the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 21 tuesday november 21 2006 all the lehigh news first hawks end record season b&w photo by john conner sophomore midfielder adam gazda above and the men's soccer team lost 3-0 to duke in the third round of the ncaa tournament sunday the hawks finished the season with a 15-2-3 record the best record in team history anti-sweatshop show highlights injustices by sung yoo news writer students modeled sweat shop-free clothing to speak out about worker's rights at lam berton hall on friday the fashion show was the culminating event of the pro gressive student alliance's sweatshop week of action throughout the week the psa asked students to sign petitions urging lehigh to af filiate with the worker rights consortium said tamara nisic 08 psa president the wrc is a non-profit organization that investigates factories making collegiate ap parel and reports back when violations have occurred nisic said nisic said there are more than 160 universities and col leges affiliated with the wrc including harvard university massachusetts institute of technology and the univer sity of pennsylvania psa members modeled lehigh apparel on the runway while announcers peter bond 07 and elizabeth roth 08 critiqued the apparel by tell ing the audience the ways in which the apparel may have been made two students speak about bias remarks by olivier lewis â– allegations of sexual racial discrimination arise about athletics department senior news writer two students said they re ceived discriminatory remarks from coaches in the athletic department during a forum on racism held nov 7 by the movement ryan ritter 10 said his cross country coach treated him differently because of his sexuality ritter said his coach told him recruits would not feel comfort able staying with him because he is openly gay my coach was trying to brainwash me that homophobia was ok ritter said head cross country coach deborah utesch said she has since apologized a week or so ago i had sev eral conversations with a mem ber of our team about a matter that we have agreed should be maintained as confidential within our program utesch said by e-mail those con versations were not effectively handled by me and as a result miscommunications and misun derstandings occurred that were unintended but hurtful i have apologized to the team member involved and to our team she said ritter said he did not desire to comment any further about what he said at the forum say ing justice had been served and talking more would just make him upset joseph sterrett dean of the athletics department said he could not comment because of agreements made between the department the coach and ritter todd etters assistant coach for track and field liam smith graduate assistant and other cross country athletes would not comment on the incident ritter's story of athletics department misconduct was not the only one shared at the forum whitney pryor 08 said rit ter's story inspired her to share her experience pryor told more than 70 peo ple at the forum that peter lem bo former head football coach made sexist and racist remarks to her last spring when lembo asked her and her friends to show prospective football play ers a good time pryor said the football team was doing really well and lembo was popular at the time pryor said she did not feel comfortable talking about this before he had left - she did not gre changes to take effect next september by desiree annunziato news writer significant changes in both test format and content for the graduate record examination will go into effect in september 2007 said donna kosteva the pre-profes sional adviser in career services students can take the current exam this spring and summer kosteva said she says these changes will give graduate schools a better gauge for whom to select because it will be a bet ter way of predicting success in graduate school these changes will also be implemented for security reasons and to maximize computer-based technology the new exam will test higher cognitive and reason ing skills it will be less focused on vocabulary and in stead more focused on complex reasoning and applica tions kosteva said the new exam will still consist of the same three sec tions analytical writing assessment quantitative and ver bal but the difference will be in the number of sections and the timing of the sections there is also going to be an extra experimental sec tion on the new exam the current exam has experi mental questions in it that kosteva said are easy for students to spot kosteva said the new exam is not more difficult even though these changes will be made the new exam will be longer will most likely be more expensive and will be a computer-based test in stead of a computer-adaptive test the princeton review says the current exam a com puter-adaptive test adjusts the difficulty of each question accordingly in contrast the new exam a computer based test will give everyone the same questions in the same order allowing for more standardization kosteva said in the class of 2005 36 percent of le high students went to graduate school kosteva said because a significant number of students go to graduate school students should take notice of these changes to the gre exam and take action accord ingly as soon as possible kosteva advises students to sign up for the exam as soon as possible possibly two to three months in advance to take advantage of the cur rent exam before the changes come into effect signing up for the current exam will be on a first come first-serve basis and she said she predicts many see bias page 2 see fashion page 4 see gre page 4 cocaine use l j g *^\ lafayette check the on the rise bfl defeats lehigh web site for online page 5 page 12 bw.lehigh.edu
