the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 13 tuesday october 23 2007 all the lehigh news first more ideas vital in push to alter campus climate by kathryn jacobson since the release of the climate survey re sults in march many groups have collaborated to use the findings in an attempt to change the campus the survey showed evidence of discrimina tion against students faculty and staff based on certain characteristics such as status race gender sexual preference and socioeconomic class in early september president alice gast sent a campus-wide welcome e-mail that ad dressed lehigh's future plans for the campus climate in the e-mail gast presented the univer sity diversity leadership committee a group that oversees the diversity initiative as well as coordinates the studies and recommendations of three task forces as well as students faculty and staff our next step will be to begin a process of campus-wide discussions regarding these rec ommendations gast wrote with the ultimate goal of establishing a clear list of priorities and an implementation plan and time line gast will provide an update for the campus community nov 8 from 12 to 1 p.m in pack ard 101 the meeting is open to all faculty staff and students anna orchard 08 member of the move ment said the student group recently met with gast to discuss the climate survey and what steps are being made on campus orchard said the biggest objective is to have the student body realize that many students on campus do not feel comfortable because of socioeconomic status gender sexu ality or race orchard said the administration needs to football team tumbles b&w photo by andrew maier the mountain hawks suffered their largest defeat in goodman stadium's 20 year history at the hands of the holy cross college crusaders saturday losing 59-10 the crusaders tallied 554 total yards in the victory compared to lehigh's 314 the loss dropped the hawks to 0-2 in patriot league play in an academic world property theft abounds by chris knight shuai yuan had just made one of the biggest moves of his life after liv ing in china his whole life and studying manufacturing at beijing university yuan moved to lehigh in august to get his master's in mechanical engineering when he arrived he stayed at a gradu ate student's house while he looked for a place to live on his second night in the u.s he went to mountaintop campus to eat dinner when he returned his two fully packed suitcases were gone everything he had brought - almost everything he owned - had been stolen police told yuan a burglar had bro ken in through a window taken his two suitcases and left i remember them say it's gone they'll never come back yuan said and they say finding your stuff is very tough once the police left there was noth ing else yuan could do his clothes photos of his family contact lenses even a change of underwear had all been sto len with little chance of recovery small gifts were stolen jewelry a bracelet from china traditional chinese things - you know that you can't buy here yuan said those had some feel ing some memory and they can't be replaced yuan did not even tell his parents or friends back home what had happened or ask for any help because he did not want them to worry i never told my family yuan said ash tray locations seen as contrary to rule by elaine hardenstine the proximity of cigarette dispensers to residential housing might work against lehigh's smoking policy ash stashes containers for used cigarette butts sit directly outside all residential and many academic buildings they are within five feet of the doors put into place to help keep the campus clean ash stash offers an environmentally-friendly way to discard a cigarette however lehigh policy prohibits students from smoking next to the ash stashes according to section one of residential services general provisions for student occupancy located on the lehigh housing web site smoking is permitted on residential grounds provided it occurs 15 feet from any building entrance and away from windows of residen tial services to follow standards smokers would have to take a puff fifteen feet away and then walk back to the ash stash to dispose of the cigarette ashes and butt a sticker reiterating the rule is on every ash stash it reads you must be at least 15 feet from the building when smoking ozzie breiner director of residential services said the ash stash containers do not contradict policy it doesn't mean smoke next to the ash stash breiner said fazle rabbi 11 said the university should put the ash stashes 15 feet away from buildings first they will stop some of the littering second the containers give students a designated zone to smoke in breiner said it is not always possible to put an ash stash 15 feet away it needs to fit in a concrete level spot and cannot extend into parking lots or grassy areas according to several student smokers the place ment of the ash stash incidentally causes them to choose between affecting non-smokers and a clean environment some students just stand next to the ash stash as they smoke they do not seem to mind that they're breaking the rule as long as they are outside and discarding of the cigarette properly others simply sit further away but they toss the butt on the ground when they are done littering the campus lan grimes 10 said he is not going to change his smoking habits unless he gets a complaint grimes often smokes near doors and never has had an issue grimes does not always use an ash stash he claims see theft page 5 see climate page 7 see ash page 4 greek house chefs hepp^a football team loses grad school forum say bon appetit third-straight game informs undergrads page 9 page 20 thebrownandwhite.com
