pitt battle scoreless till fourth quarter vol xxvil no 12 music and speech at y.m.c.a meet cross country team victorious friday's smoker instills spirit entire c.e faculty attend civil meet many sport writers at saturday's game new york philadelphia and pitts burgh writers witness the pitt victory rutgers title holders downed by 40=15 score in lehigh's fiist meet mrs j l stewart and mrs j h bickley render duet and w m wood gives address game room of gym packed with enthusiastic student-body at pitt smoker davies wizard half=back scores two touchdowns after 55 minutes of scoreless tie^l 14=0 short snappy and to the point speeches feature strength tests and eats good spirit closest and hardest fought battle on taylor held in many years speeches music stories etc instill a fight that was evident saturday the lehigh cross-country team opened its season with a rush sat urday when they defeated rutgers by a 15-40 score • six lehigh men started against eight for rutgers and five lehigh men had crossed the finish line before a single rut gers man arrived the race was run in a drizzling rain while the course was a sea of mud the rutgers course is 4j miles long and is quite hilly al though not as difficult as the one over which the home team has been practicing maintained it throughout the race led by captain carr they quickly set up a pace which the rutgers harriers found difficult to keep up iwith on the hills especially the the lehigh runners took the lead from the crack of the gun and one hundred men attended the first civil engineering meet of the year which was held in the fritz engineering laboratory last thursday evening the entire teaching staff of the civil depart met was present and each member gave a short speech colonel lang was also present and as usual en tertained with jokes when called upon professor r j fogg who gave a speech of welcome to all present emphasized the necessity of being a member of the society in the course of his remarks he also said that in order to be successful a man must be a good mixer and that out side activities should be a part of every man's college life in clos ing he said that the high standards of the department must be kept up and that studies should come first after the speeches two determin ations were made and all present were asked to guess the result the first was made upon a vertical test that the lehigh-pitt game was one of the big features in satur day's football schedule is attested by the fact that some of the most eminent sporting writers of the country witnessed it the follow ing reporters came to lehigh last saturday r v mccarthy new york tribune ; s b hunt newark sunday call w sensenderfer evening bulletin m n rawlius philadelphia inquirer horace reed philadelphia press r l bethlehem office of the western union handled the sending of the news some difficulty was encountered in the new york office and the delay there was responsible for the failure of news filed at bethlehem to appear in early editions of some of the new york papers state special abandoned a three quarter inch iron rod the second was to find the compression of a twelve inch concrete column using the eight hundred thousand pound relay testing machine after these determinations had been dem onstrated the use and operation of the pilton impulse water wheel and the types of sprayers used in sewerage disposal plants was ex plained the meeting adjourned to saucon hall where refreshments were served the next meeting of the society will be held december fourth and president straub desires any c.e.s and n.e.s who were not present at this meeting to make it a point to come out dr snelling to speak at first chem meet the lehigh-penn state special project has been abandoned and our team goes practically unsup ported to fight one of the hardest battles of the entire season — and on a foreign field everyone who has purchased a ticket on the special can have the tickets redeemed by returning them to the person from whom the ticket was bought however it is hoped that those who have already purchased tickets and some more too will go to see the game despite the fact that the ' ' special will not run ex-naval men attention uei;igh men gained as continual practice over the difficult home course has made them proficient in this line the defeated rutgers team is the present intercollegiate title holder having won this honor last year three of the nuen on the rutgers team placed in the intercollegiates last year eiehenfelder who fin ished behind the first five lehigh men being intercollegiate cham pion and also winner of a stevens rutgers meet last week captain carr and his teammates deserve much credit for their splen did performance carr led all the way using excellent judgment in pace as is shown by the fact that only twenty-one seconds separated the first five lehigh runners carr's time was 24:15 n s merkel was second in 24:20 w n laughton was third in 24 25 2-5 ; c n fancher fourth in 24:36 2-5 and j boardman fifth in 24:36 3-5 a eiehenfelder was the first rut gers runner home his time being 24:48 following him same j c markley of lehigh and the person is downed under trials because his pleasure is done away with and he soon becomes a grouch while one whose social attitude is one of generosity and interest in the wel fare of others is a more mines and was in charge of work on explosive mixtures ; he was also in charge of large testing opera tions in pittsburgh his address is to be on the subject of nitro starches as used in hand-grenades public speaking no one will be called upon for more talks than he cares to give fighting every second of the first 55 minutes of play the brown and white gridiron warriors held the famous pittsburgh eleven to a scoreless tie when with five minutes left in the last quarter davies the visitors ' clever halfback ran through the entire team for the first touchdown that has been registered against coach keady's team this season and a few minutes later intercepted a long forward pass and raced over for another tally thereby giving the panthers a 14 to 0 victory as hastings suc ceeded in kicking both goals the game which was played on an exceedingly slippery field and during a continuous rainfall was astic spectators who were on their feet during the greater part of the playing urging the brown and white to victory and the final score is far from being a fair com parison of the two teams strength which met each other last saturday as the lehigh eleven played a game which although ended in a loss still snowed them to be among the leading college teams of the east if the game had been played on a dry field there is little doubt but what there would have been a de cidedly different result as time and time again the forward pass was worked against the visitors with practically no opposition and only the condition of the field kept the ends from catching many of those which were unsuccessful before the game the student body headed by the lehigh band paraded around the field before en tering the cheering sections and from the time the game started until the final whistle they kept up a continuous cheering which was not without results as it in stilled into the team a spirit which enabled them several times to hold the visitors for downs when the goal line was in danger both teams entered the battle minus the services of their captains buzz herrington acting captain in mac donald s place and hastings in place of dehart the game though exceedingly hard fought throughout was on a whole cleanly played and few substitutions were made by either team for the brown and white the punting of herrington wysocki's consistent line plunging and the stellar defenseive work of spagna pons and mccarthy were the out standing features while the visit ors owe their victory mainly to hastings and davies in the back field and stein on the line ' in the first quarter lehigh play ed almost entirely a defensive game and a punting duel was staged throughout the game be tween herrington and davies and hastings neither having a marked advantage considering the slip
