the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 19 tuesday november 13 2007 all the lehigh news first police apprehend robbery suspect by julie stewart ■a lehigh student was robbed wednes day a search of the suspect's residence revealed property stolen from students within the past few weeks at approximately 9:30 p.m on wednesday a le high student was robbed near the corner of fourth and new streets the student was not injured said edward shupp chief of lehigh police in an e-mail safety bulletin thursday members of the lehigh university police department apprehended the suspect after a brief foot pursuit and the suspect's residence was searched police said property stolen from lehigh students over the past few weeks was found in the search police said shupp said the suspect was apprehended quickly be cause the bethlehem and lehigh police departments in creased patrols in the neighborhoods around campus the bethlehem police department will continue to in vestigate and the lehigh police department is expected to file charges for the previous crimes police said there have been numerous crimes at both locations we have been investigating shupp said as of friday charges had not yet been filed shupp said other suspects are still at large he said the investigation is in its early stages but is mov ing along at a good pace shupp said he could make no further comments on the case to protect the integrity of the investigation as the police are in the process of gathering information about the incident anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the lehigh police at 610-758-4200 or the bethle hem police at 610-865-7187 shupp's nov 8 e-mail safety bulletin to the campus community about the incident was the third in the past three weeks alerting the campus community that a lehigh student had been robbed on or near campus those robberies occurred oct 26 and oct 27 on montclair avenue and packer avenue respectively in the oct 26 robbery a student's purse and its contents were taken in the oct 27 robbery a student's cell phone was taken police said the victims were not injured police said part-time mba ranks no 5 in national poll by rachel sachs business week magazine ranked lehigh's part-time mas ter's of business administration program fifth in the nation and first in the mid-atlantic region in a list the magazine published on its web site nov 1 paul brown dean of the col lege of business and economics said the list marked lehigh's place among other university mba programs i think it says that we clearly play in the big leagues brown said lehigh ranked against schools such as new york uni versity the university of south ern california the university of california los angeles emory university and the university of chicago the ranking is the first time business week rated part-time business programs lehigh's part-time mba program offers students the flex ibility of pursuing a career while attending the university at night or on weekends jennifer marshall a part-time graduate student said she chose lehigh because of its flexible hours marshall said the reputation of the university itself was also a contributing factor in her deci sion to attend lehigh mary taglang director of graduate student programs said the only difference between the full-time and part-time mba pro gram is the time it takes for the student to complete the courses required for the degree taglang was out of the coun try when the business week rank ings were released she said she was not sur prised when she called the office and heard the results i always knew this pro gram was very strong taglang said and now we have outside validation brown said he believes le high deserves this ranking due to the distinctiveness of the program brown said substantial interac tion occurs between faculty and students and the program inte grates traditional disciplines marshall said she agrees she said team teaching is used so two professors from differ ent backgrounds offer varying perspectives brown said students are hap py with the rankings he described running into the student president of the mba class brown said he could see his smile from 100 feet away tony silfani a lehigh mba student said the ranking exhibits the hard work of the students in the program this is years and years in the plans for mid-range goals related to global initiatives diversity on campus enrollment outreach and university gover nance at lehigh at a town-hall style meeting in packard labora tory 101 thursday long-term goals included identifying optimal faculty and staff improving student life and increasing research and graduate programs supporting goals included de veloping physical and information technology infrastructures that support the university's needs the global initiative involves a multi-directional approach to ensure that lehigh's students are prepared for and involved in the international community gast said the guiding principle is to ensure that internationalization in all its dimensions pervades the university's intellectual cultural and social life and becomes a sig nature of lehigh gast said jim hwang professor of elec trical engineering said the global initiative is an important step for lehigh hwang said other schools such as drexel and temple universities are heavily involved in interna tional programs lehigh's done nothing in that regard to date he said gast said diversity can be achieved by working to build a community that is more reflective of society
