lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 35 bethlehem pa tuesday march 13,1956 un 6-0331 to the victors . . l lehigh's sophomore sensation joe gratto newly crowned 137-lb eastern intercollegiate wrestling champion is surrounded by well-wishers follow ing his triumph saturday night c the new lineup of intercollegiate champions includes perm state's sid nodland 123 john johnston state 130 gratto ed eichelberger lehigh 137 most outstanding david johnson pitt 157 donald huff pitt 167 edward dewitt pitt 177 and william oberly perm state hwt r lehigh's eichelberger receives the john a flechter award immediately following his award for the most outstanding wrestler dr wald to speak on origin of life ' a new experiment in stimulating the extracurricular intellectual in terests of the university community will begin at 8 p.m thursday march 15 in packard lab auditorium at that time and place the cooperative lecture series committee will join with sigma xi and the howard eckfeldt society to sponsor dr george wald of the biologi cal laboratories of harvard uni versity as its first lecturer dr wald whose skill as a lecturer plus his renown as a biochemist made him ols's first choice will speak on current theories of the origin of life the lecture will be open to all at no charge for admis sion recognized as an outstanding ex perimentalist dr wald is particu larly known for his research on the photochemistry of vision in the early 19305 following receipt of his ph.d from columbia university he first identified vitamin a in the reti na he accomplished this in the laboratory of otto warburg in berlin-dahlem while he was a dr george wald stompers headline ifc's jazz fling after greek weekend is officially inaugurated with exchange dinners among fraternities the whirlwind events of sat march 17 will open to the dixie strains of the spring street stompers prom 2 to 5 p.m saturday after non the stompers will hold sway over jazz devotees at hungarian hall third and evans sts the day will be rounded out with the mustard and cheese production of twelfth night and the informal monte carlo dance in grace hall one 5 tick et will cover all events the stompers with their basin street beat are considered by many to be the finest college dixieland band around formed at williams college in williamstown mass the aggregation has two carnegie hall concerts weekend stands at virtual ly all big eastern schools and a slewi of club dates in their short but high lighted history the founders of the group are jim hayne who wields an exciting slip horn and kenny redmond on traps when the 7-piece outfit breezed into carnegie the had walt lehman with his omnipresent clarinet bob ritter and his front line cornet don coates at the keys bill fischer banjo-man and tom yankus and his bass among the campuses they have hit are those of dart mouth colgate mit skidmore vassar smith and wehesley off-campus the band has been seen at hotels resorts conven tions and at nightspots when the stompers played a two , week stand at the savoy cafe in the hub the management stated that they drew the heaviest business in two years of name band policy in fact the front window was removed the band encased there while the police cordoned off the street just to accommodate the crowd panthers cop third title ike still reigns by fred townsend pittsburgh captured its third consecutive eastern intercollegiate wrestling assn tournament title saturday night in grace hall as coach rex peery's undaunted panthers swept through to victory in the 157 167 and 177 pound title bouts to edge out perm state by the narrowest of margins 74-73 lehigh finishing third for the fourth consecutive year had bright moments when its undefeated wrest lers joe gratto and ed eichelberger came through with titles at 137 and 147-pounds respectively at the same time taking away the match title from state by beating john pepe and dave adams once again the versatile dynamo captain eichelberger nursing a stomach virus and sprained ankle was awarded the most valuable wrestler trophy in rex peery's words who presented ike the trophy a true champion was awarded the honors eichelberger although seeded first in his weight class the luck of the draw placed him in an elimination bout and ike had to wrestle three times friday and twice saturday ike easily took all five bouts and added enough cumulative points to his tournament records to be awarded the john fletcher trophy for his performances throughout the past three years fletcher oddly enough was the only other wrestler to be awarded the most valuable trophy twice eichelberger was the only defending champion to hold on to his title perm state nearly took the team title as a result of pitt's bill hulings and ed peery being upset in the 123 and 130 pound weight classes respectively ; hulings went into the 123 finals against perm state's sid nodland hul ings escaped in the second period for a 1-0 advantage and was in the pro qess of tacking on a time advantage point in the third period when nod land escaped to knot the score in the first overtime period nodland got away and held a 2-1 lead but in just five seconds of the second period hulings escaped the boys were fairly cautious for the next two minutes and nothing happened the ref eree's decision went to nodland in a bout that could hardly be called any thing more than a flat draw fourth seeded joe alissi undefeated springfield college wrestler i ended ed peery's 28 match win skein in the semi-finals of the 130 class j winning 4-3 after an exciting but productionless first period alissi reversed on peery in the second period and drove hard scoring a near fall i peery tried to come back reversing on alissi and scoring an escape ~" ~~~ • point in the final period but peery couldn't get the wild gymnast to the mat it marked alissi's 42nd varsity win against only three losses joe gratto seeded second to john behavior held chief hp issue a basic self-contradiction in the student position on the houseparty issue is claimed in a release to the brown and white issued sunday by the student-faculty committee on houseparty the committee's statement which precedes recommenda tions to be made this week in dicated that students want more responsibility even though they are unable or unwilling to i carry out responsibilities al ready held the committee's press release fol lows ;
