of the leopard but even a bit further whenever the first team has faced an opponent le high has shown tremendous power and only when reserve strength was used have setbacks occurred tomorrow the full power of le high's attack will be hurled against the maroon and even conservative supporters are certain that this at tack coupled with the ferocity of a victory bent eleven will succeed in blasting the lafayette line for more than one score perhaps those experts who pick lehigh to win are aware of this feeling at any rate some such at titude must have caused them to predict a result contrary to direct comparative scores no one is over confident and everyone hopes that the game will be as thrilling as last year's but as far as lehigh is con cerned the 64th meeting with la fayette will leave the brown and white team but 10 games behind their oldest rival football enthusiasm dripping un hesitating confidence pervades ev ery inch of south mountain tonight as 10,000 lehigh men await the 64th gridiron meeting with lafay ette despite several bad defeats and a record of slightly unfavorable comparative scores brown and white supporters are moved by an irresistable hunch that somehow through shear fighting spirit or through the canny strategy of le high's battle campaigners their team will manage to eke out a thrilling victory over the lafayette leopard this gridiron classic naturally brings to its peak every bit of faith supporters of each team can muster but tomorrow's contest im presses campus rooters as some thing different ever since lehigh began to hope for victory last year lehigh men have retained the be lief that their turn was coming that the leopard was soon to fall before a hunter who had sought his skin for 10 long years the long succession of defeats brought the conviction that whenever lehigh got within two touchdowns of la fayette the brown and white house parties begin in easton arts building repairs begun lafayette fraternities to hold dances and prom two of the oldest rivals in the country will lock horns to morrow when the brown and white football team of lehigh and the leopards of lafayette meet at 2 p m in the lafayette stadium at easton these two teams will be meeting for the sixty - fourth time in a series which is one of the longest in the world it was back in 1 884 that the intense rivalry which has grown up between these lehigh valley colleges started and since that time at least one game has been played between them every year with the exception of 1 896 when no game was played of the 63 games already played lafayette has won the greatest number of victories thirty-five victories are chalked up in the leopard's favor to 24 for le high with four games tied a large number of lehigh alumni have already arrived for this annual spectacle some of whom are the faithful who return every year but this year their numbers are greatly aug mented by those who were dis appointed in missing last year's 13-12 victory and have come back with the hope of seeing this victory repeated tomor row still more are expected and with the same situation prevail ing at easton it is expected that over 18,000 people will be in the stands when the teams line ip for the opening kick-off fair season for teams neither team will enter the con test with exceptional records as both have won four games with le high having four defeats registered against it and lafayette three de feats and one tie game on its rec ord two common opponents have been met by the two teams muh lenberg and rutgers both of whom the leopards defeated lafayette defeated the scarlet 31-26 while rutgers came back to nose out le high 14-13 muhlenberg fell before the mccracken team but defeated lehigh 24-0 the two met under the similar conditions last year as lafayette defeated a rutgers team which the following week conquer ed lehigh only to have the situa tion scrambled when lehigh de feated lafayette this deadlock last year resulted in a triple tie between these teams for the middle three championship in its first year of existence and a lehigh victory to morrow would result in a similar situation lafayette started the year with victories over st thomas and muhlenberg beating the former 7-0 and the latter 13-0 in the third game they met the strong colgate team and were repulsed 41-0 the following week they surprised the football world by holding perm state to a scoreless tie washington and jefferson inflicted a 7-0 defeat on the eastonians the next satur day in the first indoor night foot ball game lafayette returned to the winning column the next week however when they crushed the small upsala team 74-0 the leo pards took the lead in the middle three the following saturday when they upset rutgers 31-26 temple gave lafayette its third licking of the year last saturday fjy a 46-0 score but lafayette was obviously taking no chances of losing men for the lehigh game as seven of her first team players were not even in uniform and those playing remain ed in the game only a short time veterans to play many of the men who played against lehigh last year are still wearing the maroon this year in cluded among these are captain woodfin the team's best punter and line plunger socolow the di minutive halfback who gave le high consiredable trouble last year until he was hurt cook the giant tackle whose three attempts for field goals gave the lehigh root ers many anxious moments and jack thompson who scored one of the touchdowns against the brown and white other members of the leopard team who have been play ing well this year are wilcox a speedy halfback reuter a veteran center and edraney a bethlehem continued on page six comprehensive examinations do not accomplish their purpose at lehigh was the report of the en gineering council's committee on that subject the committee of which prof e s sinkinson of the mining department is chairman stated that the purpose of the com prehensive examinations was to measure the engineering ability of the students and that in their pres ent form the examinations gave no true indication of the relative abil ities of the individual students the committee suggested that compre hensives be abolished the report of the committee met with instant opposition by other members of the faculty who insist ed that although the examinations were not very successful under the present system were confident that better examinations and better re sults might be obtained in the fu ture the meeting was adjourned without taking a vote on the com mittee's report as the question was too evenly divided to make a deci sion without further discussion friday 4 p m rally at flag pole and march to taylor field to witness final practice 7:30 p m smoker at taylor gym nasium followed from the time it was put up until after the game several years ago two lafayette freshmen decided to cut the banner from its place over the quadrangle and if possible take it back to la fayette with them they succeeded in getting up on the roof and were just about to cut the ropes when they were discovered one of them escaped but his partner was held a prisoner until the middle of the game when he was released minus the hair from one side of his head many of the freshmen guarding the banner become nervous as re ports are circulated among them to the effect that lafayette has just left easton in a body and are com ing over to take the banner or that several ladders were discovered be hind one of the sections most of these reports originate right in the hall by upperclassmen who wish to with electricity the sign at tracted considerable attention be cause it could be seen from any part of bethlehem when this sign wore out it was replaced by small signs hung from the tops of the two national journalistic hon orary to hold formal pledging dec 2 coach conducts debate tryouts would be certain of victory and followers of austy tate's team are certain that this year le high is not only within striking distance of the leopard but even a bit further whenever the first team has faced an opponent le high has shown tremendous power and only when reserve strength was used have setbacks occurred tomorrow the full power of le high's attack will be hurled against the maroon and even conservative supporters are certain that this at tack coupled with the ferocity of a victory bent eleven will succeed in blasting the lafayette line for more than one score perhaps those experts who pick lehigh to win are aware of this feeling at any rate some such at titude must have caused them to predict a result contrary to direct comparative scores no one is over confident and everyone hopes that the game will be as thrilling as last year's but as far as lehigh is con cerned the 64th meeting with la fayette will leave the brown and white team but 10 games behind their oldest rival football enthusiasm dripping un hesitating confidence pervades ev ery inch of south mountain tonight as 10,000 lehigh men await the 64th gridiron meeting with lafay ette despite several bad defeats and a record of slightly unfavorable comparative scores brown and white supporters are moved by an irresistable hunch that somehow through shear fighting spirit or through the canny strategy of le high's battle campaigners their team will manage to eke out a thrilling victory over the lafayette leopard this gridiron classic naturally brings to its peak every bit of faith supporters of each team can muster but tomorrow's contest im presses campus rooters as some thing different ever since lehigh began to hope for victory last year lehigh men have retained the be lief that their turn was coming that the leopard was soon to fall before a hunter who had sought his skin for 10 long years the long succession of defeats brought the conviction that whenever lehigh got within two touchdowns of la fayette the brown and white house parties begin in easton arts building repairs begun m in the lafayette stadium at easton these two teams will be meeting for the sixty - fourth time in a series which is one of the longest in the world it was back in 1 884 that the intense rivalry which has grown up between these lehigh valley colleges started and since that time at least one game has been played between them every year with the exception of 1 896 when no game was played of the 63 games already played lafayette has won the greatest number of victories thirty-five victories are chalked up in the leopard's favor to 24 for le high with four games tied a large number of lehigh alumni have already arrived for this annual spectacle some of whom are the faithful who return every year but this year their numbers are greatly aug mented by those who were dis appointed in missing last year's 13-12 victory and have come back with the hope of seeing this victory repeated tomor row still more are expected and with the same situation prevail ing at easton it is expected that over 18,000 people will be in the stands when the teams line ip for the opening kick-off fair season for teams neither team will enter the con test with exceptional records as both have won four games with le high having four defeats registered against it and lafayette three de feats and one tie game on its rec ord two common opponents have been met by the two teams muh lenberg and rutgers both of whom the leopards defeated lafayette defeated the scarlet 31-26 while rutgers came back to nose out le high 14-13 muhlenberg fell before the mccracken team but defeated lehigh 24-0 the two met under the similar conditions last year as lafayette defeated a rutgers team which the following week conquer ed lehigh only to have the situa tion scrambled when lehigh de feated lafayette this deadlock last year resulted in a triple tie between these teams for the middle three championship in its first year of existence and a lehigh victory to morrow would result in a similar situation lafayette started the year with victories over st thomas and muhlenberg beating the former 7-0 and the latter 13-0 in the third game they met the strong colgate team and were repulsed 41-0 the following week they surprised the football world by holding perm state to a scoreless tie washington and jefferson inflicted a 7-0 defeat on the eastonians the next satur day in the first indoor night foot ball game lafayette returned to the winning column the next week however when they crushed the small upsala team 74-0 the leo pards took the lead in the middle three the following saturday when they upset rutgers 31-26 temple gave lafayette its third licking of the year last saturday fjy a 46-0 score but lafayette was obviously taking no chances of losing men for the lehigh game as seven of her first team players were not even in uniform and those playing remain ed in the game only a short time veterans to play many of the men who played against lehigh last year are still wearing the maroon this year in cluded among these are captain woodfin the team's best punter and line plunger socolow the di minutive halfback who gave le high consiredable trouble last year until he was hurt cook the giant tackle whose three attempts for field goals gave the lehigh root ers many anxious moments and jack thompson who scored one of the touchdowns against the brown and white other members of the leopard team who have been play ing well this year are wilcox a speedy halfback reuter a veteran center and edraney a bethlehem continued on page six comprehensive examinations do not accomplish their purpose at lehigh was the report of the en gineering council's committee on that subject the committee of which prof e s sinkinson of the mining department is chairman stated that the purpose of the com students the committee suggested that compre hensives be abolished the report of the committee met with instant opposition by other members of the faculty who insist ed that although the examinations were not very successful under the present system were confident that better examinations and better re sults might be obtained in the fu ture the meeting was adjourned without taking a vote on the but it has never been down from the time it was put up until after the game several years ago two lafayette freshmen decided to cut the banner from its place over the quadrangle and if possible take it back to la fayette with them they succeeded in getting up on the roof and were just about to cut the ropes when they were discovered one of them escaped but his partner was held a prisoner until the middle of the game when he was released minus the hair from one side of his head many of the freshmen guarding the banner become nervous as re ports are circulated among them to the effect that lafayette has just left easton in a body and are com ing over to take the banner or that several ladders were discovered be hind one of the sections most of these reports originate right in the hall continually from 7 p m until 7 a m ever since taylor hall was built it has been a custom to hang some form of a banner or sign from the top of the building bearing the words beat lafayette the first sign had the letters illum inated with electricity the sign at tracted considerable attention be cause it could be seen from any part of bethlehem when this sign wore out it was replaced by small
