the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 8 friday september 28 2007 all the lehigh news first league games kick-off saturday b&wphoto by greg bander the men's soccer team tied fordham university 2-2 wednesday night at the ulrich sports complex the team heads to lafayette college tomorrow night for the kick-off of the patriot league season bagel business booms jazzman's site vacant by adrienne gerard formerly occupied by pastaficio and jazzman's cafe the two restaurant spaces in campus square closed their doors last april johnny's bagels and deli replaced pastaficio and what will replace jazzman's cafe is still undecided john zohir born in egypt moved to bethlehem from new york city nine years ago to open johnny's bagels in north bethlehem in april 2007 zohir opened a new bagel shop in campus square zohir said he wanted a restaurant closer to lehigh students are one of his main priorities we have been very successful here because it is more convenient for the college students zohir said espe cially for the freshmen who don't have transportation to the other restaurant zohir said the restaurant is busiest between 9 a.m and 10 a.m and be tween 1:30 p.m and 2 p.m after these two rushes business slows down until dinner mark ironside executive director of business services believes johnny's bagels is a perfect fit for lehigh iron side is in charge of recruiting tenants making contracts and leasing out the restaurant spac es m campus square he said he thinks johnny's has been successful for a number of reasons the owners are very enthusiastic no vice provost in place after devlin's exit by lisa luzzi â– start date not set for new vice provost search and reevaluation of institutional research office a replacement vice provost of institutional research has not been named since former lehigh administrator steve devlin's resignation in july devlin was arrested july 10 after an alleged at tempt to have sexual relations with two underage girls and their mother no specific person is filling in for devlin at the office of institutional research provost mohamed el-aasser said but office director scott knauss has come forward as a leader el-aasser said knauss and his team are doing a great job work ing together to meet the goals and demands of the university el-aasser said the situation should not cause concern because the office is well-staffed and is able to fulfill its responsibilities and conduct the daily work necessary to stay on schedule the office follows specific calendars to ensure all tasks are completed on time el-aasser said the office is on schedule and has not fallen behind due to the absence of a vice provost the open vice provost position is an opportu nity for change el-aasser said the university plans to assess the office's struc ture and dynamic as well as its current and future needs el-aasser said following the office's evaluation an appropri ate job description and set of qualifications for a new vice provost will be created from there the university will start recruiting for the position the search for qualified candidates will be a systematic process - a committee will be orga nized and interviews will be conducted to ensure mcknight fills new multicultural affairs post by elizabeth murray singing we shall overcome to a crowded packard church john mcknight displayed his dedication to diver sity and acceptance at lehigh during the nov 15 2005 stop the hate vigil in packard auditorium tom dubreuil associate dean of residential life said mcknight's performance showed how much he cared about the issues i think that students faculty and staff were incredibly moved dubreuil said through actions such as these and a strong history at lehigh mcknight earned the title of first assistant director of multicultural affairs the new position is also the first ex pansion of the multicultural affairs office since its creation alta thornton interim dean of multicultural affairs said the multicultural affairs office is very excited for mcknight to take on this position he is a good fit because he's really connected to the students who use the office thornton said mcknight's promotion is part of a larger plan to expand the role of the multicultural affairs office it was a longtime goal that we would expand beyond a one-person office mcknight said with lehigh's climate research survey last year the timing seemed perfect to ex pand the personnel and activity of the multicultural affairs office prior to this mcknight served three years as a residence life coordinator last semester while serving as an rlc mcknight also co-taught a class with thornton titled black issues in higher education our goal in teaching the course was to paint a different picture of education in american society than the one stu dents at lehigh typically get mcknight said the course is based on historical differences not an inherit difference between black and white students mcknight said the students got into heated discussions throughout the semester about affirmative action and quota systems which directly affect every student at lehigh it was fun as an instructor to pull out the tensions and have students talk it out mcknight said charlie jensen 08 one of mcknight's students and a gryphon under mcknight during his time as an rlc said he liked the open forums in mcknight's classes he always allowed students to speak openly about the issues and heard opinions from everyone in the class jensen said he didn't take sides and let everyone have an ample opportunity to speak about the specific topic mcknight also worked to educate and develop students outside of the classroom in his time as an rlc in taylor college and warren square see johnny's page 3 see provost page 3 see mcknight page 2 sororities differ e^^a ' 00'bcill team aces gryphons take on from fraternities harvard tomorrow day duty page 7 page 16 bw.lehigh.edu
