lehigh university brawn and white vol 67 — no 1 bethlehem pa friday september 23 1955 university 6-0331 gridders up for cornellians in ithaca opener tomorrow brown line strength to face fast red backs renewing a series that broke off back m 1947 and started m 1887 le high and cornell clash m ithaca n.y tomorrow afternoon m what should be a very interesting bit of warfare the big red reported to have the fastest set of backs m the his tory of the school is considering this game to be nothing more than batting practice for the following week's colgate contest the packers on the other hand will unveil an entirely rebuilt line and a partially new backfield but what will provide the best lehigh strength lies behind the starting eleven coach bill leckonby has more prospective stars on his bench than he has had m some time holding their first real live battle of the season last week m scrimmage against george washington university of washington d.c the brown 2nd white came out on top 13-12 but only after a last minute surge that netted them their final touchdown and the game winning extra point both teams played well on defense but both of them left out any good sign of offense except to signify that the offensive side needed a lot of practice leckonby has drilled his team to the bone during the past week m hopes that the scoring machinery of his club will operate at near perfection at least after the g w scrimmage he was pleased with his defense and the way his team came back m the clutch but he had every reason to be taken back by the offensive display lehigh's line this year is going to be the stronghold if the scrimmage work is any indication of the later season the line averages somewhere around 195 pounds with two large tackles at 220 pounds still open for question is the backfield at present leckonby has two returnees that saw action last year bob carrasquillo and bob naylor will be the starters m the halfback slots the fullback position is re served for a sophomore who seems to have filled it with ease walt pi jawka will hold down that position the big question still lies m the quarterback position leckonby has two good prospects m line for the post both john moyer and soph dan nolan are currently fighting for the post moyer is the present starter but by tomorrow nolan may have the job the whole story of lehigh football so far is m the line which is the best leckonby has had to work with for some time with army transfer bill doremus and soph pete williams accounting for 440 pounds of starting tackles the line is quite solid capt bruno pagnani turned m a very cre ditable performance m the colonial scrimmage m his guard slot pete johnson will be m the other guard position back to hold down the center berth will be alex maslowsky a 195 pound returnee from last season's line moose will be backed up by promising sophomore bill mclaughlin who will probably see a lot of action as maslowsky has been out of practice for several days
