lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 36 tuesday march 20 1956 bethlehem pa hp probers submit report covering 9 areas of event the student-faculty committee on houseparty has submitted its final recomendations to the office of the dean of students covering nine major areas with specific recommendations on each point these are not the rules for conduct at spring houseparty but only recommendations prepared by this committee at the request of dean wray h congdon and submitted to his office for consideration the report recomends restriction of houseparty to lehigh students as much as possible with all outside guests being required to have dates it recommends that lehigh students be permitted to attend houseparty as stags identification tags for purposes oi identification only were suggested for all houseparty participants closing time for saturday morning is suggested to be 4 a.m and sunday at 3 a.m with strict observance of these times with all violations causing sus ension of houseparty privileges for the living group for a year or individual disciplinary action against the student responsible or both recommendations for chaperones include the suggestion that faculty wives be resident chaperones as much as possible with their hus bands remaining with the living group all night included in this area is the recom mendation that all living groups is sue special invitations to about 12 faculty members and their wives to participate in special events not as chaperones but as social partici-i pants and guests of the living group in the area of drinking it is recommended that serving of hard liquor be restricted to cocktail hours before dinner on friday and saturday afternoon 1,000 attend weekend in spite of weather by nick lapara the success of ifc weekend compares very favorably with that of last year in the words of john silinsh ticket chairman for the greek affair approximately 1,000 tickets at five dollars apiece were sold at ifc weekend one year ago about the same number of tickets were sold but at the price of 3 also tickets were sold separately then for the jazz concert the play and the evening dance as silinsh commented it was expected that sales might drop a little because of the rise in price but all are quite gratified that there was no appreciable drop the increase in price came about as an effort to make ifc weekend a bigger function all around by hiring name bands the rather unappreciated weather of the weekend did not seem to deter the turnout any as hungarian hall was filled to overflowing saturday afternoon the snowy atmosphere however did hold up the spring street stompers and they arrived an hour late at the already jubilant scene the stage held not only the seven piece band though as enthusiasts crowded in for a real ear-full due to the great number of people there the foamy brew that awaited in a room to one side of the hall had to be stop ped three times to make it last this dinted not the popularity of the stompers at any rate who are rated by their fans as among the best dixieland bands any where the mustard and cheese produc tion of twelfth night by shakes peare captured the gaiety of the oc casion and left the audience rolling with laughter this play originally planned by the author as a fit piece for the rev elry that occurred on the last of the 12 days of christmas thrusts its out spoken and caricatured characters into the most impossible situations with highly hilarious effects the production has received favorable reviews grace couldn't make it—part of the crowd that jammed grace hall saturday night for the monte carlo dance was bitterly disappointed to find out that grace and her prince just weren't able to quite make it so they took their disappointment out on the tables and on the dance floor rihard maltby left bottom two chins leads the orchestra dry run—after the beer was over the spring street stompers finally arrived the arid setting was hungarian hall saturday afternoon people and students started arriving about 1 p.m the stompers oozed in at 3 and the 11 halves dripped their last drop at 3:19.27 unofficial time m&c show well received by jerry collyer shakespeare's twelfth night en tertained a medium to large crowd of ifc members and dates at the mustard and cheese production last saturday while a smaller group viewed the light and gay farce a beautifully costumed and staged play last friday evening robert o'brien 57 as sir toby and gilbert moskowitz 56 as malvolio drew equal praise for fine performances o'brien's toby was robust and well sustained moskowitz handled the monumentally pom pous malvolio with good pacing and aplomb some viewers felt however that both of these characters had their scenes stolen from under them by john v thompson 57 as sir an drew aguecheek his exaggerated characterization won the plaudits ot the playgoers delmont kennedy 56 as the duke sustained the romantic lead with expertness feste the clown played by morton crandall 56 was capably handled — a role that today is not too familiar to theatre audi ences merle letowt as maria added pepper and spice to the plot with nefarious antics perpetrated up on malvolio her performance was lively and vigorous pat mcshane as viola added warmth and charm in her dual role of maid and boy rose marie navar ro played the melancholy olivia with deftness and charm the supporting cast silas morse 59 kneeland whiting 58 michael driscoll 58 wayne diehl 56 rob ert pierson 57 richard heckler 59 and henry george 56 added sincerity and vigor in activities social regulations and university services the dean's letter follows on feb 29 the dean of stu dents convened a meeting of stu dent government leaders and the faculty advisers of the groups represented to discuss problems of student participation in gov ernment upon request of the students the dean of students agreed to appoint three student faculty committees to survey such areas as student activities social regulations and universi ty services as they affect the students arcadia was requested to recom b&w wins 100 award for editorial on safety the brown and white's dec 16 illustrated editorial on safe driv ing won first prize of 100 as the best individual editorial submitted in the eighth annual college news paper safe driving contest a na tional safety contest some 300 entries were sub mitted in competition for the nine prizes offered in six classi fications the brown and white editorial was written by editor in-chief art roth with pictor ial display arranged by mahlon b simon managing editor a letter from byron c hayes as sociate dean of students congratulate ed the brown and white staff foi the joint effort which made this recognition possible first place for the safety campaign many articles in the field of daily publications was won by the university of southern california steubenville college won the first prize in the non-daily campaign efild aside from these two cam sac fo meet for petitions the student activities committee established last friday afternoon a plan to resolve the major problem of social petitions which persistently arrive for approval after the dead line the arcadia committee de cided that the committee as a whole should meet every tues day noon to consider petitions which are submitted to the com mittee for acceptance after the official deadline the official deadline is noon mon day prior to the saturday night function however the dividing line is that the petitions submitted on time are sure to be passed—provid
