lehigh university brown and white vo |. 74 _ no 23 bethlehem pa friday dec 14 1962 866-0331 gryphon rush rules approved the executive committees of the interfraternity council and the gryphon society last night approved five recommendations on the timing of the selection of residence halls counselors of gryphon society members amd fraternity rushing the recommendations were made by the special commission on rushing recently established by dr charles a seidle vice president for administration in a series of four meetings which end ed monday the recommendations climax years of controversy on the issue the new regulations will be followed this year along with the new condensed contacting - rushing system the recommen ditions approved last night pro vide that the counseling pro gram shall be available to fresh man applicants a time-table so that they may know when to ex pect action on their applications the deadline for acceptance of a bid to a fraternity shall be as close together as possible under a time-table set up in arcadia approves associate's report on political parties the arcadia associates political parties report was accepted by arcadia xvi wednesday night with the exception of the last paragraph and a minor amendment this acceptance lays the basis for the future development of polit ical parties on campus g sander davis j64 pointed out that this action was taken in spite of the fact that the associates do not feel political parties would be feasible under the present set-up of arcadia the associates felt that direct elections of the president and vice president are necessary before political parties would work the direct elections the associates hope would correct the present lack of stu dent interest timothy bird 64 richard miller 65 and richard lockwood 65 have been appointed representatives to crossroads africa g sander davis 64 in announcing the appointments noted that this will be the first year the crossroads africa committee has named three representatives from the university last year only two were sent the committee feels it has a very good chance of raising the amount necessary to send three students davis added that one student has offered to fill up the gap with his personal funds if need be the university center advisory committee at the suggestion of various student leaders has stated that scalpers will no longer be able to advertise on the university center bulletin board this will go fto effect this year prof robert cutler chairman of the student life committee has formed his subcommittee to work with davis subcommittee for the revision of arcadia cutler is also head of the department of music t rodger digilio 64 announced has invited the five presidents the freshman residence hall houses the president of the fresh man class clarence campbell associate dean of students preston parr associate dean of students and john rollo 63 president of gryphon society to meet with him t discuss ways of improving president john harper james lucas and ronald kahlow all 65 and gerald feffer 64 corresponding secretary alan alan eckbreth 64 recording secretary charles hobson 65 treasurer robert hess and bruce mcclaren both 64 f steven schiavo j63 president of arcadia xvi who presided at choirs to sing vespers yiulu ill cjc-uiuy the lehigh university glee club and the cedar crest college concert choir will present the annual christmas vespers at 3:30 sunday afternoon in packer me morial church performing the coronation mass by mozart the glee clubs will be conducted by professor robert cutler of lehigh and pro fessor wilbur hollman of cedar crest and accompanied by the le high university brass choir led by professor jonathan elkus soloists for the coronation ass include sue crave 64 so prano roberta kulp 64 alto bruce leinster 64 tenor and jo seph demb 63 bass the brass choir conducted by jonathan elkus will open the service with two works for brass the rst feierlicher einzug by richard stauss the second canzon noni toni by giovanni gabrieli the brass will also play for the choir processions and for the hymns student con ductor kipling adams jr will conduct the brass in the postlude to the service the fanfare la peri by paul dukas each of the choirs will perform a group of carols and open with a setting of the christmas text the cedar crest choir will sing the text set to a motet by victoria a noted 16th century spanish com poser the lehigh motet to the same text is for double chorus of men's voices by the 17th century german composer jacob handl the lehigh men will sing three french carols and the cedar crest singers an english carol a catalan carol and a gallican carol the coronation mass was written in 1779 and is one of the last two of the fifteen masses which mozart composed for the cathedral at salzberg it consists of two oboes two horns two trumpets timpani two violins and bass mozart wrote his first piece of music when he was 10 years old and altogether he composed over 50 works between that time and 1781 neville to give tv talk on local life culture dr harvey a neville president of the university will speak on the life of the bethlehem community and its many-faceted culture before the television cameras of nbc transmitted from channel 3 in philadelphia at 10:30 p.m christmas eve dr neville's two-minute speech will be part of christmas in beth lehem a show depicting the christmas city and centered around the cathedral church of the nativity other speakers on the program are arthur b homer chairman of the board of bethlehem steel co the rev dr walser h allen minister of the central moravian church and elmer l mack president of the board of the bethlehem bach choir , the very rev john n mccormick dean of the cathedral acted as narrator and the rt rev frederick j warnecke bishop of the episcopal diocese of bethlehem will speak on the meaning of christmas on the taped television program it is believed that the program is the first taped in its entirey in educational tv corporation formed monday lehigh valley viewers may soon have an educational televi sion as a result of the incorpora tion of the lehigh valley educa tional corporation monday night at a meeting at the university the unanimous vote for incor poration was made after an expla nation of educational tv programs a d benefits by james magee di rector of the educational tv net work study for pennsylvania the speaker said the new sta tion would give the lehigh valley a window to the world which you c a.nnot get in any other way the organization plans to use the commercial channel 39 in al te&town for educational purposes coverage of the proposed station will include lehigh northampton and monroe counties and a portion of carbon county dr glenn j christensen vice president and provost is among the incorporators provisions were made for large contributors to become members of the incor porating body the incorporators were in structed to write the federal communications commission ask ing that the action allocating channel 39 to the nonprofit cor poration be exploited the pennsylvania department of public instruction has filed an ap plication with the fcc on dec 8 requesting the relocation of the channel the incorporating body was also empowered to seek federal and state funds to help in the project and to prepare a pros pectus on television needs throughout the lehigh valley as well as probable costs to pars ticipating school units the prospectus is to be ready by early march to give participat ing school boards a chance to re view financial requirements prior to setting up their 1963-64 budg ets magee expressed doubt that the station would be ready for the 1963-64 school term he also said a television must be in operaton eight months after the fcc approves a construction permit however it was brought out at the meeting that it may be some time before the local group applies for the permit magee told the group that the federal government hos approved an appropriation of 32 million for the health education and welfare department to be spent over a four-year period for educa tional tv however no money has been yet made available he said that am expected 7 million will be made available next year to inaugurate the program pennsylvania is considering a bill to provide 1.8 million for the educational tv program magee said only pittsburgh and philadelphia presently have edu cational tv channels however the department of public instruc tion has asked for channels in al lentown scranton - wilkes-barre harrisburg altoona and clear field he said a preliminary engineer ing study is now underway to determine the best site for the proposed channel however he added under law it would have to be located
