the brown and white vol 115 no 1 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday september 4 2007 all the lehigh news first employee resigns for sex scandal by julie stewart the former vice provost of institutional research was arrested july 10 after an alleged attempt to have sexual relations with two underage girls and their mother who he met on aol instant messenger steven devlin of bryn mawr pa arrived at the parking lot of a kohl's department store in spring field pa at about 8:05 p.m according to the af fidavit for arrest he planned to meet the mother and girls - instead he met delaware county de tective lisa carroll and a crew of law enforcement officers the affidavit said devlin used his lehigh office computer to contact the woman who agreed to al low him to have sexual contact with her and her daughters ages 7 and 9 the 32-year-old mother of two however was actually carroll posing as a mother as part of an undercover investigation for an internet crimes against children task force devlin was arraigned july 11 and posted 250,000 bail steve esack of the morning call said esack said devlin is now on house arrest and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing september 21 in delaware county the charges against devlin include two counts of solicitation to commit statutory sexual assault two counts of solicitation to commit involuntary deviate sexual intercourse two counts of solicita tion to commit aggravated indecent assault two counts of solicitation to commit rape two counts of attempted statutory sexual assault two counts of attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse two counts of attempted aggravated indecent as senior shot off campus bullet grazed victim's head by andrew daniels a lehigh student was grazed by a bullet at his home on birkel avenue after telling a group of men to quiet down because police were close in the area on july 29 the student a 22-year-old senior has chosen to remain anonymous for his protection the student was sitting on his porch at approximately 12:20 a.m when he heard three men down the street mak ing noise i came outside to relax on the porch and i started texting someone with my phone he said i looked up and heard three guys being loud and i told them that they had better be quiet for their own benefit because i knew that there were cops nearby honestly i was just trying to be a nice citizen after he told the men to be quiet one of the men jumped onto the stu dent's porch he put a gun to the back of the student's head shot it and ran away the others followed the student said the bullet grazed the back of his head but he did not feel anything i didn't really have time to freak out the student said i don't know if i was shocked or scared all i knew was that i had just been shot at and i was excited that i survived the student said he currently has two skin scabs a bone bruise and two b&wphoto by kara chalanick scars from the shooting according to an article published july 31 in the morning call the police could offer only a vague description of the shooter as a man who wore a white t-shirt a red bandana and red baseball cap lehigh chief of police edward shupp refused to comment on the shooting as it falls under the jurisdiction of the bethlehem police department bethlehem police were unavailable to take questions regarding the incident the student said the investigator told him they caught one of the men but not the protagonist he also said they recovered two handguns nearby a student was assaulted on the 400 block of birkel avenue above on july 29 a weapon was discharged and a bullet grazed the student's head he was taken to the hospital and released after being treated for minor injuries lehigh ranked highest ever in controversial college report by caitlin kingsley u.s news rank year rank 1998 34 1999 36 2000 34 2001 38 2002 36 2003 40 2004 37 2005 37 2006 32 2007 33 2008 31 lehigh has been acknowledged once again by u.s news & world report as one of the nation's outstanding research uni versities moving up two places to number 31 in the report's list of america's best colleges this is lehigh's highest ranking to date the 2008 rankings were released august 17 lehigh also received high marks in other categories the university was ranked 13 for alumni giving 19 for faculty re sources 26 for student selectivity 27 for best value and 31 for graduation and retention rate u.s news also ranked lehigh's p.c rossin college of en gineering and applied science 37 in the category of best under graduate engineering programs whose highest degree is a ph.d many disagree with this process particularly the survey that asks college presidents to rate other colleges which counts toward 25 percent of a school's score according to the u.s news & world report web site the survey lets presidents provosts and deans of admissions account for intangibles like faculty dedication to teaching these top academics rate peer schools academics on a scale from 1 to 5 of the 4,269 people this year who got the survey 51 per cent completed it daniel weiss president of lafayette college is part of an anti-rankings campaign when they ask for a perspective that isn't grounded in hard facts it becomes more of a popularity contest weiss said in the morning call it's not based in reality lafayette fell four spots to number 34 among the nation's best liberal arts colleges muhlenberg college cedar crest college and moravian college boycotted the peer assessment survey as well lehigh participated in the survey this year in higher education
