lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 33 tuesday march 6 1956 lu bethlehem pa 30 straight wins finished lehigh wrestling captain edward eichelberger is about to reverse and finish off west point's 157 pound contestant george robertson in just 21 seconds of the second period ike is also about to finish his collegiate dual meet career with an outstanding record of 39 wins one loss and one draw he scored 29 falls inexperienced army squad falls 25-3 for 8-3 season lehigh's wrestling team concluded another success ful dual meet wrestling season saturday night by trouncing an inexperienced army squad 25-3 three thousand fans packed grace hall as lehigh took seven of eight bouts from the cadets for the victory and thus finished sixth in the eiwa standings sophomore bobby myers bait for the leading eastern wrestlers in the lowest weight classes turned the trick and scored a first period fall that started coach gerry leeman's crew to its eighth win in eleven bouts captain ed eichelberger's pin at 157 clinched the match for lehigh putting army in arrears by a 19-0 count for ike it was his 31st consecutive mat victory over the past two years like lehigh ike registered an 8-3 record this season 8 pins and 3 decisions sophomore joe gratto also finished with an undefeated record in dual meet competition scoring six falls and winning five bouts via a decision myers started the match on a good note for lehigh fans he took jim ellis down early in the first period and after stopping a pair of attempted escapes by the cadet the little 123 pounder turned on the pressure fans screamed as the timekeeper announced 15 sec onds and referee lee merrill finally acknowledged the reverse chancery and body press at 2:56 tom deppe outpointed ben waller at 130 pounds by a score of 5-1 deppe held a commanding but slim lead all of the way and nearly caught the visitor off guard on a air of occasions lehigh's frank eck met henry hatch in the 137 weight class and won 4-3 in another close match eck outwrestled hatch in the final two periods to take his match at 147 west point's russ harris caught joe gratto off guard and took a 2-0 lead over the undefeated grappler from there on it was all gratto gratto tried in every way possible to pin the elusive cadet but couldn't quite do it joe delighted the fans with his reversal at the beginning of the second period which seemed to consist of gratto rising two feet in the air and harris grabbing for void space lee merrill referee at the lehigh-yale match and saturday's meet again had ed eichelberger working overtime somewhat larger george robertson was eager to tussle with ike but lehigh's captain came out on top in the opening minute by spurting under around and over the west point entrant ike applied an almost perfect wing hold to robertson and near ly had his man pinned before the end of the first period 69 scoff laws demented in disciplinary actions a total of 101 students received disciplinary demerits or were sus pended for periods of one semester or one year according to a report of the discipline committee actions for the 1955 fall semester two students acquired five de merits and one semester suspen sions as a result of illegal pos session and use of alcoholic bey erages in residence halls plus perjury in testimony one of the aboye individuals was suspended for a one-year period be cause the additional five demerits brought his total to six the largest number of demerits was assessed to 69 upperclassmen who failed to obey campus and bethlehem traffic regulations three of the 69 students were denied use of a car for one se mester in addition to receiving one or two demerits sixteen drivers who were campus vio lation repeaters were issued de merits while 50 students had ac tion taken against them in the form of demerits as the commit tee became aware of the number of students who failed to pay city traffic tickets seven freshmen and six upper classmen in the residence halls sys tem were reprimanded warned and assessed three demerits for posses sion of illegal beverages the upper classmen collected their demerits for beer parties only three other freshmen had ac tion taken against them by the dis ciplinary committee they assumed all costs for the theft of a lafayette tresolini gets study award dr rocco j tresolini associate professor of political science has been granted a social science re search council fellowship for sum mer 1956 the award which is one of only 15 in the nation entails a chance for intensive research training in law and social rela tions at the harvard university law school the fellowships are designed to afford postdoctoral scholars an op portunity to become familiar with methods theories or bodies of sub stantive knowledge relevant to their research interests which either be cause of their recent development or beaverette chorale ' delightful relaxing 1 uver l/a persons enjoyed a delightful and relaxing concert by thq beaver college glee club friday night in packard lab auditorium the girls presented a program of light and classical selections fea turing works of bach schumann and liszt featured was the presen tation of a composition and arrangement by the regular conductor of the group dr w lawrence curry miss inta eglavs student conductor did an admirable job of conduct ing the girls several solos were performed including numbers on the flute piano and the marimba the program was climaxed by a selection of beaver college songs in cluding their alma mater after the concert the girls were guests of le high's glee club at a dance in drown hall gleeful beavers—the beaver college^glee club>awmlbtthtl7s persons attending a concert in packard lab friday night following the concert the visiting girls were guests of the lehigh glee club at a drown hall dance maltby orchestra headlines greek weekend mar 17 music by richard maltby and his orchestra will climax the ifc week end march 16 and 17 maltby will perform on saturday night in grace hall beginning at 8 the spring street stompers will be featured in the afternoon warm up at hungarian hall at third and evan sts friday night there will be a pledge banquet at the masonic temple exchange dinners among the fraternities and four houses hosting the officers from the other fraternities a blanket charge of 5 will be made for a ticket which will cover all events including friday night's mustard and cheese performance of twelfth night each fraternity participating in the weekend must purchase tickets for 75 per cent of their house back in the era of the big bands maltby was plying his musical trade at the congress hotel on the off-night of benny goodman's featured band good man wandered in one night heard maltby playing and offer ed him a job on the spot in a short time maltby was bg's hey-day of goodman fame number one arranger in the goodman and maltby's fortunes rose as the notes flowed from the arranger's pen maltby inked six flats unfurnished and the hit be came one of goodman's first million records shortly the arranger decid ed it was time to settle down so he could spend some time with his wife and he moved to chicago employers were not long in seek ing his talents and two hours after maltby arrived in chicago he be came head staff arranger for the cbs radio network other offers beckoned however and he soon joined paul whiteman on the american broadcasting system and remained for several years finally maitby decided to take the big jump to new york his reputation preceded the young bandman and soon he was do ing arrangements for the major television radio and recording companies maltby's splash into the record field the echoes of which have not rights 19 others plan for 1957 music festival we are going to continue to at tempt to resolve our differences with the administration and go ahead with our plans for a festival next spring stated prof albert a rights faculty adviser to music festival speaking at the first orga nizational smoker of the 1957 pro duction thursday night in drown hall throughout the meeting at tended by 20 prospective festiv al workers prof rights empha sized that festival is an active organization and that work in the salt mines storage and of fice space under grace hall would continue during the meeting the future as well as the history of music festival was discussed and illustrated with films slides and drawings most of the program was aimed at advance planning of the 57 festival which may be a modified form of this year's planned production a recently perfected fm micro phone was demonstrated planned to alleviate the acoustic difficulties with lead voices next year and work yet to be done to make these new mikes available for next spring was outlined different aspects of the pro duction of festival were briefly outlined including the immense accounting set up lighting prob lems photography and projec tion plans and actual settings and stage lay-out it was pointed out that aid is also needed for lighting work in the pro h p committee invites opinions forms report suggestions and opinions of facul ty members and students on the conduct of houseparty are invited by the special committee on house party according to a statement re leased by the committee yesterday the complete text of the statement
