was married to joan stafford saturday afternoon april 15 in the rectory garth howland fine arts head dies in hospital garth a howland head of the department of fine arts died at 9 p.m last night in st lukes hospi tal he was 62 he received his b a degree from the university of north da kota in 1912 and master of arts degree from harvard in 1923 he came to lehigh in the fall of 1927 as an assistant professor of fine arts six years later he was pro moted to associate professor and made head of the department he was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1946 prior to coming to lehigh he taught art in the felton minn high school for two years and served as assistant professor of fine arts at indiana university from 1923 to 1926 he was superintendent of schools at amenia n d from 1921-23 lead digbies cops astray dean palmer has served lehigh for the longest period 48 years as professor and head of the de partment of german dean of the college of arts and science and as chairman of the lehigh adminis trative committee which was formed f olowing the resignation of dr clement c william as presi dent in 1944 native of maine dean palm er received his bachelor of arts degree from bowdoin college in 1900 and later studied at har vard university the university of heidelberg and the university of zurich the university of padua conferred the degree of doctor honoris causa upon him in 1922 and moravian college for men the honorary degree of doctor of lit erature in 1941 he has been active in local civic affairs since coming to lehigh having served both on the bethle hem school board and association of america and the american as about 2 a.m the man on duty at the police department answered the phone and a muffled voice asked this is lambda chi alpha what happened to the under takers they haven't showed up yet said ed haltenhof president of lambda chi alpha i didn't know anything about it until i read it in the globe-times must have been a joke of one of the other fraternities here on delaware avenue when the man on duty asked who was calling the voice hung up further attempts of the police to trace the calls have been futile with several hundred peo ple at lambda chi now employed as a medical technician at allentown general hospital william h murphy jr a senior was married to shirley else langefeld of scotch plains n j last week in the baptist church at fanwood a
