lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 30 bethlehem pa tuesday february 19 1963 866-0331 rock on saturday repent sunday musical extremes — lehigh audiences were faced last weekend with two contrasting performances in two days saturday the screaming isley brothers per formed in grace hall and sunday afternoon a joint concert of choral music wast presented in packer chapel by the wilson college and lehigh choirs isley temptations outdraw wilson college choir 2200-95 by timothy bird two modified rock n roll groups the isley brothers and the temptations entertained 2200 per sons with a concert saturday afternoon in grace hall the isley group consisting of three 200-pound linemen who sort of sing and a five-man backfield equipped with sax drum guitar and lime-green silk pajamas the show began when the backfield hitched up its tights and launched into a nameless cacaphony of pulsating rhythm punctuated by the moaning cries of the saxophone from the gyration of the three brothers at the front of the bandstand it appeared that we were not only being offered roc-'n-roll but a glimpse of the philadelphia branch of the radio city music hall rockettes however in all fairness to the new york originals the philadelphia dance team was consistently out of step meanwhile what had previously been merely a large group of pensive impatient music buffs eagerly awaiting to be entertained in the space of two min utes became a vast undulating ocean of collegiate in contrast to saturday afternoon's concert the service of sacred music presented in the packer memorial chapel by the wilson college choir to 95 persons was a fitting close to an exciting weekend the excitement engendered by the previous day's rock n roll and the pitt match was counteracted by this concert of chorales and anthems superbly di rected by dr charles shackleford the wilson girls were at lehigh for the first time in the more than ten years that the two schools have cooperated in performing various secular and sacred works on march 2 the university glee club will recip rocate with a joint concert at wilson offering mo zart's coronation mass among other selections sunday's program was highlighted by the missa de tous biens playne a 17th century mass by jacob obrecht other pieces were the ever-gratifying jesu joy of man's desiring by bach and mozart's lord who reignest now on high which included a very difficult solo well-rendered by soprano mar ilyn powell perhaps the most spirited item on the program 323 frosh pledged to fraternities a 54 decrease over last year names included only 323 freshmen 54 less than last year were pledged to frater nities this year the frosh class is over 30 stronger than the class of 1965 tau delta phi took the largest 19,-class while sigma nu took only four pledges the complete list follows alpha chi rho--robert a de huff william h doriss jr robert c mahoney russell v stevens and peter a gross f'66 alpha sigma phi — jeffrey d bean douglas c thing that can happen to some students his comment originated in an interview concerning the fact that the number of freshmen on aca demic probation rose to 123 last fall an increase of 35 over the pre vious year's total of 90 as director of admissions missi mer is the man who sees the mem bers of every new freshman class even before they enter the univer sity commenting on the caliber of the total class of entering fresh men missimer said that individ ually and collectively they are comparable with the last three classes he added that a check of those students on pro has already been made and according to their eval uative test scores they have every bit as much potential as the aver age lehigh student dean of students j d leith concurred commenting it isn't lack of ability that is responsible here these students are hardly sheltermate no 3 jan ie — a popular model winner of several beauty contests and life of the party at 17 our third sheltermate is currently considering cedar
