the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 2 friday january 25 2008 all the lehigh news first sorority rush numbers up slightly from 2007's low by katy jacobson a total of 199 freshmen and sophomore women received a sorority bid after this year's re cruitment process which lasted from jan 8 to jan 12 the number of participants be gan at 272 out of the 439 women in the freshman class and at some point 61 women withdrew from the process said greek life coor dinator tiffany showalter showalter said new member class sizes at this time are as fol lows for each chapter alpha chi omega 26 alpha gamma delta 28 alpha omicron pi 28 alpha phi 21 delta gamma 23 gam ma phi beta 24 kappa alpha theta 23 pi beta phi 23 showalter also said that out of the 200 women who participated in bid matching 199 women were matched to a chapter through the formal recruitment process vice president of recruitment for the panhellenic council megan schatzman 08 said in order to be successful in rush one must go through the process faithfully that means that one must go to the maximum number of parties they were invited to schatzman said if they went through the process faith fully they were invited to join a chapter tim wilkinson director of the fire in off-campus house displaces grad students by elaine hardenstine a fire in a student home on east fourth street displaced five graduate students sunday morning the fire started in 216 e fourth st and then spread to the adjacent house where the stu dents resided four residents and two visitors were in the house at the time of the fire no injuries were reported bethlehem deputy fire com missioner robert novatnack said the fire began in the kitchen area of the home the fire caused heavy damage to the roof and the second-floor back wall novatnack said the basement filled up with water two feet deep after a pipe broke the fire is being ruled acci dental novatnack said christine boblenz a gradu ate student and resident of the house said water ruined elec tronics smoke stained clothing and many other items are buried under piles of rubble when the smoke detectors started going off boblenz said the four women evacuated the house and the bethlehem fire department and american red cross arrived soon after b&w photo by nowell kahle everyone got out quickly and safely and even considered re-entering to get some things but because it started filling with smoke they stayed out boblenz said boblenz was away for the weekend a friend notified her about the fire on sunday around 1 p.m i'm glad i didn't have to experience being in the house it would have been very scary boblenz said gregory warmack owner of the adjacent property is an artist his house contained a lot of a fire began at 216 e fourth st and spread to the adjacent part of the house 214 e fourth st leaving five graduate students and one local artist without their homes and personal belongings junior faces allegations of sexual assault by chris knight and julie stewart daniel glaser 09 allegedly sexually assaulted two female residents sunday morning after being signed in by two other female residents at a boston uni versity dormitory according to an e-mail from officials at boston university glaser pled not guilty on tuesday to charges of two counts of unarmed burglary one count of breaking and entering and two counts of indecent assault and battery all of which are felony charges aaron goodliss of brook line mass who had accom panied glaser also pled not guilty to charges of breaking and entering and possession of marijuana according to a press release by the suffolk county mass district attorney glaser had been signed in to the residence hall at about 2:30 a.m sunday but had been asked to leave later glaser and goodliss allegedly were signed into claf lin hall dormitory by two other female students who did know them according to an interview with boston university dean of students kenneth elmore by the daily free press an independent driving drunk could cost offenders their job by chris knight when andrew drifted over the yellow divider line on his drive back to his off-campus house one night in 1993 police immediately suspected drunk driving the police officer pulled him to the shoul der of the road near one of the gates to the hill and gave him a field sobriety test which he failed at the testing center his blood alcohol con tent was 0.11 only slightly over the legal limit of 0.08 andrew was charged with driving under the influence the night leading to his arrest began at theta delta chi fraternity where he was a brother he drank beer there his impairment rose even though he was arrested with a low bac alcohol interferes * name has been changed with voluntary eye movement and the ability to op erate a vehicle at the level of impairment when he was arrested his reaction time judgment and vision were all significantly affected still the drive home was short and getting a ride home would mean he'd have to come back in the morning - a minor inconvenience he'd been drunk and made the trip many times before and had never been caught i knew i was going home and i lived just out side campus andrew says i wasn't going to go more than 15 miles per hour so i thought i'd be fine after being arrested for drunk driving andrew was embarrassed and faced thousands in
