the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 9 tuesday october 2 2007 all the lehigh news first death raises issues with alcohol use by nicole nigro last spring rider university freshman gary devercelly died of alcohol poisoning after attending a fraternity party two university administrators and three students were charged in con nection with the death the charges against the university administrators were recently dropped devercelly's death forced rider university and other universities including lehigh to take a hard look at their own alcohol policies and pre vention efforts from a fraternity president's perspective this sort of event is a nightmare situation and honestly you never know when something like this can or will happen said bob buck heit 09 president of lehigh's sigma chi fraternity i'm sure the students at rider never thought they could be that school he said but for one reason or another it did happen and they will have to live with that fact john smeaton vice provost of student affairs said he is thankful lehigh has never had an alcohol or hazing related death there was one death involving a fraternity prank at lehigh but it did not involve alcohol or hazing sophomore mitch fiskin died during a delta phi fraternity prank on sept 13 1973 but the district attorney exonerated the brothers of criminal liability according to the tion the committee plans to have a new dean in place by july 2008 former dean sally white left the university at the end of last semester to take a position of vice president for academic affairs at the college of notre dame of maryland gary lutz a professor in the education college is serving as interim dean lutz took on the position on may 1 and will remain dean for the remainder of the academic year lutz who has been at lehigh for 46 years re ceived all of his degrees from the university and has been a member of the faculty for 36 years lehigh has been good to me lutz said i haven't felt any need to move on anne meltzer dean of the college of arts and sciences and head of the search committee for a permanent education college dean said it is quite typical to appoint an interim dean while a formal search takes place meltzer said lutz could be nominated for the current position lutz said he will probably not submit an applica tion for the position i can help the college through the transition lutz said but honestly the biggest contribution i can give is in the classroom provost mohamed el-aasser the ex-officio member of the search committee said the commit tee will provide a platform for evaluating potential deans the committee which is in its beginning stages will hire a search firm to assist in the selec tion process i have charged the committee to seek candidates for the position invite nominations and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate in light exhibition features rare book about birds by allison rolish linderman library premiered its first special col lections exhibition home to roost ornithological collections at lehigh university on wednesday lois fisher black curator of special collections spoke about john james audubon's life how audu bon acquired and posed his birds and the publica tion process birds of america audubon's book is a four volume set of 435 plates which showcases over 1,000 birds in america the book which is said to weigh between 65 to 70 pounds is one of 120 surviving copies of the original 200 it came to lehigh through asa packer lehigh's founder in the late 19th century black said the book is considered the world's greatest bird book of all time audubon a self-taught naturalist and artist came to america from france in the early 19th cen tury with the goal of bringing to life every bird in america audubon's unique style and poses for the birds are a focal point in his depiction of the birds the birds were all drawn and hand-colored to scale in the 39.5 by 29.5 inch volumes in a life-like manner they were obtained from collecting the birds and using wires to position them in a natural arrange ment this new technique in the 19th century tra ditionally placed birds in a posed position of the bird's profile this new style earned audubon a cool reception from the scientific community of the time black said also in the library's collection is the five-volume collection of ornithological biographies of the birds featured in birds of america due to british copyright laws of the time audu bon found it easier to separate the print from the pictures and decided to publish both separately black said the five volumes show the power of observation and life on the american frontier barbara malt professor of psychology spoke about the birds of the lehigh valley their habitats eating habits and concentration in our particular area at the reception with over 10,000 species of birds there are 325 in the lehigh valley alone with 258 sited regularly malt said malt described the cedar waxwing which can be seen near the fairchild-martindale library where it feeds on any fruiting trees or shrubs other residents to the area are the red-winged hawk and turkey
