photographs of the contestants should be submitted to the student activities desk wednesday and thursday oct 10-11 all pictures should be marked with the name of the contestant the name of her escort and the name of her escort's living group ten finalists will be selected by the class officers from the photo graphs submitted and the pictures will be printed in the oct 16 issue of the brown and white student voting for four finalists will take place all day wednesday oct 17 and the queen will be chosen from the four finalists the night of the dance stan kenton's orchestra and johnny and the hurricanes will pro vide the music for the friday night dance in grace hall stan kenton will be on the lower floor of the hall and the hurricanes will enter tain on the upper floor the dance will be held from 9 p.m to 1 a.m flowers at the dance are discouraged tickets to the dance may be obtained in room 206 of the univer foundation gives 600,000 grant will help erection of lu engineering building a 600,000 gift toward the chemical engineering and metallurgy building included in the centennial development fund has been granted to the univer sity by the longwood foundation of wilmington del announcement of the gift—the largest single grant for the development program—was made to day by dr harvey a neville university president estimated cost of the building is between 2.5 and 3 million the projected site is on east packer avenue between webster and adams streets the gift was transmitted to the university by henry b dupont president of the longwood foun dation the foundation was established by pierre s dupont in 1937 its activities include support of higher and secondary education and the develop ment of the longwood gardens in wilmington star-gazer — ralph n van arnam campaign arcadia unanimously passed a resolution wednesday night call ing for all future arcadias to re frain from participating in pro grams designed to pressure the adminnistrations and student gov ernments of other campuses the national student associa tion of which arcadia is a mem ber asked that the student body send between 50 and 100,000 post cards to the student body of the university of mississippi last year nsa asked arcadia to send postcards to the gover nor's conference after conferr ing with the administration last year nsa's request was rejected on the grounds that arcadia's primary concern should be with campus affairs because the arcadia constitu tion makes any resolution passed by a two-thirds vote a by-law ar cadia passed a resolution on the nsa request arcadia requested that the educational policy committee look into the feasibility of a study day between the last day of classes and the beginning of finals in the spring semester clarence b compbell associate dean of students commended ar cadia's selection for the fall se fester houseparty judiciary com mittee he said the committee appears to me to be the best group ever to have been assembled for this agency and i am very pleased to record unqualified con currence in addition to the quality level of the individual's involved he added i find noteworthy arca dia's action in expansion of the and a vice-president of alcoa aluminum parents may also visit saturday classes as weu as laboratories including the universal testing machine in fritz engineering labora tory the ninth annual exhibition of contempor ary american paintings in the alumni memor ial building galleries and the great south sea exhibit in the rare book room of the library are also open to parents a buffet luncheon for parents students and faculty will be held in grace hall at 11:30 a.m members of the university dames club will serve as hostesses at 1:30 pjn parents may attend the le high-gettysburg football game in taylor sta dium as guests of the university the band and glee club will present their annual parents concert saturday evening at 8:15 in the auditorium of broughal junior high school under the direction of professor jonathan elkus the band will present works of handel john philip sousa and norman lloyd stu dent conductor roger s blair 64 will direct the band in a selection from wagner's lohengrin professor robert cutler head of the de partment of music will conduct the glee club in a program including five italian mountain songs jacob handl's o magnum myster ium let us now praise famous men and marching to pretoria edward j roberts and theodore a may both 65 will be student accompanists the student conductor of the glee club will be joseph z demb 63 the band and glee club will combine to perform gustav hoist's turn back o man and the alma mater the public is invited to attend the concert parents and their sons are invited to attend the sunday services in packer memorial chapel at 11:00 a.m the reverend dr a roy eckardt head of the department of re ligion will be the speaker the individual residence halls and fraterni ties will entertain their parents during the remainder of the weekend more than 3500 parents are expected to at tend 600,000 goal set for annual giving fund a 600,000 goal has been set for the annual giving fund frank c rabold president of the alumni association has announced the funds will be used for the acquisition of additional computer systems band and laboratory equipment teaching internships and sum mer scholarships in addition the money will aid in the renovation of the president's offices and will also support the construction of more living accom modations on campus the 1961-62 annual giving fund which concluded its campaign in june with a total of 617,541 es tablished records at the univer sity the total amount exceeded the previous high by 100,000 with the support of more than 45 per cent of the alumni both the 1959-60 and 1960-61 annual giving fund campaigns earned national recognition for achievement from the united states steel foundation and the american alumni council edward a curtis vice president of
