the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 12 friday october 20 2006 all the lehigh news first rotc wins ranger challenge photo courtesy of lehigh rotc a combined lehigh desales university and muhlenberg college team won first place in the ranger challenge at the fort indiantown gap in annville pa last weekend competitions included mental and physical tasks such as a written examination grenade-throwing and an obstacle course see story page 5 accounting conference gives students real-life experience by alison stravitz news writer accounting students learned about diverse career opportunities and impor tant skills for success in accounting dur ing the 15th annual conference on ac counting professionalism last weekend kenneth sinclair chairman of the accounting department said the week end had the goal of teaching lessons that couldn't be provided in a classroom we cannot do everything in the classroom where we have to do a lot of technical skills and technical topics sinclair said so there are things that go beyond that so having a weekend conference would allow students to get exposed to that too a record number of students were in attendance this year more than 100 undergraduates about 10 graduate stu dents and about 80 professionals in cluding faculty and firm representatives erin moore assistant accounting professor attended the dinners on fri day and saturday night and said the ac counting department does a tremendous amount for the students sinclair said it is moore's second year teaching at lehigh and she said it's amazing what the department does for the students you know coming from other schools where you don't see these types of activities like the accounting confer ence which really exposes the students to the profession and introduces them grant supports minorities by andrew daniels news writer lehigh has received a 100,000 scholar ship grant for african-american and hispanic students from the william randolph hearst foundations the award is an addition to the current william randolph hearst endowed scholar ship fund doubling its total to 200,000 the endowment gives about 5,000 a scholarship to minority students in financial need according to carl moses deputy provost for academic affairs the recent grant also doubles the annual opportunity to spend it sounds like a modest amount moses said but it's very important to keep the en dowment growing bonnie devlin vice president of advance ment said the grant is exciting for lehigh on a number of fronts we are in the middle of a campaign called shine forever and 100 million of the campaign is used for endowed scholar ships devlin said we've raised 64 million so far so the effort in receiving new scholar ships and grants has been very successful according to shine forever's mission statement its goal is to grow its endowment to generate permanent resources for faculty chairs scholarships and compelling new pro grams inside and outside of the classroom that ensure lehigh will continue to shine forever devlin said approximately 52 percent of students receive financial aid and having re sources such as the hearst foundation helps hearst is one of the most prestigious foun dations in the country devlin said they have a great focus on charitable goals specifi cally scholarships if you look up the other universities who also have hearst grants mixing alcohol sex makes dangerous cocktail by joshua weaver news writer the no 1 high-risk behavior exhib ited among college students is alcohol consumption that leads to dangerous decisions about sex said elaine pasqua in a lecture tuesday pasqua's lecture surviving the par ty sex & excess discussed the effects of alcohol on a person's sound judgment and how bad judgment leads to danger ous decisions about sex according to pasqua 80 percent of all first-time sexual encounters involve alcohol the seminar intertwined crowd inter the part where she distributed the cups throughout the audience and had each person switch their liquid with another person was very informative and showed just how easy it is to get an std - katie goldstein 10 action and educational lecture pasqua used humorous anecdotal examples to try to prove her point she organized a way to show how quick stds can be contracted each au dience member was given a small medi cine cup that contained a liquid sixteen cups were filled with a certain chemical that would turn red upon contact with another chemical audience members switched their liquids with three different people simulating sex and the transmission of a sexually-transmitted disease see grant page 4 see accounting page 2 see party page 2 wssssbm i — m e333t1 bfflhb amm > ms hpv vaccine eago lggj hawks to try senate what you *^ t to rebound discusses need to know wb against bucknell accreditation page 7 i t v « t page 16 bw.lehigh.edu
