lehigh university brown and white vol 74 — no 4 bethlehem pa friday sept 28 1962 866-0331 writer expresses uniqueness of self o'faolain says j writer nas xo express tne uniqueness 01 nimseii oean v r aoiain noted irish critic and author said last night at a public lecture entitled how a writer writes chiefly the short story o'faolain a phi beta kappa visiting scholar spoke before an over flow audience which filled three university center rooms the osbourne room the hutchinson room and the faculty lounge speaking on the problems which a new writer must face o'faolain said the first hurdle is to acknowledge the fact that writing is a very private profession and a lonely relating this to his own personal life he said most people's faces drop and they become uncomfort able when he tells them he is a writer he said writers are sort of out of it in society another problem a new writer must face is the difficulty of com munication and the deficiencies of language o'faolain pointed out that the language of writing is different from the language of journalism when a writer uses a word he must give it more impact and vitality than the usual common place meaning of the word he ex plained this can be done most easily in a poem where the ar rangement of words helps to vital ize words he added o'faolain described writers as different persons because in writing they exploit themselves by using their personality he called a writer's personality the flame by which a writer lights up the when advising novice writers o'faolain said he tells them to write about what you know but instead the writers don't write about what they know but what they think they should know o'faolain explained that al though these novice writers like to imitate they slowly begin to think about an experience of their own similar to the one they are imitat ing and their own personality gradually enters their writing a writer is a researcher o'faolain said only he is look ing for himself a writer explores human beings and finds a little of phi beta kappa lecturer — scan o'faolain noted irish writer and critic who appeared at sev eral meetings on campus this week under the sponsorship of the lehigh chapter of pbk — b&w photo by mcl snyder reader's filter needs cleaning writer advises by richard sine did you ciean yuiu iiittu wua . if you haven't you should de clared scan o'faolain irish writer critic and phi beta kappa visiting scholar at a lecture yes terday on the topic trial by plea sure o'faolin described the filter as something in everyone consist ing of past experiences and ideals as set down by parents teachers and traditions o'faolain's contention was that reading is an emotional rather than a rational experience — a distinction which he claimed is too often overlooked by modern literary critics to become emotionally involved in a novel the writer said a read er must first remove his filter to achieve total escape there's nothing wrong with es capism although i know it's not highly regarded in this country o'faolain said he added how ever that the intelligent reader usually tries to aim his level o escape at something higher than mickey spillane . when a reader becomes totally absorbed in a story o'faolin said he has otfen identified himself with one of the story characters the typical reader he said allows annual funds granted by activities.committee campus activties will receive a total of 27,000 in appropriations from the student activites committee this year based on official figures released by parr this year's total appro priation is 4800 more than alloted last year additions to the list of ac tivities include endor a campus literary magazine and the lehigh review a literary publication the following allotments were made for the 1962-1963 academic year brown and white 8450 wlrn 2050 endor • 100 lehigh review 1000 band 3000 glee club • 3075 debate 1800 mustard & cheese - 3100 arcadia 2350 senior class 63 250 junior class c 64 250 sophomore class 65 250 freshman class 66 100 interfaith council 100 university center program $ 500 exam break proposed arcadia drops policy study some of us consider that it is bad educational policy to have classes one day and finals the next lawrence whitcomb asso ciate professor of geology and arcadia advisor said wednesday whitcomb made the remark at the arcadia meeting prior to a vote to discontinue plans for an educational policy committee arcadia set up a committee to investigate the possibility of start ing an educational policy com mittee last week jerry l moreno 63 president of mcclintic-mar shall house and former residence halls council representative to arcadia wias named chairman of the committee the committee found that a stu dent - faculty student appraisal committee exists and its functions would overlap those of the pro posed educational policy com mittee the student appraisal com mittee is planning to revise and expand its program this year for this reason and because of the greater influence it has with the faculty arcadia decided to disband the educational policy sommittee arcadia will however send the educational policy committee's recommended program to the stu dent appraisal committee to see how their revised program works out if their revised program does not work out r steven schiavo 63 president of arcadia said ar cadia will continue its formation of the educational policy com mittee the proposed program of the arcadia committee was to act as laison between the student and the faculty to solve problems that may arise between these two bodies to act as a clearing-house for student opinion concerning matters of edu cational policy such as repeated use of hour quizzes and finals tim ing of finals with the end of classes and scheduling hourlies within the last three days of classes other purposes would be to in vestigate the possibility of having a day between the end of classes and the beginning of finals in the spring semester and to report to the president dean of students educational policy committee faculty arcadia and the student see reader page 2 see davis page 7 see author page 2
