the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 18 friday november 10 2006 all the lehigh news first lehigh transportation is it ready to go green by lindsay moyer managing editor online in the fall semester of 2002 dave dunham 03 moved to philadelphia with his girlfriend he continued to take classes at lehigh dunham commuted driving his 85 volkswagen golf 120 miles daily and using be tween 30 and 50 gallons of fuel per week but he did not use a gallon of gas three of his most important stops during the week were made at south side restaurants tulum bridge works andj.p macgrady's dunham poured filtered waste vegetable oil from each restaurant straight into the fuel tank of his volkswagen he had converted the golf to run on wvo it was great that i could get oil for free and just filter it he said then there's the environ mental benefits and it reduces dependence on foreign oil the environmental and cost saving advantages of grease cars seemed like a no-brainer to dunham he went on to convert his dad's entire fleet of com mercial trucking vehicles before starting the pennsburg-based smarter fuel company in 2004 at his shop dunham filters wvo from myriad sources and converts personal and commer cial vehicles to run on the fuel b&w photo by lindsa y keller he serves customers in pennsyl vania new jersey delaware and maryland but there's still one local cus tomer dunham wants to attract lehigh university campuses go greener dunham and others want to see lehigh make a big change in its on-campus transportation in recent years students faculty and community members inter ested in making lehigh's trans portation more environmentally sound have proposed biodiesel waste vegetable oil and bicy cling among other initiatives administrators may be start ing to take notice a golf cart fuels up at lehigh's gas station on goodman campus the university goes through 40,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 80,000 gallons of gasoline a year alcohol use sends 28 to er this fall â– administration con cerned with increased number of students taken to st luke's by katy jacobson assistant news editor twenty-eight students have been sent to st luke's hos pital for alcohol intoxication and other serious alcohol-re lated issues during the first two months of this semester said john smeaton vice provost for student affairs this number is compared to 16 students in the spring semes ter of 2006 and 20 students in the fall semester of 2005 police said police chief edward shupp said there were no changes to the police force this semester that could have affected the number of students cited shupp said police officers use their own discretion based on the level of intoxication in deciding whether or not to bring a student to the hospital for example shupp said if a student is vomiting or unable to keep their balance these in stances would probably warrant them being sent to st luke's it depends on the condition of the individual shupp said in an e-mail smeaton sent to students faculty and staff on wednesday he said he is deeply concerned with the sig nificant increase in numbers of these incidents in an interview with smea ton he said he wants students to enjoy their lehigh experience but emphasized students need to think about their decisions related to alcohol and how they will affect themselves and others smeaton said he wants stu students sent to st luke's hospital for alcohol-related issues fall 2005 spring 2006 fall 2006 global studies major mixes language and ir by kaitlin kelly news writer a new global studies major was created recently to combine studies in international relations courses and learning a foreign language the new major allows students who want to take classes in both fields without having to do a double major the global studies major was created by henri bar key professor of international relations barkey said the major was created so students can learn about another area of the world we need to be competent in other cultures he said barkey said the global studies major requires stu dents to study abroad for at least a semester in order to help students become competent in a foreign culture and language we want you to learn your language he said then practice and improve it when you go abroad that way you learn about what the country has to offer you for the major students are required to study in a non-english speaking country not dominated by eng lish-speaking people barkey said students are also encouraged to go where there aren't too many americans students are encouraged to go as far away as possible while abroad students must take courses about the history and culture of the country not gen see alcohol page 4 see biofuel page 2 see global page 4 int'l students w football team speaker discusses m b find a home jl w to play microfinance ____. - at lehigh jp fordham in honduras page 7 i _____ i page 16 bw.lehigh.edu
