evening spoke on the rela tion of scholarship to athletics em phasizing scholarship fourteen hundred and thir ty-five students enrolled in the undergraduate courses at the 65th opening of the university this week this number is ex pected to be increased some what by founders day of the total number enrolled 447 were freshmen a large majority of whom 299 in all were registered as engineers the business men were next with a total of 86 registrations and the college of arts and sci ence received a total of 62 freshmen the filling out of the atten dance cards was a new feature of the registration assistant dean curtis estimated that the filling out of these cards saved at least six weeks time on the part of one clerk in the regis trar's office and as a result of this saving of time mr curtis hopes to be able to post the chapel attendance record every two weeks instead of only once a term the registration process proceed ed in a more orderly manner and with less crowding around the ta bles than was the case last year this was partly due to the employ ment of student cops to maintain quietness and keep the lines in or der this had a tendency perhaps to slow up the checking clerks in as much as they did not feel so hurried in their work the new plan however prevented numerous mistakes which would cause the students concerned difficulty at a later date the slowness in check ing thus caused will be remedied in february dean curtis declared by increasing the staff of checking clerks a survey of the enrollment fig ures show that the number of new men in the freshman class has in creased from last year's figure of 436 at this time last year a total of 1384 men had paid their tuition and at this date a total of 1323 have paid their bills fraternity council sept 8 in drown hall emphasized the fact that each house would be held responsible for the freshmen staying there and that the rules and penalties of last year would be rigidly enforced during the pres ent rushing season the interfraternity council wrest ling cup which is awarded yearly to the champions of the council will be presented to the theta xi fraternity which won it last term two committees were appointed as follows social — ernest j cress well sigma nu walter j tomlin son alpha chi rho and melville c bingham psi upsilon and the athletic committee will be — alex ander t special permission of col m.h thomlinson head of the m s and t department at lehigh faculty holds first meeting president richards wishes success to new members no man is truly educated with out an appreciation of cultural val ues president c r richards at the opening meeting of the school year wednesday afternoon in packer chapel told approximately 500 freshmen their guests and members of the faculty in the process of education a man may acquire knowledge with out refinement which involves an appreciation of the best in man ners in morals and in learning — that is an appreciation of the good and beautiful as contrasted with the base and ugly the president de clared president richards defined edu cation as a process of developing to the fullest extent the latent or potential qualities of an individual it is a process which is measured by the capacity of the brain to solve new problems or meet new situa tions that are beyond the individ ual's previous experience in con trast he defined training as a form of educational process in which practice and experience is taught to enable the individual to develop some skill in the performance of certain duties a group of animals can be trained to do tricks but they cannot be taught to reason when different situations face them it is often very difficult to define culture in such a manner that the definition will be universally ac cepted there are styles that are re garded as beautiful and good by one group and may be considered ugly by another there is no simple for mula by which culture could be readily acquired therefore if we acquire culture we shall need not alone to gain knowledge but to emulate those qualities of heart and mind that seem to be dominant in a large number of individuals who appeal to us as the type who bring the greatest joy and good to the world and whom we consider in our minds to be refined cultured gentlemen or gentlewomen in closing pres richards said to you young men who are in the last stage of preparation for life i would recommend the need to make the most of the opportunities which the university offers to ob tain a true education of the type that i have attempted to describe with sufficient training to enable you to quickly adapt yourselves to the practical work of the world the exercises opened with the singing of the traditional lehigh hymn o god our help in ages past followed by a reading from the bible and a prayer by the rev d w gateson j.d benedict i e 32 president of the arcadia welcomed the fresh men in behalf of the student body and g c doering president of the sophomore class explained the reg ulations which the freshmen as sumed at the close of the meeting activity lists wanted omicron delta kappa requests that all seniors prepare a list of their activities to date these lists should be handed in to robert l baird jr president at the delta phi house before thursday sept 25 those seniors who submitted their names previously as juniors will not be considered now unless they supply new lists localization of humor to the le high campus and to the city of bethlehem is the new policy,,adopt ed by the staff of the lehigh burr at a meeting wednesday night in drown hall instead of rambling articles satyrizing college life in general the burr will strive in the future to burlesque the faculty stu dent body and organizations of le high alone this plan offered by dean c m mcconn is an attempt at reviving and stimulating interest in the pub lication and also as a method to bring new ads from local merchants and business organizations the policy was considered a real aid to the magazine and was included in the burr platform dean mcconn advised in propos ing his plan that the burr should not hesitate to keep names out of the jokes and articles as such point ed criticisms even though biting will create more interest than ang er henceforth the burr will ride and facitiously attack each profes sor and organization on the campus several of the planned-for num bers will be an around the cam pus number a fraternity number a saturday night number and a house party number the around the campus number will be re leased on or about university this week this number is ex pected to be increased some what by founders day of the total number enrolled 447 were freshmen a large majority of whom 299 in all were registered as engineers the business men were next with a total of 86 registrations and the college of arts and sci ence received a total of 62 freshmen the filling out of the atten dance cards was a new feature of the registration assistant dean curtis estimated that the filling out of these cards saved at least six weeks time on the part of one clerk in the regis trar's office and as a result of this saving of time mr curtis hopes to be able to post the chapel attendance record every two weeks instead of only once a term the registration process proceed ed in a more orderly manner and with less crowding around the ta bles than was the case last year this was partly due to the employ ment of student cops to maintain quietness and keep the lines in or der this had a tendency perhaps to slow up the checking clerks in as much as they did not feel so hurried in their work the new plan however prevented numerous mistakes which would cause the students concerned difficulty at a later date the slowness in check ing thus caused will be remedied in february dean curtis declared by increasing the staff of checking clerks a survey of the enrollment fig ures show that the number of new men in the freshman class has in creased from last year's figure of 436 at this time last year a total of 1384 men had paid their tuition and at this date a total of 1323 have paid their bills fraternity special permission of col m.h thomlinson head of the m s and t department at lehigh faculty holds first meeting president richards wishes success to new members no man is truly educated with out an appreciation of cultural val ues president c r richards at the opening meeting of the school year wednesday afternoon in packer chapel told approximately 500 freshmen their guests and members of the faculty in the process of education a man may acquire knowledge with out refinement which involves an appreciation of the best in man ners in morals and in learning — that is an appreciation of the good and beautiful as contrasted with the base and ugly the president de clared president richards defined edu cation as a process of developing to the fullest extent the latent or potential qualities of an individual it is a process which is measured by the capacity of the brain to solve new problems or meet new situa tions that are beyond the individ ual's previous experience in con trast he defined training as a form of educational process in which practice and experience is taught to enable the individual to develop some skill in the performance of certain duties a group of animals can be trained to do tricks but they cannot be taught to reason when different situations face them it is often very difficult to define culture in such a manner that the definition will be universally ac cepted there are styles that are re garded as beautiful and good by one group and may be considered ugly by another there is no simple for mula by which culture could be readily acquired therefore if we acquire culture we shall need not alone to gain knowledge but to emulate those qualities of heart and mind that seem to be dominant in a large number of individuals who appeal to us as the type who bring the greatest joy and good to the world and whom we consider in our minds to be refined cultured gentlemen or gentlewomen in closing pres richards said to you young men who are in the last stage of preparation for life i would recommend the need to make the most of the opportunities which the university offers to ob tain a true education of the type that i have attempted to describe with sufficient training to enable you to quickly adapt yourselves to the practical work of the world the exercises opened with the singing of the traditional lehigh hymn o god our help in ages past wednesday night in drown hall instead of rambling articles satyrizing college life in general the burr will strive in the future to burlesque the faculty stu dent body and organizations of le high alone this plan offered by dean c m mcconn is an attempt at reviving and stimulating interest in the pub lication and also as a method to bring new ads from local merchants and business organizations the policy was considered a real aid to the magazine and was included in the burr platform dean mcconn advised in propos ing his plan that the burr should not hesitate to keep names out of the jokes and articles as such point ed criticisms even though biting will create more interest than ang er henceforth the burr will ride and facitiously attack each profes sor and organization on the campus wooden beams the inner walls were made of plaster board and the outer walls were made of metal lath covered with stucco the building was always a potential fire trap so smoking in the building was always forbidden the result of this ruling has always been a dozen clerks or more standing out side puffing away the company's time brodhead's field on which the building was erected was a popular athletic field among the boys of bethlehem many a future athlete played his first contests on this plot and among these is joe mclernon who at present is playing center on the varsity football team
