urn grade point average may seem like a small matter but to gryphons it is a symbol of what they feared might happen when dean of students william quay became their boss moreover many fear that this proposal represents only the beginning of some surprise changes which e plans to pull out of his sleeve later ugh some gryphons might object to laracterization former dean of mcc clarence campbell guarded the news analysis gryphon society against any attack with a sort of protective paternalism in fact some gryphons called him a father figure campbell's retirement on the first of this year and the announced consolidation o the residence office into the dean o students office created an uneasiness in the society some of the uneasiness stemmed from the isolation of ad ministrative departments which con solidation was designed to cure the gryphons were unfamiliar with quay anc quay didn't know them very well either but consolidation also brought a concern on the part of the gryphori'over the future nature of the society some even wonderec if there would be a society and the ad ministration's desire to reduce expenses only added to some expectations that the society would be a convenient target for budget cutters especially since camp bell was no longer present to defend the organization spring study to evaluate sex bias in programs by eileen canzian an evaluation of university policies and practices concerning students will be conducted next semester to determine whether there is any discrimination on the basis of sex according to lora liss af firmative action director title ix of the education amendments of 1972 states no person . shall on the basis of sex be excluded from partici pation m be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal assistance although the law requires that a review of programs be conducted by july 21 1975 the university hopes to complete its review by early may said preston parr vice president and dean for student affairs it is uncertain whether the evaluation will assess possible discrimination against minorities title ix requires only that policies be reviewed to determine whether there is sex discrimination according to parr the university may not be able to meet the july 21 deadline if it attempts to examine policies for both minority and sex discrimination we have a moral commitment to all minorities but a legal commitment to have the evaluation on the basis of sex done by july 21 parr said liss noted that the university has been operating under title vi of the 1964 civil rights act which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race color or national origin title vi pertains to all university policies including undergraduate ad missions liss added however that title vi did not require that a specific evaluation be conducted as does title ix among the areas to be reviewed m the evaluation are graduate admissions financial aid facilities housing and courses and extracurricular activities including athletics counseling rules and regulations research and student health and insurance benefits must also be reviewed as a private institution the university's undergraduate admission talk cancelled a lecture by author-humorist jimmy breslin scheduled for tonight m packard lab auditorium has been cancelled due to illness m breslin's family by donna frabotta rhodes questions warren report perhaps we will never know the truth behind the kennedy assassination chief justice earl warren told president lyndon johnson m 1964 as he handed him the warren commission's report on the assassination according to george rusty rhodes executive director of the citizen's group committee to investigate political assassinations rhodes fascinated the audience for nearly three hours thursday night m packard lab auditorium as he produced evidence which allegedly contradicts the commission's conclusion that lee harvey oswald acted alone m assassinating president john f kennedy m dallas november 22 1963 the audience was able to relive the assassination through film taken by abraham zapruder a bystander ac cording to rhodes the film is technically illegal to show and has been suppressed for 12 years because it clearly snows the fatal third bullet hit kennedy at the right side of his head and not the rear as the commission originally concluded according to rhodes the medical examiners said cause of death was a gunshot wound to the right temple at the time the president was struck with the fatal bullet however oswald was 500 ft behind him either there were two gunmen or oswald used boomerang bullets rhodes said oswald's weapon was an italian rifle made m 1938 and purchased for 12.78 according to the commission report when the gun was found by police and test-fired it was discovered that the scope was wobbly and inoperative the firing pin was almost disintegrated and the trigger mechanism was faulty rhodes said the scope was found to be off to the right 5 m to 40 yds he said oswald whose marine record showed he was a poor marksman had 4.8 to 5.6 seconds to fire three shots rhodes said the warren commission had expert marksment from all over the country try to duplicate oswald's feat using the repaired gun and firing at stationary targets 25-50 yds away it took 8.8 seconds for the men to hit the target three times rhodes said the commission concluded it was to oswald's advantage that the scope was off to the right because kennedy's car was moving off to the right when he was shot rhodes said he was highly doubtful of the commission's theory that the first bullet made seven holes m kennedy and texas governor john connolly the zapruder film shows that as ken nedy is reacting to the first shot connolly has not yet been struck according to rhodes 1.8 seconds elapsed between the time kennedy reacted to the first shot and connolly was struck what did the bullet do pause m mid-air for 1.8 seconds while it was deciding whom to hit next rhodes asked according to rhodes the bullet recovered from connolly's body was m almost perfect condition although it had allegedly passed through two bodies if we can show kennedy and connolly were struck by different bullets we can prove a fourth shot was fired thereby discrediting the warren commission report rhodes said rhodes urged all those who have any question concerning the validity of the warren commission report to write to their congressmen m support of house resolution 204 which seeks to have the rusty rhodes b&w photo by marsh saturday quizzes legal says forum i chairman saturday quizzes are legal under university rules according to curtis clump member of the education policy committee ed pol clump who was also chairman of forum i which abolished saturday classes made the statement m response to a letter sent by hildy shandell 77 acting chairman of the forum sub committee on academic regulations shandell's letter questions the legality of the quizzes on the grounds that the procedures regulations and requirements pr&r guidelines do not give permission for such quizzes clump stated that the saturday morning quizzes were scheduled by the registrar during the sixth and eleventh weeks so there should be no doubt about their legality clump also pointed out however that some final exams have been given on saturdays which would set a precedent for the morning quizzes clump stressed the fact that the saturday morning quizzes and the possibility of saturday classes were two different issues he said the quizzes should not be thought of as a forewarning of saturday classes when questioned about shandell's recommendation of a thursday tuesday thursday sequence for testing which would eliminate saturday quizzes clump said ed pol was reviewing the idea he noted that shandell's recommendation would be illegal according to the pr&r guidelines because the third quiz would not fall m the sixth or eleventh week clump also said the saturday morning quizzes were instituted for the benefit of the student rather than have three quizzes m a row or two m one day this seemed to be the logical solution he ad ded see warren
