easily out distanced by the fast pittsburgh team enthusiastic student body at tends big booster meeting parade after smoker score 14-7 affair held after football game was enjoyed by many pro ceeds go to student aid score 15-40 buddy lingle features game with spectacular 80-run for touchdown miller of tech wins race bray scores first for brown and white team the interfraternity council held its initial tea dance of the season last saturday afternoon in drown hall the dancing started imme diately after the w and j game and continued until 7 o'clock the music for the occasion was furnish ed by the lehigh six and the whole affair proved to be a huge success mrs john w lang was the hostess the council plans to arrange teas after each of the remaining football games and occasionally afterward if the student body responds prop erly by attending them all of the profits derived from them go to the student aid fund for the pur pose of helping deserving athletes through college this fact alone should serve as an incentive to bring out a large crowd each sat urday afternoon as most of the house-parties are set for the next week-end plans are being made by the committee in charge to accommodate an extra large crowd an attempt is being made to have sherbo's orchestra furnish the dance music but in die event that this is impossible some other well-known group of musi cians will be secured the subscrip tion will be 1.00 per couple the same as last week there were about sixty couples present saturday and the men in charge are preparing for at least twice that number next week re freshments in the form of cake and punch will be served and every man in college is urged to attend the inter-fraternity council wishes to make clear the fact that every stu dent is invited to attend whether a fraternity member or not the com mittee is working hard and hopes to see a record turn-out next satur day afternoon after the football game the civil engineering society held its first meeting of the year last thursday evening in the physics lecture room the meeting was very well attended nearly 150 stu dents being present the meeting was opened with a talk by j n marshall president of the society in which he outlined the plans for the coming year he also explained that the a s c e in tends to open student chapters in such recognized technical universi ties as lehigh massachusetts insti tute of technology cornell etc this student membership will en title members to all publications of the regular society also a member ship card will be issued that will en title members to attend all meetings of the regular society it was then moved seconded and carried that the civil engineering society at le high apply for admission as a stu dent chapter president marshall then intro duced mr a c northrup who gave an illustrated lecture on the construction of the hydro-electric plant at caribou california in the sierra nevada mountains mr northrup travelled in the klondike during the gold rush and he has also travelled extensively in south america the caribou plant is one of nine hydro-electric plants in the moun tains along the pacific coast it is situated in the sierra nevada range on the feather river about 200 miles northeast of san francisco the caribou plant was built by stone & webster of boston for the great western gas & electric co at present its output is 30,000 h p it is so constructed that when desired it can be increased to 60,000 h p with very little addi continued on page three deutscher verein hold first meet soccer eleven ties in practice game lehigh went down to defeat a gainst the powerful w and j ma chine in a hard fought game on taylor field saturday afternoon by the score of 14 to 7 the game was even closer than the score indicates the visitors powerful and heavy line was held even and at times out played by the brown and white linemen while their fast backs were unable to gain consistently ex cept during a short time at the start of the second half lehigh fumbles paved the way for the first w and j touchdown the feature of the game was a beautiful run of 80 yards for a touchdown by buddy lingle near the close of the game mc laughlin threw a pass which lingle intercepted while running at top speed and aided by good interfe rence he outdistanced the w and j team to the goal-line it was the most spectacular run seen here in several years the lehigh line played a great game although without the services of springsteen who could not start and cusick and captain mccarthy during the last half mccarthy forced to leave the game on account of injuries for the second time in four years received a great cheer as he left the field both teams fumbled frequently at critical times while lehigh's plays were greatly slowed up by the players missing the signals otherwise the brown and white players showed good football the tackling in particular being effective lehigh won the toss and chose to defend the west goal with the wind at their backs brenkert kicked off to lehigh's 33-yard line on the second play harper got loose for a 14-yard run but the ball was brought back and lehigh penalized continued on page four freshman dance the carnegie tech cross-country runners completely defeated the brown and white team saturday when they sent six men across the line before the first lehigh man came in making the score 15 to 40 the carnegie tech hill-and dalers arrived here friday morn ing anxious to see the st luke's course and with brightest hopes for the race on saturday friday after noon they jogged over the course with coach kanaly obtaining a good work-out for saturday's run starting on the upper field at 3 o'clock the two teams set out for their goal bray took the lead over the campus and kept it for over a mile when he was passed by miller captain of the carnegie tech team miller dykeman kelley green law and tubbs ran unusually well for the visitors all making better time than mcfall winner of the lafayette meet made recently much credit is due to bray who with practically no training took first honors for the lehigh team erb and leister coming in a few seconds behind him the men in the large turn out of the student body packed the game room in the gymnasium and the cheering and singing were en thusiastic throughout the whole ev ening one of the features of the pro gram was a triple contest between the sophomores and freshmen the first of the engagements was a boxing bout between representatives of each of the two classes the freshman won the match after a hard-fought three-round battle a wrestling bout between tremaine 24 and fordham 25 both in the 158-pound class resulted in a vic tory for the sophomores when tre maine threw his opponent with a body hold with the score a tie at one event apiece the decision was jeft to a butting contest between five mem bers of each class five volunteers from each class were obtained and each was given a football fieadgear starting at oppusite blues of the wrestling mat the contestants crawling on hands and knees en deavored to shove each other off the mat with their heads at the close of three two-minute rounds one man from each class had been shov ed off the mat but the decision was given to the freshmen for having kept the sophs the nearer to their own side of the field of battle the first speaker of the evening was austin tate captain of the le high eleven in 1918 and one of the sturdiest linesmen ever developed at the brown and white institution tate spoke on the correct mental attitude which a student body should instill into their football team and themselves he said that the spirit with which a team goes into a game is dependent entirly on the student body he urged everybody to get correct mental attitude of fight and determination and to show it at the games head cheer-leader shipley then introduced to the students the new lehigh cheer which was received with favorable comment on all sides it is a locomotive effect produced by spelling the letters of lehigh be ginning slowly and increasing and ending with a long whistled siren the last speaker of the evening was h r hop walters he talked on the beat w and j parade was then formed an impressive address was made by doctor emery on friday morn ing upon the occasion of the unveil ing of a tablet in the chapel to the memory of the late professor rob ert w blake dr emery spoke in part as fol lows you will notice that there has been installed on the chapel walls near the junction of the tran sept and nave a beautiful bronze tablet in memory of one of lehigh's great teachers who devoted more than a score of years to the service of this university the description reads as fol lows tn memory of robert w blake born may 31 1864 died january 27 1921 professor of the latin language and literature and head of the college of arts and science in lehigh university from 1899 to 1921 he loved great things he won the devotion of men and was a power in their lives he taught to many the greatness of learning and of man's mind professor blake came to lehigh in the fall of 1899 he was an al umnus of princeton university class of 1887 graduating with the degree of bachelor of arts he continued his studies at princeton and received the degree of master of arts in 1888 he then entered the princeton theological semi nary leaving in 1890 to become in structor in greek in princeton uni versity this position he held for four years leaving in 1894 for study abroad at leipzig and erlangen he became professor of latin in washington and jefferson college in 1896 was called to lehigh in 1899 and was in active service up to the time of his death any attempt to evaluate in words the service of a scholarly and successful teacher is futile it is impossible to measure the far reaching results effected by one who day by day year by year devoted ly dedicates his time and thought and utmost energy to promoting the welfare of others professor blake exerted a powerful and far-reaching influence at lehigh university along cultured lines he represented in an institution largely devoted to en gineering education the value of the studies of the traditional college course he was untiring in his efforts to promote what is best and strongest in sound education his outstanding character and keen sense of honor his high scho larship and professional skill his personal charm and daily conduct were a constant source of inspira tion to his colleagues and to the students over whose work he exer cised such wise oversight the installation of this memorial tablet in the university chapel is very fitting it is a constant re minder of a great teacher and of a great man notice junior class meeting the lehigh soccer team played to a 1 to 1 draw with billy sher idan's bethlehem eleven hi a prac tice game on the upper field satur day afternoon the brown and white squad was without the serv ices of lamb and fernandez who were in no condition to play as well as desh who may be out of the game for the rest of the season lehigh devoted themselves mainly to defensive play being unable to penetrate the local team's backfield bethlehem scored first when dur ing the first half lehr took a shot at goal from short range which brewer had no chance save le high worked hard but their efforts availed them nothing until the mid dle of the second half when a rush brought the ball close to the visitors goal and paulson was detected handling within the penalty area bonnemaison turned the opportu nity into a tally with a pretty the senior class book committee was held last wed nesday evening and several matters of importance were discussed the entire senior class will be canvassed to determine definitely how many of its members desire to be represented in the book cards will be distributed for this purpose these are to be filled out and return ed as soon as possible it is expected that the senior class book will have been completed by the first of january when it will be turned over to the 23 epitome com mittee no definite plans concerning the book itself could be made the com mittee is awaiting the arrival of contracts for the engraving and printing as soon as these are re ceived the assessment will be pub lished and the committee will col lect the money at once the deutscher verein held the first meeting members to be selected from the class of 23 of further import was the naming of a committee which consisted of professor more as advisory member mr kleine and mr reichard for the arrang ing of a programme for this season another committee was appointed to look after the initiation of new members it may be of interest to the new students especially those taking german to know that the deutsch er verein is an honorary society whose members are chosen from those students having high averages for the first two years in the ger man course ten seniors and ten juniors besides honorary members compose the society the following were present at the meeting president h j kleine e p gangewere h l weber h carroll p c reichard a korbel a l saltzman and prof r p moore at a meeting held last friday night the freshman dance com mittee elected c g taylor chair man and completed plans for the freshman dance friday night the committee consisting of taylor f childs f s astarita a h camp bell and c e wheeler decided to accept the invitation of delta tau delta to hold the affair in their house mrs f v larkin has consented to act as hostess and the committee hopes that the class will make its first party a success the dancing will begin at 8.30 and last until 2 in the morning the committee is fortunate in se curing the jazzland five well known entertainers from allen town for the music the subscrip tion will be 3.00 and refreshments will be served at mid-night the matter of dress has been left by the committee entirely to the individual and 25 men may feel entirely at ease without formal evening clothes immediately after the college meeting on friday october 21 the junior class held a short meeting in coppee hall the main issue of the meeting was the payment of dues and of the night the freshman dance com mittee elected c g taylor chair man and completed plans for the freshman dance friday night the committee consisting of taylor f childs f s astarita a h camp bell and c e wheeler decided to accept the invitation of delta tau delta to hold the affair in their house mrs f v larkin has consented to act as hostess and the committee hopes that the class will make its first party a success the dancing will begin at 8.30 and last until 2 in the morning the committee is fortunate in se curing the jazzland five well known entertainers from allen town for the music the subscrip tion will be 3.00 and refreshments will be served at mid-night the matter of dress has been left by the committee entirely to the individual and 25 men may feel entirely at ease without formal evening clothes immediately after the college meeting on friday october 21 the junior class held a short meeting in coppee hall the main issue of the meeting was the payment of dues and of the assessment for last year's freshman banquet to cover the bills for breakage and taxes president lees will appoint one man in each living group to collect the dues brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday
