lehigh university brown and white vol 74 no 12 bethlehem pa tuesday oct 30 1962 lehigh oxford to debate cuban issue tonight for lehiqh ... for oxford . . . two lehigh debaters will meet two oxford university students in the first international collegiate debate ever held here at 8 p.m today in packard laboratory auditorium the topic of the debate will be resolved that the united states should not tolerate the continued existence of the castro regime in cuba william madel of keble college at oxford and john mcdonnell a member of the balliol college at oxford will upohld the negative madel who is making his second tour of american colleges this year will be remembered for his appearance on the oxford tele vision debate with texas state a member of the oxford union society and the oxford university conservative association he par ticipates in both hockey and thomas slivinski roger walter william madel john mcdonnell brown and white in national awards the brown and white was one of five college newspapers pre sented with a pacemaker plaque by the american newspaper pub lishers association in detroit friday night the presentation was made at a friday night banquet which was part of the associated college press convention held at the sheraton cadillac hotel oct 25-27 the brown and white was one of the five college papers from throughout the nation announced as recipients of the awards last may the award recognizes papers published last year when the winners were announced last may judges announced that the five papers reflected a serious and mature tone and were selected for their outstanding news coverage quality of writing and appearance the judges said regarding the brown and white specifically bright easy-to-read typographically excellent writing follows good journalistic practices editorial page is particularly appealing pacemaker awards are presented by the anpa to help cultivate the active interest of talented young people in newspaper careers and to demonstrate the challenging opportunities offered by journalistic careers other papers winning the pacemaker awards were the michigan state university news the boston university news the torch val paraiso university and the flat hat college of william and mary banquet begins annual campus chest campaign functions of the world university service were described last night by the organization's executive secretary makato fujita at the campus chest kick-off dinner in the univer sity center asa packer room more than 100 persons attended the dinner the annual campus chest drive will he held nov 5-10 the goal of this year's campaign is ss,cod the world university service receives 30 per cent of the funds fujita said the world university service is a program which challenges you to take the responsibilities in the world community he emphasized that the service is financed entirely by students it is easy to go to a big foundation to ask for money but much more difficult to go to students he said we are very proud of the help students have extend ed fujita added wus is not supported by american students alone he said students the world over al though they may not contribute as much as the american students do contribute what they can money raised in the campus chest campaign will be apportioned to wus the lehigh stu dent fund 40 per cent the united negro college fund the national scholarship serv ice and the fund for negro college students 15 per cent and the bethlehem community chest 15 per cent the lehigh student fund was formed this year it will support programs affecting le high students directly such as operation crossroads africa according to clay l mus selman 64 publicity chairman the united negro college fund the na tional scholarship service and the fund for negro students all assist students in the united states carl l mcconnell 63 is chairman of the campus chest campaign this year concert well played by dr arthur p gardner small audience associate professor of german it is impossible to guess what most members of the lehigh com munity were doing last friday evening but it is decidedly possible to assert that whatever they may have been doing they missed during that time an extremely rewarding experience in the form of an intimate concert which was presented at 8:15 p m in the osbourne room to an embarrassingly meager audience the performers were violinist louise rood and pianist irene jacobi and their program covered music of almost four centuries extending through schubert and brahms down to a modern com poser frederick jacobi the couperin pieces en con cert which opened the program began with a stately prelude in which it was a sheer delight to hear the tone of the viola as solo instrument the five parts of the w ere well played through ut with perhaps a slightly faulty balance between the instruments in the middle part but with a lovely fourth part entitled plainte in which extremely mov ing sections of elegiac mood were shaped around an elegantly deli cate middle section for solo piano the brahms sonata in e flat opus 120 no 2 new to this re viewer seemed to have both the strengths and the weaknesses that characterise many late brahms works after a lovely introductory lyrical theme the first movement goal-line grapplers — looking more like a tv tag-team r than a football pla - three columbia men keep lehlgh's mike noel from scoring in saturdf s game taylor studium alcohol banned by athletic dept a ban on alcoholic beverages in taylor stadium has nothing to do with recent speculation on en forcement of state regulations by the liquor control board william b leckonby director of the division of athletics and physical education said yesterday a five-point memorandum of rules and regula tions to be observed at football games in taylor stadium was distributed to all students and faculty members yesterday leckonby said the regulation that alcoholic beverages are not to be taken into the stadium is not new but is in line with established university policy we are not trying to do anything drastic he said he said the regulations are primarily intended for next year but they will be in effect at the one remaining home game with kings point nov 10 a system of enforcement to go into effect next year is being studied leckonby said the regulations state no person who is carry ing a package or receptacle suspected of containing alcohol will be admitted another part of the regulations bar dogs from the stadium during football games individual violators will forfeit all fall athletic department i.d card privileges including compli mentary tickets on parents day and reserved seats for the house party game living group violators will lose group forfeit group priorities
