lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 13 tuesday nov 8 1955 university 6-0331 garner turns gh into gay cabaret by tom kelly jazzman errol garner transformed staid grace hall into a night dub for a fleeting 123 minutes last friday true ihc champagne and chorus girls that usually go with such an atmosphere were not present but for the approximately 2,000 scl fans largest crowd for this type of concert in scl's 20-year history garner and his combo more than made up for their absence spotlighted on a raised su:ge in blackened grace hall garner bass man eddie calhoun and drummer denail bess flew off into a sphere of elaborate improvisations on stan dards and seemed a 1 t iirn almosi ( h'i i'nu to the audience qarner played like a man pej ed'as he drummed into the melodies with his singular complicated intro ductions with calhoun and etess picking up till beat on recognition stout strummer calhoun pro vided an amusing sidelight completely carried away with the adventure into jazz he rocked hack and forth with his beloved bass clinging to it al most hut not quite like a wo man he also added his hoarse vocal talents to many of the ' numbers in an ol'fhand manner that complemented the atmos phere considerably pianist garner held to a rigid program of alternate fast and slow numbers and drew his first spontan eous ovation of the evening when he broke into lullaby of birdland as his second selection throughout the classic garner style was evident it ■consisted of three main segments for each mel ody elaborate introduction stan dard melody imd elaborate conclu sion m & cs henry to be plushest since julius the december production of mus tard and cheese s slated to be their most elaborate in many years it is shaespeare's henry iv fart one which was recently seen at city thealer new york * the only similar production was julius caesar played five years ago the title role of king henry is being played by newton kinsey 57 newcomer to the acting society delmont kennedy 57 also being seen for the first time is cast as prince hal last seen in stalag 17 is player george kantra 58 creating hot spur the comic character of fal staff will have dual interpreters robert o'brien 57 and arthur an derman 56 who are vying for the final role club president robert silver ton 56 seen in detective story stalag 17 and the tavern last year will play douglas white henry iv part one is one of shakespeare's historical plays it contains some of his best comedy scenes bird gator goy dogs 13 yrs hong lena over numerous fraternity mascots in cluding 12 dogs a canary and an helped the phi delts lena celebrate her birthday party by pre feriting gifts ranging from super charged dog candy to a goldfish gifts included bavarian beer from captain richard c gott schall and a goldfish from al bert the alligator from pi kappa alpha i"'au from alpha tau omega an nounced his entrance by a loud ai k the rest of the assembled ca es joined tau and the resulting din could be heard blocks away lena showed the younger genera tion what an old dog can do by drinking all of her beer a lent not attempted by the rest of the aspiring college canines the oldest dog on campus en joyed her ride in a new con vertible after the first quarter of the vmi game when asked to comment on the party lena complained of a hang over and said my party was no better than any houseparty ever held at lehigh arf-arf . . . barf-barf—beer and biscuits arc enjoyed by lena phi delta theta mascot and friends at saturday birthday party seniors eligible for 15 awards in essay contest p'iv first prizes of 150 each will go to the winners in this year's wil liams senior essay prize contest dr j burke severs head of the depart ment of english and chairman of the williams award committee an nounced recently awarded annually for the best essays written by thr regular members of ihe senior hass tho williams prizes include five sec ond place awards of 100 each and live third prizes of 50 each three awards are given in each one of the live fields of study — business administration philosophy psychology english and history government and international rela tions lssays will be judged on excell ence in thought plan development argument and composition awards will be made by the faculty upon recommendation of the committee uu the williams prizes however the committee can if they choose rec ommend that no award be given if in any case an essay does not meet its standards of merit entrants in the contest should consult the committee member of the respective department as to the choice of subject and plan of work subjects must be approved no later than nov 15 completed works will be due before april 15 in addition to dr severs the committee includes dr howard j b ziegler head of the department of philosophy dr frederick a bradford finance department di rector prof h barrett davis head of the division of speech dr w l jenkins of the psychology depart ment and dr george d harmon director of the department of his tory and fiovernment game statistics tau delts to obtain game tickets first tau delta phi has been given first chance for tickets for the lehigh lafayette game next saturday selected from cards represent ing the 30 fraternities 39 dorm sections and town group and town council given five and six cards respectively tau deit along with the next 14 groups picked may secure their primary tickets next monday morning between 9:10 and 10:10 runner-up in the drawing was pi kappa alpha followed by phi delta theta drinker 2a town council and chi phi each successive group of 15 names will be allotted an hour's time in which to pick up their tickets at the athletic office group two will get their tickets between 10:10 a.m and 11:10 a.m and this procedure will be followed throughout the day the last group including numbers from 75 to 81 will get their seats from 4 p.m to 4:30 p.m members of town group and town council will not procure their tickets at the time specifi ed in the list students in the b & w goofed in quoting dean congdon on eating in the oct 25 issue of brown and white it was erroneously stated that dean wray h congdon told arca dia that a concessionaire would run the food arrangements in the uni versity center a subsequent inter-1 view with the dean revealed that j his statement was completely op posite to that reported the university will hire a food manager to take charge of the din ing facilities it will not be a con cession said congdon when asked whether this means the university will run the eating system the dean replied we will engage the ser vices of a food manager there will be no profit-taking .. packers crush keydets 39-0 by ray farkas grinding out six touchdowns and 410 yards plus throwing in a thrilling goal-line stand and a 65-yard punt just for kicks the lehigh packers all 36 of them—romped to a 39-0 win over the hapless keydcts of virginia military institute pre-game fears that the south might rise again mere quickly dis pelled by three waves of union troops under the command of gen | eral william leckonby th virginia volunteers never quite got a foothold on yankee soil as the northerners scored twice before the first period ended dan nolan spearheaded the first half attack that netted three scores tom faillace dick pennell and wall pijawka shored the spotlight with the magnificent sophomore quarterback offensively while de fensively a line minus austy short bill doremus and bruno pagnani put up a goal-line stand within lour yards of the promised land second and third string packers look over in the second half and continued the merry scoring pace while spi lanced over their pftthrtamfe frantically trying to find mi who tiw'v were watching lehigh scored its first touch down just as the last notes of the national anthem echoed back from the windish sick and beneficial society hall on pack er avc with 30 seconds gone vw quarterback bill nebraska hobbled the ball on the first play from scrimmage and bill brady recovered on the visitors 24 after a penalty temporarily stall ed the packer attack on the 24 walt pijawka took off around left en the vmi 5 pijawka unintentionally added two-yards to his romp fum bling as he went down on the-5 but recovering three yards away from paydirt two plays later nolan fell over frona the one bill doremus missed his second extra-point of the year with 2:45 gone in the first period the keydets picked up their only first down of the initial stanza on the next series of plays but halfback jim strain intercepted an aerial by fresh man
