lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 41 tuesday april 17 1956 lu bethlehem pa grace hall to go medieval for hp friday night ball decorated as a great medieval hall with rising white columns and royal king arthur shields the lower floor of grace hall will provide the setting for whirling knights and their fair ladies at knights rendezvous friday night of houseparty weekend april 27 to 29 the formal affair will take place in a regal atmosphere within the majestic hall and the color combination will consist of royal shades of red white and blue multicolored lights will spotlight the couples as they dance ' according to a contract between the decorators and the hp decora tions committee the ceiling will be covered with dark blue fabric drapes and suspended from them will be three ornamental chandeliers the two bleacher sidewalls be tween the promenade walk and the entrance will be decorated with the same blue fabric used for a covering it will cover the walls completely around the sides of the dance floor and at regular intervals large translucent columns will extend from a base on the floor to the royal blue ceiling the base will be approximately three feet square and two feet high it will be opaque inside the base will be an auto matic revolving colored spotlight and it will be focused up through the translucent columns the rising columns will glow from this light which will change colors automatic ally all evening the columns themselves will be approximately two feet in diameter and constructed of white cloth there will be approximately 10 of these columns colin h hershey chairman of the committee for decorations said cutout stars will be attach ed along the sidewalls and end walls between the columns draped with a red fabric and a regal white overdrape the wall in back of the orchestra will be super imposed with several king arthur shields the orchestra platform will be lighted all entrances and exits will be appropriately decorated with a regal white overdrape the top floor of grace hall will carry out the main theme but to a lesser extent its ceil ing sidewall and endwall dec oration will be the same as that of the first floor vertical drapes of evening blue fabric doorways and exits will be decor ated with the same regal overdrape of white fabric and the background for the orchestra will be red fabric with white'overdrape hp band leaders—pictured above are elliot lawrence left and eddie grady the leaders of the two houseparty bands this spring both the lawrence aggregation and grady's commanders are well known in collegiate circles for their danceable music deadline today for class bids a total of 55 petitions for the of fices of president secretary and treasurer have been taken out by aspiring officers of the classes of 57 58 and 59 the petitions must be returned — with the necessary 3q signatures — to the arcadia office today the largest number of peti tions was taken out by members of the class of 59 twenty-seven petitions were taken out 12 for president six for secretary and nine for treasurer the class of 58 took out the sec ond largest number of petitions of the 13 taken out six were for the presidency three for secretary and four for treasurer nine petitions for the three of fices were taken out by members of the class of 57 four took out peti tions for the office of president three for secretary and two for treasurer pay 4 room fee for dates today houseparty dates of residence hall and town men will be housed in dravo richards and drinker houses according to john antrim 56 resi dence halls council social chairman reservations and payment of the 4 fee — a 50-cent increase over previous houseparties — may be made in the bamboo room of dravo house b-lll today and tomorrow from 8 to 10 p.m the fee includes linen service chaperone charge and the rhc breakfast saturday morning in lamberton hall antrim said fewer sections will be used to house the dates this year he said dates would be placed in dravo a fourth floor and section 3-a of richards and the fourth floor and section 3-a of drinker house the reason for the 50-cent hike according to antrim is that fewer dates are usually housed at spring houseparty than in the fall ex penses remain essentially the same a penalty of 50 cents will be charged for those failing to sign up today or tomorrow correc tions on room registrations may be made monday april 23 from 8 to 9 p.m in dravo 111 antrim also pointed out that a 50 cent penalty will be charged for can cellations ford gives 20,000 for engineering study dr clarence h faust president of the fund for the advancement of education announced saturday that lehigh is one of 34 institutions of higher learning in the nation to share in grants totaling 501,615 awards are being made on the recommendation of the committee on utilization of college teaching resources under the chairmanship of chancellor henry t heald of new york university lehigh will receive 20,000 during the 1956-57 academic year to finance a study of its engineering curricula the study will be made under the supervision of dean loyal v bew ley of the college of engineering dr faust said the problems of re cruiting more able people for col-t lege and university teaching pro viding them with adequate prepara tion for their work and utilizing their competence more effectively are the most challenging ones facing higher education for the next ten or 15 years if we are to avoid a grave de cline in the quality of higher education new and imaginative ways must be found to organize and deploy our possible teach ing resources so as to maintain and even improve the quality of education for a much larger number of students in ameri can colleges and universities the lehigh project will study du plication and overlapping in staff courses and laboratories among dif ferent branches of engineering edu cation it will include a study of de signing basic courses applicable to several branches to emphasize com mon factors a study will also be made here to achieve maximum consolidation of laboratory facilities for the use of two or more departments and pre paration of any necessary textbooks or instructional material other institutes receiving sup port are using a wide range of approaches to the problem of providing a high quality educa glee club-band concert enjoyed by large crowd by jerry collyer about 1,800 students parents and friends of the university enjoyed the music of the combined music orga 7 nizations last saturday evening thg band and glee clubs performed ad-j mirably together even though it was the first time that the two or ganizations have performed together at lehigh after the brass choir had com pleted dukas fanfare from la peri the audience was en thralled by the baritone solo of marvin tatum 57 the combin ed groups played edward grieg's landsighting next other offerings of the band in cluded berceuse and the finale from the firebird by igor stra vinsky death and transfiguration by richard strauss and in the sec ond half canto yoruba by pedro sanjuan were also played tenor e robert scott 57 was the soloist in has sorrow thy young days shaded and irish folk tune the glee club offered edvard grieg's stirring brothers sing on high barbary a traditional sea chantney was offset by the clip this to your sun visor ... could this be
