the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 17 tuesday november 7 2006 all the lehigh news first syrian ambassador advocates change by martina russial news writer syria and other middle eastern countries would like to make the world more peace ful but change has to be made according to dr imad mousta pha syrian ambassador to the u.s moustapha spoke to students and faculty at sinclair audi torium on saturday night to kick off lehigh's international week moustapha discussed ter rorism from his perspective as a syrian politician and spoke about what it's like being an academic in washington d.c i observe the political scene very carefully moustapha said and was surprised to see the reality of the american position moustapha expressed what it means to be an ambassador moustapha said the u.s and syria have historically had an agreeable political coexistence when the major powers of europe were beginning to colo nize countries in the middle east and africa syria was more concerned with being colonized by the french and british than by the u.s moustapha said the united states was still a benign power with no colonial position it posed little threat to syria moustapha said the united states was initially neutral they were trying not to interfere but to understand moustapha said after presi dent eisenhower issued his 1957 doctrine the u.s gained a stronger position in middle wireless coverage expanded by andrew glancy news writer south bethlehem leaders re cently announced the availabil ity of wireless internet coverage to most off-campus students the south side bethlehem keystone innovation zone has contracted ppl telcom for the new wireless network that cov ers more than 2.5 square miles of the south side the new wireless network will provide an alternative for lehigh students who are out of range of the university's wireless network the sign-up process is rela tively simple and the bill can be forwarded directly to a students bursar account students will now have the opportunity to take advantage of the internet at south bethle hem locations the ben franklin technol ogy partners provided more than half of the funding for the 192,000 project the wireless network grew from a pilot program that began at lehigh university in the fall of 2005 roy gruver director of tech nology management for library and technology services said 375 lehigh students tested the service for the pilot program the wireless network is now ready to be commercialized for the broader south bethlehem community gruver said ap proximately 75 students out of the 375 that tested it have decided to purchase the service the services costs 20 a month to create the network ppl telcom strategically positioned 50 commercial access points around the city gruver said as the pilot program pro gressed students contacted lehigh's lts and ppl with connectivity and signal strength problems the feedback helped the ppl technicians optimize the network to minimize no signal zones certain areas required extra troubleshooting in order to provide ample signal strength gruver said the klz's technology initia tive made it possible to open the student-tested system up to the entire south side at the same time the infra structure will serve as another selling point for prospective students and faculty looking for a competitive learning and working environment gruver said technology is a big com petitive piece for incoming stu dents and faculty gruver said students plan for campus golf course by gabriella saade news writer last spring students designed a golf course for goodman campus as part of the integrated learning experience program dean of athlet ics joseph sterrett said at this point the project is purely theoretical and has not been fully developed the proposal calls for a nine-hole executive golf course driving range and indoor complex for chipping and putting the originators of the project include 14 students who hope to market the golf course to the varsity golf team students student orga nizations alumni faculty and members of the community surveys and interviews conducted by ile students showed 65 percent of lehigh students are golfers the golf course proposal is simply a con cept at this point sterrett said it has not been advanced to the point of actually being a project that we have chosen to pursue or a project for b&w photo by john conner construction on a putting range at goodman campus officials are still deciding if they will build a nine-hole golf course b&w photo by john conner the men's soccer team lost in a shoot-out to bucknell on friday in the patriot league tournament semifinals the hawks now wait to see if they will get an at-larae bid into the ncaa tournament and if so if they will get a bye host a game or go on the road see wireless page 5 see politics page 4 see golf page 4 hawks lose in semifinal shoot-out see story page 16 senior directs #
