lehigh university brown and white vol 67—no 50 bethlehem pa tuesday may 22,1956 un 6-0331 service to lehigh of 6 is over 2 centuries six members of the university faculty will retire at the end of june after a combined 211 years of service to lehigh the six will be guests of hon or at the annual faculty dinner tuesday may 29 in grace hall dr stanley j thomas professor of biology dean robert p more of the college of arts and science dr roy b cowin head of the account ing department prof fay c bartlett assistant director of physical educa tion dr paul l bayley professor of physics and dr earl l crum pro fessor and head of the department of classical languages are the six retiring members of the lehigh staff at the tuesday banquet the hill man award for a senior member of the faculty and the robinson prize for a faculty member under 35 years of age and the rank of associate pro fessor will be presented dr thomas has been a mem ber of the faculty here since 1912 and has written many pa pers and several books on bac teriology and hygiene he received his b.s in 1912 from lafayette and m.s and m.a de grees from lehigh in 1913 and 1916 in 1928 dr thomas received his ph.d from the university of penn sylvania he served as an instructor and as sistant professor here from 1912 to 1916 and after a seven year tenura as research bacteriologist and asso ciate director of mulford laborator ies returned here in 1923 dr thomas is a member of the society of american bacteriolo gists the american public health association the american social hygiene association and sigma xi dean robert p more was named head of the arts college in 1949 fol lowing a long tenure as professor of german born in bethlehem he was gradu dr stanley j thomas dean robert p more dr roy b cowin prof fay c barhett dr paul l bayley dr earl l crum watson solons exchange fire by ray farkas ousted three weeks ago by ar cadia for an excessive number of unexcused absences from the group's biweekly meetings james watson 57 told the brown and white re cently that i had more important things to do watson also made several other statements pertaining to the student governing body which drew sharp replies from 10th arcadia president william collins 57 and current arcadia member mahlon simon 57 watson said last week that he con sidered other things more pressing than arcadia meetings when asked why he failed to attend i had things more important to do than sitting down there arca dia and being tied up in parliamen tary procedure for a couple of hours things like a house meeting class meeting two hour quizzes the next day and a fraternity basketball tournament the tournament night was the last meeting i missed collins was unsympathetic to ward watson's excuses most farkas steele get b&w radio posts ray farkas 57 has been named editor-in-chief of the brown and white for the fall 1956 semester farkas succeeds arthur j roth 56 robert w steele 57 will succeed h w taylor 56 as manager of radio station wlrx the appointments made by the university board of publications were announced friday other top b&w appointments announced by the board include robert rosen 57 business manager wil liam e leclere 57 editorial direct tor and george l beezer 57 man aging editor wlrn's top posts will be fill ed by john c parker 57 chief engineer walter p grabowsky 58 business manager and john hood 58 program director farkas a journalism major is for mer desk editor sports editor and news editor of the b&w a former member of the freshman football team farkas is currently active in pi delta epsilon steele an electrical engineering engineering physics major has been a member of wlrn for the past three years during that time he has been an engineer an announcer a member of the board of directors of the station and program director he is also a member of the univer sity board of publications aiee pi delta epsilon lehigh sounds and is the lighting director for the music festival peter burdash 58 will re place leclere as news editor of the b&w for the fall wayne ray farkas bob steele pick up books by next wed purchasers of 1956 epitomes who have not picked up their copies are reminded by tom burgin business manager of the yearbook to do so as soon as possible books can be pick ed up in the epitome office or the journalism office each day until 5 p.m books which are not picked up by next wednesday will be forefited enabling the epitome to sell the books this provision was noted on the subscription blanks giving the purchasers two weeks to pick up their books after the release date which was may 16 a limited number of extra books plus those forfeited will be released after june 1 students who signed up at the distribution desks will have first preference and will be notified by mail or phone senior weekend begins june 16 senior weekend will begin satur day morning june 16 with the sen ior picnic followed by a graduation ball that night baccalaureate exer cises the following afternoon and culminated by the 88th annual com mencement exercises monday mornn ing june 18 in grace hall with about 500 seniors receiving degrees and approximately 100 advanced degrees being conferred by presi dent martin d whitaker the commencement address of henry cabot lodge jr u.s representative to the united na tions will highlight a weekend participated in by dignitaries from the church the military and the diplomatic corps rev henry knox sherrill presid ing bishop of the protestant episco pal church will deliver the bacca laureate sermon at 2:30 p.m sunday afternoon june 17 brig gen edwin s chickering commander of the 405 th fighter bomber wing and commander of langley air force base in virginia will present commissions monday night to graduates of the rotc pro gram rehearsal for the graduation exersises will be held on thurs day may 24 at 4:10 p.m with andidates assembling in pack ard lab auditorium the senior picnic will start at 11 saturday morning at hunsicker's grove red arrows with 56 will point the way to the grove tickets for the event may be pur chased at mrs moravec's office price of the picnic with choice of lobster or turkey a jazz concert at 3 p.m and the dance that evening at 9 p.m will be included in one ticket costing 3 if your assessment is paid and 7 if not the jazz in the afternoon will be supplied by willie restum until 6 p.m the dance saturday evening will be held at the hotel bethlehem with music by lee vincent at midnight following the dance a smorgasbord will be available at the hotel this is included in tha price of the ticket baccalaureate exercises will begin at 2:30 p.m on sunday in packer chapel with bishop sherrill deliver ing the sermon candidates for de grees must be at packard lab at 1:30 semester's last b&w this is the last regular issue of the brown and white for the spring semester summer school editions will be published during the first session starting on thursday june 21 pops concert saturday beer will flow and music will fill the air this saturday when the brown and white band presents its seventh annual pops concert in grace hall the beer will be of course the birch beer which is part of the free refreshments which will be served music will be supplied by the brown and white band profes sional soloists and finalists in the inter-living group singing contest the brown and white band will present a selection of popular num bers from their vast repertoire so loist william fairlamb will present george gershwin's rhapsody ir blue other soloists will be evelyn lear and tom stewart tom
