trying to increase their enrollment of minority students earl richardson a member of the association of black collegia tes abc is the recruitment chairman at lafayette college according to richardson his job is to contact minority students through different mailings and letters college nights are also important for talking with students and answering any questions they might have he said richardson said he also talks to people m trenton n.j his hometown and tries to interest them m lafayette he said he feels it is good for minority students at lafayette to contact their friends at home who are planning on college careers at lafayette there are now about 60 black students compared to 70 last year richardson said this is because a larger senior class was graduated last june minority students enjoy lafayette due to its friendly atmosphere he said barry mccarty associate director of admissions at lafayette said the ad missions office recruits spanish students as well as black students through mailing mccarty said he enjoys his job and is getting very good cooperation harry robinson director of student assistance at franklin and marshall college works part-time with the ad missions office as the minority recruiter trips to different high schools are his principal method of recruiting minority students at f&m there are now about 70 black students enrolled a decrease from last year robinson said adding this is due to a large graduating class according to robinson the minority students enjoy franklin and marshall when questioned about a specific goal he remarked to find as many students as we can george gibbs dean of admissions and freshmen at muhlenberg college said no specific person is assigned to a task called minority recruitment it is the respon sibility of our entire staff in this regard we supplement our regular secondary school visits with visits m specific areas where we are most apt to reach minority students minority enrollment has not changed for the last two years at muhlenberg gibbs said minority students seem to like the school pretty well edward l collymore director of social action at villanova university said there is not really a minority program the program at villanova is primarily for educationally disadvantaged students he said recruiting is done through the ad missions office greg wright admissions counselor announces new guidelines for staff hiring by andrea kaplan new guidelines for affirmative action issued by the department of labor are an indication that the government is serious about enforcing the hiring of minority group members according to dr lora liss affirmative action officer at the university the new format developed by the office of federal contract compliance requires a refinement of the work force analysis liss said a work force analysis is a listing of every employee m the university by job title illustrating the distribution of minority grouping m each job classification the government expects us to eliminate all under-utilization liss said she explained under-utilization as a comparison derived from the work force analysis of the number working with the number available if minorities are under utilized then affirmative action must spell out exactly how long it will take to recruit minorities liss said however minorities cannot be recruited unless there is a job turnover at the university which affirmative action must clarify annually for the department of labor she added failure to comply with government regulations poses a sanction for the university withholding of research and scholarships funds liss said the criteria for minority recruitment will be the same as all other university hiring there was never any lowering of standards and there will be none liss confirmed liss expectations are a multitude of qualified individuals applying as a result of the expansion of recruitment policies subsequent objective standards for criteria for hiring must be established so that minorities are not subject to more rigorous standards liss said the first draft of the statistical computation from the work force analysis will hopefully be finished by nov 1 she said adding there is not enough time to dig into statistics undergraduate population faces future reduction by debbie kelly the undergraduate population of the university could be reduced to 3,200 m the 1980s this is one possible solution to the anticipated problem of a decreased number of 18-year-old candidates m the 1980s according to brian g brockway dean of the college of business and economics some faculty and administration members are taking a look at the possibility of reduced enrollment m the future and at the resulting consequences eric ottervik vice president for plan ning said a decrease m enrollment m the future would be disastrous because there would still be residence halls classroom facilities and professors especially tenured faculty to meet the needs of 4,000 students preston parr vice president for student affairs said no serious suggestion has been made concerning an enrollment reduction but it would be prudent for the administration to take a look at some things down the pike brockway emphasized that the decision to cut the student body to 3,200 would have to be made well m advance so faculty and administration budgets could be cut by a natural attrition over several years it's better to worry about it m 1975 than m 1980 he said measures such as not replacing retiring professors would naturally lead to a gradual decrease m expenditures and consequently the university could reduce the tuition proportionately by 1981-82 brockway added brockway said a second solution to the problem of a decreased number of 18-year old candidates m the 1980s would be to adjust the educational programs to the caliber of the incoming students to provide more instruction m the basics he said the third alternative according to brockway would be to maintain the current size and caliber of the student expansion a possibility for business college by debbie kelly brian brockway dean of the college of business and economics said he would go along with the board of trustees if they decide to expand the business college his statement was m response to harold mohler chairman of the board of trustees who said recently the business school will probably grow due to demands placed on it from the outside world allocation for the addition to drown hall was cut out of the new century fund phase ii because no major changes could be made with the money provided brock way said brockway said he cannot be adamant about holding down enrollment m the business college because the university must remain flexible to allow for students personal desires although expansion would not be the choice of the business college it's just a fact of life brockway explained at the moment he said more than 1,000 undergraduates are m the business college whereas only 800 are supposed to be enrolled brockway gave credit to the admissions office for cutting freshmen enrollment this year from 200 to 140 but he added it will take time to actually decrease to 800 another over-enrollment problem ad missions faces is the number of transfer students from other schools according to brockway we can't seem to stem the tide of transfers from other colleges he said it was implied brockway said that if the business college enrollment were to expand then more faculty would be required if the 1 million allocation provided by phase ii for drown hall were con centrated on making interior renovations rather than a new addition brockway said then more worthwhile change would be made for the money a slow process of renovation will involve making one change at a time to drown hall brockway said the cit financial corp has given money to renovate a room for the use of management arthur an derson and co an accounting firm has contributed to the renovation of the computer lab he said coppee hall will be used by the business college when chandler chemistry building opens brockway said as the plan evolves there will be mostly specialized rooms such as a computer
