patrick clark j'63 was the only multiple winner at the annual flagpole day exercises yesterday — receiving two of lehigh univer sity's top extracurricular activities awards and two other athletic awards clark who ranks in the top ten percent of his class in the college of arts and science and served as co-captain of lehighs 1962 varsity football team was presented the eastern college athletic conference merit award for academic achievement and athletic prowess he also earned the howard r bosey reiter leadership cup awarded to a member of the senior class for all-around campus leadership clark received the v j pat pazzetti trophy is the outstanding member of the varsity football team and the beta theta pi cup for all around attainment also at the ceremonies it was announced that clark had been elected to phi beta kappa national scholastic honorary fraternity william j merriam j'63 and j polk smartt j'63 were co-win ners of the geoorge j feuerbach wrestling trophy awarded to the outstanding varsity wrestler richard m smith a member of both the freshman football and wrestling teams earned recognition as the university's outstanding freshman athlete and received the j daniel nolan trophy named for lehigh's former little all-america quarterback robert bavington j'6s was awarded the john maxwell cross country cup presented to the student making the best record in cross country robert j gerstein j'6s received the sailing club trophy for being the outstanding member of the sailing club kenneth r heist in j'64 was awarded the lehigh long dis tance swimming trophy for being the most improved distance swim mer of the year richard b smith j'63 won the ernest drinker cup and medal as the best all-round member of the lacrosse team edward winchester j'63 received the mannie lamberton wilbur cup for being the best all-round member of the baseball team timothy s mock j'64 was awarded the walter j messner memor ial award as the outstanding junior member of the basketball team <■john l huff j'66 won the roy a lewis freshman wrestling cup for showing the most improvement on the freshman wrestling team during the season kenneth e turner j'6s received the fritz mercur tennis cup as the outstanding member of the tennis carl w euker j'63 received the 1902 lacrosse trophy as the outstanding varsity lacrosse play charles e lane j'66 won the james c gravany memorial swim ming trophy for being the fresh bosey reiter cup — pat clark receives one of the four awards which he gained during flag pole day ceremonies yesterday dr harvey a neville university president makes the award class officers named at flagpole ceremony robert p hess john d harp er and steven goldmann were elected presidents of the classes of 1964 65 and 66 respectively in three days of balloting held last week election results were announced by arcadia president michael h reich 64 at the annual flagpole day ceremonies yesterday after noon vice-presidential positions will be filled by charles m wistar 64 james miller 65 and wil liam rizzo jr 66 barclay griffiths 64 robert kampmeinert 65 and william mcallister 66 were elected class secretaries while robert b gib by 64 charles hobson 111 65 and david p etzel 66 were elected class treasurers students voted 51.8 for and 48.2%against the arcadia referen dum on the ballot sheets which read does the lehigh student wish arcadia to concern itself with off-campus issues yes or no approximately 80 of the voters voted on the referendum no was predominant in the ballots cast by members of the class of 64 and 65 while yes was pre dominant in freshmen ballots since the freshmen vote totaled more than the sophomore and junior vote combined the refer endum passed class elections are run by the hare system of voting the vice presidential position is determined by excluding the candidate tabu lated to be president under the hare system from the list of presi dential candidates and then tabu lating the remaining candidates in accordance with the system under the hare system the num ber of ballots cast in the election are divided by the number of seats or positions in the election the droop quota is then determined by adding one to this figure and this is the number of votes re quired for a candidate to be elected if on the first counting of results no candidate has reached this quota the candidates polling the least number of votes is dropped with ballots indicating relative preference the second choices in dicated on the dropped candidate's ballots ere applied to the remain ing candidates this process is re peated until one candidate polls enough votes to meet the quota 2nd polio shots set for may 16 the type ii sabin oral 1 polio vaccine will be avail j i able to students and faculty at ii more summer courses on tap for graduates register on june 1 an increased number of graduate courses will be offered during the 1963 summer sessions announced dr harold p thomas director of summer sessions registration for graduate work for the first session will begin june 1 and for undergraduate work june 11 more than 178 courses nearly 75 of which are open to graduate stu dents will be available during the two six week summer terms which will run from june 12 through july 20 and july 23 through august 31 for undergraduates and from june 17 through july 26 and july 29 through august 27 for graduate students regular courses will be offered in the fields of accounting chem ical engineering chemistry civil engineering economics education electrical engineering english finance fine arts geology german gov ernment history industrial engineering international relations law marketing mathematics mechanical engineering mechanics philosophy physics psychology religion romance languages srd sociology a staff of 26 visiting instructors and consultants who are authorities in their fields will augmert the regular faculty during the two sessions six workshops institutes and accelerated courses also will be given on the campus during the summer these include six-week accelerated courses covering the work of two semesters of elementary and interme diate foreign languages two national science foundation institutes in mathematics one for high school students who are gifted in mathe matics and a second for teachers of high school mathematics two educa shelter mate no 13 susan — our last sheltermate for this year no 13 was any thing but an unlucky find rooms in u.c open for exams preston parr associate dean of students has announced that the hutchinson room 303 and the davis room 403 both in the university center are opened as study rooms during the period may 17-30 second floor study rooms which will be available each day will be posted on the university center schedule board on the main floor by the east elevator use of these rooms as study rooms is contingent parr said upon the cooperation of the stu dent body in the observance of the following rules 1 ash trays must be used 2 no food may be brought to the study rooms 3 furniture in the rooms should be used carefully and properly 5 the rooms must be used for the intended purpose and shared reasonably these rooms and the designated second-floor rooms have been made available parr stated with the understanding that other parts of the center must be re served for other purposes see six page 5 see
