lehigh university brown and white 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 13 bethlehem pa tuesday october 21 1975 reduction in forum size urged by mary tarduno sterrett weaver lead gridders over delaware blue hens basted by engineers by dan solis-cohen the traditional lehigh football schedule ends with old rival lafayette but with saturday's 35-32 victory over the blue hens of delaware the gridders took a great leap towards extending this season's ftplay into post-season ncaa play joe sterrett completed 20 of 27 passes for 232 yards and mark weaver scored three touchdowns in the game weaver's 97-yard kickoff return and some big defensive plays in the fourth quarter keyed the victory weaver's return came midway through the third quarter just after the blue hens scored to cut the engineers lead to 21-17 i weaver took the ensuing kickoff at the three-yard line and ran right up the middle of the field cut to his left and sprinted down the sideline for the score greg pierog's extra point gave the gridders a little bit more breathing room 28-17 delaware scored on a 40-yard pass play from bill zwann to fullback nate beasley to cap a seven play 53-yard drive on their first possession of the second half following weaver's return the blue hens drove 76-yards in nine plays to cut the lead to 28-23 beasley and zwann again hooked up for the score this one covering ten yards i believe a reduction in the size of the forum should be tried in order to increase the concentration of members truly willing to work said ira schulman 76 forum representative to the board of trustees schulman and steven krawiec assistant professor of biology are sole members of a forum sub-committee assigned to study the re-evaluation of the forum done by forum v according to gary locacca 76 vice-chairman of the forum lacocca said i am against any reduction in the size of the forum and i know that the forum steering committee feels this way my experience during the last three years on the forum has shown me that it doesn't take much interest or effort to get elected schulman said all that is necessary is a very healthy popular base at a fraternity or residence hall and a name that appears in the brown and white he added schulman said that the number of forum members should be reduced in order to make the election process more difficult thus insuring the election of truly interested members until the election to the forum requires a serious dedicated effort on the part of the people running the forum will not begin to reach a role of maintaining a truly efficient committee structure schulman said he explained that the efficiency of the forum and especially that of the committees is hindered when students who lack interest are elected many forum members do not attend committee meetings or do not care schulman said it's hard to run a sub committee of three people if two are disinterested he added schulman said that he and krawiec had spoken last year about reduction of the forum to 40 students 40 faculty members and five administrators they felt the number of administrators should be kept the same schulman explained because the forum provides a necessary link with the administrative personnel they bring us the facts when the forum was established membership was set at 60 students 60 faculty members and five administrators this is not a sanctified number that can't be changed schulman stated when an organization starts out with a constitution specifying 60 students 60 faculty and five administration members people hold on to that number for fear of disrupting the organization he added according to lacocca a reduction in the size of the forum would be a big mistake most people claim that a reduction in the size of the forum would get people of higher quality involved but it doesn't work this way he said if the forum membership were reduced from 60 to 40 student and faculty members it doesn't mean that the 40 students elected would all work he added we could use more people we could do so much more lacocca said we don't have the total manpower now to look at everything so we set priorities he said when the subject of reducing the size of the forum was brought up at a steering committee meeting two weeks ago the committee felt that it was not a major issue lacocca said lacocca explained that the people who originally set up the forum worked hard at reaching the figure of 60 60 and 5 i think it works fine lacocca said he added however that if an organization is not working at 100 per cent efficiency because of attendance the situation is not improved by reducing membership to reach an attendance quota it is necessary to find out why people are not attending he said lacocca said that the forum is using a computerized attendance system this year after monday's meeting oct 20 we will start seeing who has not been coming to regular forum and committee meetings and we will formally censure those people lacocca disagreed with the idea that it is easy to get elected to the forum no one is guaranteed election to the forum he said he explained that the person who gets elected is the one who campaigns the hardest talks to people and who has a name that people hear and often see in the ira schulman ; b&w photo by menard mark weaver 42 leaves defenders behind on his 97-yard kickoff return against delaware blue hens mike randolph 29 and paul schweizer 38 fail to catch weaver as jim gallagher 35 and tom giordani 75 run interference for the engineers the return went for a touchdown report explains tuition rise expenditures by jeff swiatek greater increases in tuition have been necessary to offset slower gains in other sources of income according to a report presented at the forum administration committee meeting last week by richard spriggs vice president of administration the report covering unrestricted in come and expenditures from 1972 through 1976 also shows percentage-of-the-budget increases in general administration employe benefits and student aid in struction faculty salaries and student service categories decreased i.e constitute a smaller part of budget ex penditures than four years ago although unrestricted income has grown during the four years endowment recovery of indirect costs and other miscellaneous income have not risen fast enough to continue contributing their share of the income tuition has therefore been increased to make up for the slower gains an increase of income also occurred in auxiliary enterprises which include room and board employee benefits showed the biggest percentage increase of all expenditures since 1972-73 this was mainly the result of federally-mandated laws pertaining to pensions social security and retirement see engineers page 12 see
