place in all three academic colleges this summer dr alan s foust became dean of the college of engineering sept 1 head of the department of chemical engineering since 1952 foust filled the post vacated by loyal v bewley who resigned dr carl h madden dean of the college of business administra tion since 1960 was granted a leave of absence until september 1963 dr herbert m diamond charles mcfarlane professor of theoroetical economics was named acting dean during maddens absence dr w ross yates associate professor of government was named associate dean of the college of arts and science he will continue a limited teaching program dr leonard a wenzel became the new head of the department of chemical engineering sept 1 four professors in the college t of arts and science were granted leaves of absence the four are joseph b mcfadden professo and head of the division of jour nalism for two years dr albert wilansky professor of mathe matics dr gilbert a stengel assistant professor of mathe matics and dr samir a khabbaz assistant professor of mathe matics all for one year bewley resigned as dean of the college of engineering to return to a position with the general electric co in schenectady n y he was professor and head of the dr alan s foust new slc plan sets early rushing system a new contacting-rushing plan—compressing the entire process into 10 days at the beginning of the spring semester will be folowed by fraternities this year the student life committee proposal was ac cepted by dr charles a seidle university vice president for administration late last spring the plan is similar to one proposed by the slc in 1959 but which was not put into effect the slc report notes that the present schedule of contacting and rushing is viewed by a large ma jority of instructors and students as academically destructive in a letter accepting the plan seidle said pro visions for post-rushing activities need to be looked at more broadly he said he would appoint a stu dent-faculty commission this fall to iron out cp erating details he said the question of the timing of the selec tion of freshman residence halls counselors or gryphons would be referred to the proposed com mission last week seidle told the brown and white he is row studying the selection of persons to be appointed to the commission under the new plan contacting begins jan 28 the monday before spring semester registration and runs through the first four days of the week on legistration day tuesday contacting is from 9 a.m to 11 pm rushing begins the following saturday feb 2 and runs for the next six days contacting is also held on the same six days friday feb 8 is the traditional day of silence with no rushing or con tacting scheduled on saturday feb 9 bids are distributed in 1959 following a seven-month study the slc lcb may investigate campus frats campus fraternities were ad vised last night to take precau tions against admitting non-frater nity members to their parties and serving alcoholic beverages to un derage persons g raymond hodil 63 interfra ternity council president told rep resentatives to last night's ifc meeting that the liquor control board has asked the university for access to all fraternities on week ends hodil later told the brown and white that his suggestions jr,e sulted from discussions with preston parr associate dean of students he emphasized how ever that there has been no offi cial advisement or an official pol icy statement on the matter he said his information on the possibility of action by the penn sylvania liquor control board were in part based on rumor he indicated the university might take stricter action in issu ing permits for parties he further indicated that the possibility of liberalizing alcohol restrictions on students over 21 years of age was under study if such were the case restrictions on students not of age might be tightened the distinction between the right of the lcb to enter campus fraternities located on university property and itjown fraternities was also raised several representatives sug gested refusing lcb agents per mission to enter houses hodil advised that pledges should be posted at the doors of every fraternity to insure that they are closed and the bartenders should be over 21 representatives speculated last night on the possibility of lcb agents investigating activities at fraternity parties this saturday in other action it was reported that the local chapter of phi delta theta fraternity has been put on social probation for the fall se mester and fined 300 the pen alty was for violation of alcoholic beverage regulations during rush ing last spring the highwaymen — popular folk-singing group all wesleyan college students will entertain in grace hall saturday night in concert to be sponsored by sophomore class loyal v bewley 2 years for hp violations crows on pro alpha chi rho fraternity has been placed on social probation for two years for an aggregate of extreme of action in disregard of good order and regulations gov erning the 1962 spring house party j d leith dean of stu dents announced the action was taken upon re commendation of the houseparty judiciary committee in the may bulletin of disciplin ary actions leith also reported so cial probation for phi gamma delta and sigma nu and 21 dis ciplinary demerits for 13 under graduates alpha chi rho's social probation will continue until june 2 1964 with possible modification of ef fect of this action after october 1 1963 on the basis of certain stip ulations suggested by the house party judiicary committee with evaluation of chapter against these stipulations to become a re sponsibility of the university com mittee on student activities said leith sigma nu was placed on social probation again on recommenda tion of the houseparty judiciary committee for disregard of regu lations governing the spring 62 houseparty from may 7 1962 un til june 2 1962 with the exception of parents weekend-mother's day affairs phi gamma delta was placed on soical probation until oct 18 1962 with the exception of parents weekends may 12 and 13 and oct 6 for disregarding spring 62 houseparty governing regulations nine sophomores two juniors two seniors and one fifth year business-engineering student re ceived disciplinary action the dean announced a sophomore business student for plagiarism in a term paper in economics 12 was dropped from the course and denied credit there in for the spring 62 semester five sophomores were assessed two disciplinary demerits each for deliberate and persistent disregard of good order in the dining serv ie upon recommendation of the highwaymen appearsaturday the highwaymen a popular folk-singing group will appear in a concert at grace hall at 8 p.m saturday tickets for the program are available at the student activities desk or from any member of the sponsoring sophomore class cab inet at a cost of 2.00 each chairs will be set up on the gym floor of grace hall and re freshments will be served this quintet of students from wesleyan university sing and play a variety of instruments and have made several well-received record ings as freshman pledges of the same fraternity they were re quired to present an act for a rush ing activity it was in this man ner that their success as a group had its start their tenor section numbers three with dave fisher singing lead he is the group's musical arranger and wants to take a ph.d in musicology other tenors are bob burnett wesleyan's pole-vault champion and a government major and steve trott who was raised in mexico city and taugh to play the guitar by a mexican garbage man chan daniels baritone was born in buenos aires and is president of wesleyan's international rela tions
