university has received sis ifational science foundation grants totaling 58,720 to support un dergraduate science education programs in five university departments four undergraduate geology students will parti cipate in mineral synthesis research aimed at gain ing a better understanding of the conditions of for mation and subsequent alteration of popper-zinc ore deposits in the field of mechanics undergraduate research made possible by the nsf grant will complement the regular honors program four honor students will be enabled to spend the summer on campus working on a project which will continue for 12 months during the summer 1 chemistry students will have an opportunity to participate in research pro jects selected from the areas of analytical organic uates will continue in the program through academic inorganic and physical chemistry eight undergrad year 1963-64 an interdisciplinary program involving chemis try and physics has been planned for two undergrad uate students one majoring in each field lu signal corps counters cadet claims avenging revenge some of the 1,700-odd lehigh rooters reply to the west pointer's cry for revenge of last year's defeat what will they ask for next year tile cracks cancel gym all physical education classes were cancelled friday as a pre cautionary measure after a crack was discovered in the tile of one of the ground floor locker rooms john s steckbeck assistant di rector of physical education said physical education classes would be held this week all walls of the building he said are intact steckbeck said a janitor discov ered a crack in the tile wednes day night he said danger signs were then posted but gym classes were held thursday because most of the students in thursday classes had lockers on the third floor students who had lockers on the ground floor were allowed to leave class or change clothes jn another locker room friday work crews began to re move tile in the ground floor locker ropm and all classes were cancelled steckbeck denied knowledge of reports that some workmen had pried a tile off the east wall in the swimming pool and that the tile was propelled across the pool he said the swimming team practiced friday and the faculty children used the pool on saturday he said other areas of the gym were not affected friday robert w numbers assistant superintendent of buildings and grounds said sunday that he'd comment at a later date steck beck said numbers was notified of the crack wednesday night wave of colds or flu strikes university city within the last week there has been approximately a 50 mc c ease over the normal incidence of upper respiratory disease said dr george w mccoy jr director of the health center when asked about the . recent rumors of a flu epidemic dr mccoy explained that the increase was not large enough to justify the term epidemic nor could the term flu be appropri ately applied since the symptoms are the same as an ordinary cold except that there is an accom panying fever the disease itself has a dura tion from two to four days said dr mccoy and waves of in creased respiratory diseases such as this take about three weeks to run their course ■.!. :\\ while dr mccoy stated that no special precautions could be taken he said that lehigh stu dents would do well to get more rest lehigh is not alone for al though three of bethlehem's four junior high schools and liberty high school reported attendance normal northeast junior high school reported that its ab senteeism has tripled in the last week sheltermate no 2 happy that's her name and who wouldn't be after meeting this blonde sophomore from wilkes-barre among her favorites are water-skiing painting sailing and collecting samples of collegiis pennsylvanius arcadia protests icy walks stairs , arcadia xvii decided in their first meeting friday night that walks and stairs on campus must be kept free of ice as a matter of student safety calling the ice-coated walks a disgrace and a danger the teni arcadians present voted unanimously to send a protest to the de partment of buildings and grounds recognizing that lehigh unlike their example princeton can neither run its steam lines beneath flagstone walks for accessability nor locate itself on a level plans the arcadians argued further that the groundskeepers were indeed adequately equipped for clearing walks satisfactorily other major business considered at the meeting included student faculty committee applications arcadia associates applications and the freshman life study com mission student-faculty committee ap plications will be closed tomorrow the applications available at the student activities desk are for two student members each for the board of publications the student life committee and the student activities committee arcadia will screen the applications at its next meeting feb 20 the report of the elections commission will also be discussed at the next meeting applications to arcadia asso ciates are now available at the student activities desk b&w will publish pledges names names of all fraternity || h pledges for this year will be f §! published in a special section f of the brown and white on f | tuesday feb 19 this will f || be the only time that these §| || names will be printed || all fraternities should have || ii received pledge list forms by |§ today house officers are f |§ urged to return these forms no || later than sunday feb 17 12 ii noon || !! complete names must be h i used on all forms pledging duties before vacation limited by rules fraternity pledgemasters and residence halls counselors re viewed post pledging activities and regulations at a meeting fri day pledges may visit their fraternity house only one evening per week for dinner 4-9 p.m and on week ends saturday noon to sunday 6 p.m until spring vacation after spring vacation sucr pledge duties as phone duty wake-ups work-days etc will be permitted in addition a pledge's activities in preparation for his initiation shall take place only when they do not interfere with his active participation in the curricular or extra-curricular program of the university this includes ath letics musical and dramatic ac tivities lectures concerts etc finally the ifc shall use its facilities e.g a permanent rush ing practices committee with fac ulty membership to discuss guide and control practices un der this program any basic changes proposed will have to be approved by the appropriate authorities
