships with ten perm state has seven yale six le high three and princeton one continued on page four high school and preparatory school students who fail to finish their courses on schedule time have little chance of being admitted to yale according to a report made by prof robert m corwin chair man of the board of admission at the university until now if a student failed to pass the entrance examinations up on graduation from his secondary school he passed a year at a cram ming joint and was especially pre pared to pass the entrance exam inations the staffs of such schools have learned from experience the type of questions asked by the va rious colleges henceforth it ap pears from professor corwin's statement students will have to pass their entrance examinations without an extra year of prepara tion if they are to be admitted to yale \ who goes to college " who shall go to college is an ever recurrent question among those engaged in educational work professor corwin says the solu tion as far as it presents itself to boards of admission would be sim pler if scholastic factors alone were involved and if parents and pupils would accept as conclusive the re turns as shown in the school and admission examination records and would act on the frank opinion of those who have directed the stu dent's preparatory course monday march 16 8 p m stanley thomas will give the last of this year's series of college lectures on the health of the public in packard audi torium yale excludes high school men who fail to finish work on time the notion seems to prevail ra ther generally he said that an ad ditional year of work at a fitting school specializing in smaller class es and individual instruction will remedy any evidence of a previous lack of ability or incentive it is however becoming fess possible each year to give encouragement to those applicents who find it either expedient or necessary to spend an additional or fifth year in repairing a weak record for it has been ne cessary to refuse admission each year to an increasing number of those who failed to finish their sec ondary school course on schedule time or in regular order asks question the question is frequently asked usually by those who are advocat ing the admission of an applicant whose record is not high does the board of admissions take no account of character ?' x the answer is that nothing is considered more impor tant but tha the type of charac ter which makes the greatest ap peal to the board is one which has been transmuted into a good record moreover the ardor of an applicant's desire for a college course can be more safely judged by the quality of his sdiool record than by the importunity of parents and friends it is probably not due to chance that testimonials of char acter are most abundant and most urgent among the credentials of un promosing applicants bethlehem pa friday march 13 connected with the new proposal on athletic eligibility or are in a posi tion to be affected by it if passed by the board of control of ath letics prof howard h reiter mem ber of the committee that compiled the rule in the long run it will avork out for the best there is something radically wrong with the present system and this rule should help the situation we are saving the boy the parents and the col lege by instigating a forewarning and limitation a austin tate head coach of football it's o k with me we will all benefit ruggles says unfair harry ruggles student member of the board of control of ath letics i am afraid that this may turn out as in the big three ath letes may play a part of the season and be out the rest of the time it puts a man in the position where he will have four chances against his playing two mid-semester exam periods and two sets of finals as against two to get back into the game perhaps the pro regulations could be lightened and the mid terms made harder robert adams baseball coach i agree with ruggles if there are two more chances to go on athletic pro there should be two more chances to get off dean c m mcconn ex-offcio member of standing of students committee it strikes me as a good move it should be beneficial to athletics and scholarship it should be more effective than sports limitation john engel captain of wrestling advice to keep men working while season is in progress i am afraid that there may develop a descrim ination as some professors carry men during season and expect re sults at the end of the term kanaly favors move morris e kanaly track coach good it will make athletes realize that college is more than sport par ticipation it is only fair to the boy that scholarship be put above ath letics sports are like business someone is always waiting to fill vacant places libert chandler captain-elect of cross-country i agree with coach kanaly it is an incentive to keep off pro it should help freshmen to realize that there must be a balance between athletics and scholarship mort lamb captain of track it should keep students working early in the semester and thus give him a good start jack petrikin secretary of the board anything is good that will make the boy keep up from day to day , billy sheridan brown and white wrestling mentor was optimistic of lehigh's chances in the intercolle giate wrestling bouts in his infor mal talk before a dinner given by the lehigh home club wednesday evening at the hotel traylor al lentown lehigh enters the intercolle giates with a handicap as the brown and white team is favored to win and that is always dangerous to a wrestling team because the other wrestlers concentrate all their ef forts on the favorite rfnes billy said as an example of this bjlly cited last year's intercollegiates perm state was favored to win as they had been undefeated during the sea son five of their seven men failed to get over one point in the inter collegiate bouts and they finished in a tie for fourth place columbia and cornell will give lehigh its greatest opposition according to sherida/i however with an even break the team ought to be successful as the brown and white team is the only one to enter the matches undefeat ed billy concluded this is the first time in a num ber of years that the lehigh home club has met in a city other than bethlehem samuel w
