lehigh university brown and white 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 40 bethlehem pa friday march 26 1976 new residence policies on integration lottery announced to students by ken bandler new residence policies including sweeping changes m the existing residence lottery sytem and several changes m the distribution of integrated and coed housing were announced by university ad ministrators wednesday the policies which stem from a recent board of trustees decision were presented at a meeting ofjhe forum's residence sub committee over 150 students attended wednesday's meeting to protest the new policies due to the number of complaints drager met with student living unit representatives yesterday to revise the original housing configurations an additional meeting of the residence subcommittee was held last night to finalize the housing plans over 60 students attended see related story page 5 although the administration had assured forum leaders that no an nouncement would be made prior to the first subcommittee meeting report of the changes was leaked by drager to two student organizations tuesday according to the revised configuration stevens house currently an integrated male house will become a freshman male dorm beardslee and smiley currently upperclass male houses were to be changed to integrated male dorms ac cording to the original configuration however at yesterday's meeting it was decided that they retain their present status in addition all sections of mc clintic-marshall will be integrated next year stoughton a freshman female house and dravo a freshman male house will be coed freshman dormitories sections b 5 and for a sections m dravo will ac commodate women next year further upperclass men will be allowed to live m richards house next year it was also decided yesterday that palmer and emery houses currently integrated female dorms would be changed to freshman female and fresh man male dorms respectively hot issue over 150 students attended a forum residence subcommittee meeting wednesday to hear administrators explain new residence halls policies the students expressed dissatisfaction with the new procedures which included selected elimination of upperclass squatter's rights and additional distribution of women and freshmen m residence halls refer frampton plans concert at university peter frampton is coming to lehigh april 9 the former humble pie member's fifth album frampton comes alive is number two m album sales as rated by billboard magazine student activities council sac concert chairman todd heck said frampton's popularity has been coming to a head so his price has more than doubled since the first negotiation heck said almost all the tickets will have to be sold for the sac to break even heck ad ded if the concert does not sell out it's doubtful that any major recording artist could sell out at lehigh he said a limited amount of advance tickets will be sold for 6.50 on march 28 for the benefit of lehigh students and students attending surrounding lvaic colleges only heck said tickets will be limited to six per person with an 1.d he added south side deal would house 2 1 6 by jeff bloom & dave klucsik last of a three-part series last summer the university almost entered into a lease arrangement of south side townhouses but political pressure exerted by top bethlehem city officials prevented the deal from taking place lehigh was anxious to lease the 36 birkel estate townhouses for many reasons for one thing after renovations 216 students could be accommodated m the houses according to eric ottervik vice president for planning 200 more beds are needed to meet the campus present and future housing demand in addition the proposed lease arrangement afforded the university the luxury of providing adequate un dergraduate housing for at least the next 10 years without making a permanent commitment because of uncertainties concerning future enrollment the university is shying away from building or purchasing a structure for undergraduate housing because it would not own but lease the properties under the deal the university would be able to provide housing to students on the south side without ex panding beyond the boundary lines established m the university master plan while university officials claim that the plan is not legally binding lehigh ex pansion outside the plan without prior permission from the city would un doubtedly lead to an onslaught of severe criticism leveled at the university by south side community leaders as well as city officials many south side community leaders and residents are still bitter when they recall lehigh expansion north of packer avenue m the early 19605 one south side community leader still refers to this university expansion as the rape of the south side through the proposed lease arrangement lehigh could provide ball cites u.s.'s limitless future in opening blaustein lectures by sally velthaus the bicentennial year is a good time to reflect calmly on our brilliant past and our limitless future said george ball former ambassador to the united nations and under secretary of state ball speaking on the american tradition m foreign policy said the u.s must try to see through the present complexities m the world the u.s.'s role m the last three decades has changed drastically according to ball thirty years ago the u.s was the only dominant world power but is now trying to keep a balance with the ussr said ball as long as the u.s maintains nuclear equality with the soviet union keeps nato defenses m repair and the west european governments remain com mitted to the same objectives of freedom a direct challenge to major western nations is improbable said ball the political influence of the soviet union is weakening all over the world noted ball no longer is the kremlin the unchallenged vatican of the communist church he said new republics are seeking money and arms from moscow and not instruction and guidance said ball instead of being seduced by detente the u.s should keep up military guard and encourage our western allies to work with us m maintaining the nato defen ses he said detente should be put to the test by the halt of economic and industrial help to the ussr to develop their natural resources ball said china should not be ignored according to ball the chinese have questioned the u.s.'s soft line toward the kremlin ball schlesinger to speak former secretary of defense james r schlesinger , will give the third of the blaustein lectures tonight at 8:30 pm m grace hall said this explains kissinger's willingness to escalate supplies to client tribes added ball with the increasing world population we are beginning to feel our political isolation m a hostile world ball said america will
