mohler also discussed a number of opics concerning the university including athletic scholarships the acc sororities usiness college expansion and minority recruitment tuition increases are a reflection of nflation mohler said he said there is no end m sight at this point because of the general economic conditions recent budget surpluses will be used towards reducing future tuition increases mohler said the increases have been more moderate than at other schools he added referring to cutbacks m administration spending mohler stated the trustees keep pressure on the administration to keep costs down he added the administration has been sensitive to the fact that tuition increases are undesirable the athletic and convocation center ( acc should be completed m three to five years mohler said lack of funds to build the arena and expected cost overruns have caused the delay the acc will be a key addition to campus mohler added mohler said a smaller version of the arena is undesirable because it would be too limited m capacity the project can no longer be reconsidered he said because it was an integral part of the new century campaign despite the granting of financial assistance to wrestling star mike frick mohler said i don't think there is a double standard m giving scholarships he added that there is support both for and against no-need athletic scholarships adding that actions taken by other schools must be considered i don't see how you can deny the sororities financial backing said mohler considering the economic support the university gives the fraternities he ad ded however that present economic conditions must be taken into con sideration increasing minority enrollment remains a high priority mohler said i can ap preciate the situation since we have the same problem m industry he said ad ding the university has taken some steps m the right direction the business school will probably grow due to demands placed on it from the outside world mohler said by ron winters administration advised against law school j ralph lindgren professor of philosophy and chairman of law school committee ii has advised the ad ministration not to institute a small law chool law school iii at the university law school committee i originally xplored the possibility of building a law chool m the new century fund's phase ii plans the estimated cost was 5 million it was found however that this large sum of money could not be allocated without seriously conflicting with other new century fund projects brian brockway dean of the college of business and economics researched a scaled-down version of the law school law school ii the purpose of law school committee ii was to examine the merits and feasibility by bill kimball satuday classes recommended saturday classes are still a necessity for aiding m the scheduling process and reducing conflicts according to registrar james wagner the number of conflicts m scheduling last year was twice the amount ever faced the registrar's office noted m a memo last year no action has been taken to alleviate this problem wagner said adding the same conditions will exist this year the only alternative is to allow more scheduling time for classes and saturday is the best solution he said illustrating the seriousness of the problem wagner noted many students have no break m their schedule to allow for lunch while others are totally excluded from necessary courses dut to conflicts when saturday classes were eliminated m 1971 a poll of 400 students was taken by curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering the majority of students agreed with the decision but that same 80 per cent majority went on to clarify their choice by agreeing with the opinion on the questionnaire which stated that if con flicts m scheduling came about saturday classes should be reinstated it is this fact wagner said which has been forgotten the reasons for the rise m conflicts wagner said are the greater freedom m choice of courses required for graduation the increase of interdisciplinary majors and minors the continuation of the five year programs and the general study program the high percentage of single section courses because of economic reasons and the elimination of saturday classes the rescheduling of saturday classes is the only solution to help decrease the conflicts he said although there are no saturday classes now there are saturday quizzes ac james wagner language instructors win in struggle to keep jobs by lew goldstein an attempt by the administration to give terminal contracts to five untenured members of the foreign language depart ment was aborted last june according to duncan b gardiner assistant professor of russian gardiner also said the administration tried to appoint joseph maurer depart ment chairman pro tern as chairman last may without consulting the untenured members of the department as far back as january of this year the administration was interested m replacing anna herz as chairman of the depart ment gardiner said they talked to all the tenured members of the faculty sometime m february or march and at that time a number of them were told that all five untenured members were going to be given terminal contracts that is contracts through august 1976 he added gardiner said the untenured rrofessors learned about the meeting although the tenured members of the department were told to keep this information confidential gardiner said foreign language department members believed the new chairman would come from within their own ranks instead maurer former chairman of the classics department was appointed it also became known that they had not consulted with the younger members of the department he said an emergency meeting of the dean's advisory council which consists of all the heads of the departments was called and this occurred somewhere m the middle of may he added gardiner said john hunt iean
