bethlehem pa , tuesday february 8 1977 vol 88 — no 31 215-866-0331 title ix recommendations said to lack goals clarity by nettie taylor many of the recommendations included m the university's title ix of the education amendment of 1972 self evaluation report are vague and lack a clear purpose according to a report by brian finn chairman of the forum student life committee finn's report was submitted to austin gavin chairman of the student affairs equal opportunity steering committee and executive con sultant to the university president in absence of such a clear purpose these studies will lose meaning and probably never be completed satis factorily finn said the title ix report is the result of a study conducted by the university last semester that evaluates current policies and attitudes concerning the admission and treatment of students to determine any sex and minority discrimination finn criticized the report's failure to present the effects of university policies such as the female quota and student housing on the relations between men and women students little reference was made to the impact of these practices on the university community he said although many recommendations call for collection of data such as the minority percentage m the university graduate school the report lacks any mention of what is to be done with this data once collected finn said also many of the recommendations have no deadline for completion he said finn suggested that to insure that the recommendations made m the report are being followed the administration should make a progress report to the forum at the end of this year and subsequently as needed members of the forum student life committee also submitted a report criticizing the title ix study the com mittee suggested that the report place false alarm fire trucks leave delta sigma phi after finding no fire there saturday nig*ll a mght du,b had overheated and the plastic lamp shade had begun to melt there were no damages and no injuries low f rat cum creates concern by joe burke the dean of students office is offering educational and cultural programs to fraternities this semester as one means towards getting fraternities out of a socializing rut ac cording to hershel dorney assistant to the dean of students the rut may be a factor m the drop of the all-fraternity cumulative average m recent years dorney said the program will be similiar to those implemented this semester m residence halls he said the cumulative average of men living m fraternities usually has been lower m the past than the average of men who are not m fraternities according to figures compiled by dorney see graph below last semester non-fraternity men averaged 2.66 while the fraternity average was 2.48 and 0.18 point difference for the past six semesters the fraternity cumulative average has been between 0.14 and 0.21 points lower than the average of men who are not m fraternities in the recent past however the differences between the two averages were smaller for the 13 semesters between fall 1967 and fall 1973 fraternity averages were usually less than 0.10 points lower than the non-fraternity mens average one semester fall 1971 the fraternity average was 0.03 points higher dorney said that an overabundance of social functions m fraternities may be a factor m the drop of the all-fraternity cum fraternities need to get out of a socializing rut revolving around a keg of beer he said the programs already planned for the fraternities include panel discussions by university professors on oil spills and capital punishment a lecture on the assassination of john f kennedy and a cultural exchange opportunity with six german professional actors is also planned according to dorney dorney said he would initially deal with fraternities in terested m the programs hoping that others will follow the example carl bosch 77 interfraternity council ifc president pointed out that several fraternities have already responded discrimination conference planned the student affairs equal opportunity steering committee is planning a con ference concerning sex discrimination at the university preston parr vice president for student affairs and com mittee member announced last week the conference planned for march 25 through 27 will be held at the kirkridge conference-workshop center m the poconos parr stated burget lakey of philadelphia will be the coordinator for the conference parr said lakey a very skilled and sensitive program director has extensive ex perience with workshops according to parr the purpose of the workshop is to reach an agreement on the attitudes necessary to end discrimination at the university parr said he said the members could try to spread these ideas throughout the university the committee is responsible for the title ix of the education amendment of 1972 report on discrimination parr said that if the conference is to be successful it must not directly consider the title ix report but discuss the issue of young trustee chosen to speak at convocation by sue schautz reginald jennings 70 young alumnus trustee has been selected as the forum viii convocation speaker according to david amidon chairman of the forum vh and urban studies lecturer jennings a dynamic speaker was chosen because of his association with the university amidon said a speaker connected with the university and who could talk about it was preferred over an outsider amidon explained top ranking older executives who graduated from the university were considered as
