field of ten entries the editorial staff of the lehigh brozvn and white will open a com petition for vacancies which are now existant beginning tuesday afternoon at 4.00 o'clock in the brozvn and white office drown hall there are ten associate ed itorships now open : one junior three sophomores and six fresh men these positions will be filled by men securing the largest number of points in regards to character of write-ups scoops english — a grammar b rhetoric punctual ity and interest no man will be elected who does not submit and have accepted a creditable amount of work it is hoped that all men who have ability in this line of work will turn out and that they will realize that the college newspaper is one of the most vital points in university life arcadia institutes student index system complete files containing records of individual ability of new men to be kept in gym under the direction of the arca dia the university is this year insti tuting a new system of card-index ing the freshman class in order to have a complete record of the men's activities before entering college while the primary object is to know what a man's athletic endeavors were during prep school days it is considered almost equally impor tant to keep track of musical dra matic and literary ability and this is also entered on the cards sta tistics are kept of the age weight and height of the men and also where they prepared for lehigh the freshmen are asked whether they have taken part in any of the following fifteen sports and if so where and what part : football baseball basketball track cross country wrestling lacrosse tennis swimming soccer rifle shooting boxing gymnastics fencing and golf this information will be on file in the gym office and it is ex pected that in the future it will be of great use to team managers from these cards it can easily be ascertained the sports in which a tttstt ii in i ,<■1 before entermg college and then he can be person ally urged to try out for the team within a short time this system should improve the calibre of all lehigh teams by bringing out ev ery man • who has had experience in the sport this plan of keeping a record of pre-college activities has been for some time in vogue at the univer sity of virginia and is also in use at the university of pennsylvania where it is operating very success fully the arcadia is showing it self to have a great interest in the development of the college and this reform receives the hearty approval of the faculty and student body soccer got under way with a bang last week when about forty candi dates reported to captain w brew er on the opening day of college and with practically the entire team of last year in college prospects for a most successful season appear ex ceedingly bright for the first time in several years lehigh's soccer squad is to be coached throughout the entire season in recent years coaching the men fell upon the team captain but the athletic committee has secured the services of h j carpenter to devote his entire time to developing the squad during the present season coach carpenter is well-known throughout this vi cinity as a player of note and a dev otee of the sport he being a regis tered referee and the secretary of the bethlehem district soccer as sociation his seven years experi ence as goal-tender with the cham pionship bethlehem steel com pany's team should enable him to develop a strong aggregation to rep resent the brown and white practice have been held every ! monday wednesday and friday on upper taylor field and the squad is fastly rounding into form with a number of last year's squad again out for the team and several prom ising new players the competition for regular berths on the eleven has already become keen the presence of a regular coach on the field has effected better work from the men and lehigh should make a fair bid for the intercollegiate champion ship of pennsylvania continued on page registrar assumed duties at the quaker col lege august 1 last july 22 the board of mana gers of swarthmore college an nounced the appointment of ray mond walters former registrar of lehigh university as dean of swarthmore to succeed william a alexander who resigned to go to indiana university mr walters is a graduate of le high with the class of 07 and af ter working for a newspaper for four years returned to lehigh to serve his alma mater except for the time he was a captain in the army during the war he was at le high in the capacity of registrar he was well-liked at lehigh and his pleasant manner and winning smile leave pleasant memories of him here the following paragraphs w r ere clipped from the first number of the swarthmore phoenix concerning mr walters raymond walters former reg istrar of lehigh university is the new dean of swarthmore college announcement of this appointment by the board of managers was made on july 22 mr walters took up his new duties on august 1 suc ceeding william a alexander who resigned last june to accept the post of librarian at indiana university dean walters comes to swarth more backed by a splendid record in varied lines of activity not only in educational work especially as a registrar but also in journalism music and in military service to his country dean walters stands prom inently for the past ten years dean walters has been registrar and assistant professor of english at lehigh university besides hav ing served on the staffs of several newspapers 1907-1911 he is the author of two books and of sixty magazine articles on educational and musical subjects as secre tary of the american association of collegiate registrars he made a study of the collegiate grades of eminent engineers which attracted wide attention the new dean is a member of the executive co nmittee of the fa mous bach choir of bethlehem and managed for charles m schwab the four concerts of the choir in new york city continued on page two opening meeting of y m c a delayed fall practice in lacrosse under way the fall lacrosse practice has started and some forty men includ ing many of last year's squad and a host of new men have reported to manager l l drew all new men interested in la crosse should take advantage of this fall practice as there will not be any scrimmaging the main idea being to teach the new men the art of handling the stick so that they will be able to make rapid progress in the spring as the athletic association does not have enough sticks to go around all new men are asked to provide their own and manager drew will be glad to assist anyone having difficulty in procuring a stick the prospects look bright for turning out another championship team this season as there are enough of last year's team left to provide an excellent nucleus around which to build the squad will be coached this fall by charles lattig and dr w l estes both of whom are inter ested in the sport no definite schedule for next season has been decided upon but games will prob ably be arranged with johns hop kins swarthmore perm rutgers and perm state the old men who are back are headed by captain c c strauch who is also aiding in man coxe and de mover lehigh university went to platts burg this summer nearly one hun dred and fifty strong and came home triumphant of the 147 stu dents who attended the camp 130 were freshmen taking the basic course and 17 were sophomores and upper classmen taking the ad vanced course so it is easily seen that most of the credit belongs to this year's sophomore class of all the honors was made com pulsory by your institutional au thorities you are also aware of the fact that you had approximate ly 150 students at this cam the seventh company was made up entirely of lehigh stu dents and it carried off the honor of being the best company in camp as graded and determined by the inspection department grades were awarded for each individual student attending the camp and were consolidated by institutions at the close of camp the average of all lehigh students was above that of any other institution so that your institution carries the unique disr tinction of having had the team has been practicing however the line up which starts the game to-morrow is expected to show greater strength than has been looked for as under the intensive training of coach click progress has been rapid susquehanna university makes its initial appearance at lehigh on saturday little was known of their football team until last season when it sprang into prominence by holding holding colgate to a tie score and playing several other good games this year susque hanna is expected to have a strong er team than that of last season six letter men are back and the new material is of fairly good cal ibre susquehanna's line is heavy and will probably outweigh the le high line the squad has been prac ticing for thee weeks often as much as seven hours a day and is in good trim for the opening socie ty which has been inactive for a number of years the meeting will be held in drown hall and every senior met is urged to be present after organization members of the three other classes will be invited to join the society it is planned to get the society on a good sound ba sis once more and then to secure well-known metallurgists to address meetings of the society at intervals throughout the school year great value can be obtained from such a society both from a metal lurgical and from a social stands point and the prospects are very bright for a successful re-organiza tion several of the
