vol 88 — no 25 bethlehem pa tuesday december 7 1976 215-866-0331 drop of quota might be asked of trustees in april lewis says by eileen canzian and ed bogucz the administration may ask the board of trustees to drop the university's 20 per cent quota on the enrollment of undergraduate women as early as the trustees april meeting according to university president deming lewis in an interview thursday with brown and white editors lewis also said the administration hopes to have figures ready to announce next year's tuition increase at the forum meeting wednesday lewis said it is conceivable tuition will go up by more than the 250 annual increase called for m long range budget projections he does not think the university's operating reserve should be allowed to become more than about 2 million the fund now stands at 2.01 million lewis also said that if the university were to run a large budget surplus the money probably would be used either to help offset tuition increases or to pay for university improvements the university will try to include m the 1977-78 budget to be submitted to the trustees m january money for three new staff positions one m the admissions office one m the research office and one to operate the saucon valley ie _ house — i_ie positions of vice president for planning which lewis pushed to create three years ago and vice president for administration possibly could be consolidated although he added he does not think this will happen m the near future the draft of a new university 10-year plan assumes thai the university's 20 per cent quota on the admission of un dergraduate women will be abolished lewis said he hopes background work on a proposal to the drop quota will be completed by the april trustee meeting so the admissions office could take this into account for at least the end of the selection process for next year's freshman class trustee approval is needed for the quota to be dropped lewis said he thinks the trustees would be receptive tc increasing the number of women here he added however the trustees may want to replace the quota with a numerically higher one rather than abolishing i in ussif deming lewis treasurer glick at retirement age will quit in 1978 by anne fleming university vice president and treasurer elmer glick who this year reached the official university retirement age of 65 will continue m his post until june 30 1978 for each employe the university pays money into a pension plan until the em ploye reaches 65 although retirement does not necessarily ensue normally university employes retire at the end of the fiscal year m which they reach age 65 said glick but i have decided to remain another year glick said part of this time will be spent working with his successor who has not yet been named by university president deming lewis glick said he did not know who would replace him adding i have no part m the decision process in describing his duties as treasurer and as secretary of the university board of trustees glick said his responsibilities blanketed all aspects of the university in addition to the yearly preparation of the budget glick's office handles all university financial transactions in cluding payroll dining service ex penditures bookstore operations and all elmer glick winning move after two days and three rounds of wrestling at the perm state invitational it took this takedown and three point near fall to all but lock up the title for the engineers trailing by two points with less than fifteen seconds left m their 190-pound final freshman mike brown put bill betrand of perm state on his back to grasp victory from the hands of defeat the engines wenv on to capture the invitational when don mccorkel followed brown onto the mat and defeated mark stepanovich of navy see story page 12 forum to vote tomorrow on 2-year calendar plan by joe burke the joint forum-edpc jalendar committee has accepted a two-year university calendar proposal which calls for freshman orientation and fall registration at the end of august there wiu be a four-day weekend break m oc tober one at thanksgiving m the fall semester and exams will take olace before christmas in the spring semester registration will take place around jan 20 there will be a four-day weekend break at the end of february and a week-long midsemester break later on the forum will vote on the proposal at its meeting tomorrow tony ying 79 s member of the calendar committee explained the exact dates for registration and vacations were not decided because of the length of friday's meeting we got fairly close to the exact days they definitely will be decided by wednesday's isv - meeting he said the proposal was submitted by george kane chairman of the department of industrial engineering and a member of the committee it calls for freshmen orientation and fall registration at the end of august during the fall semester there will be a four-day weekend break m oc tober and one at thanksgiving registration for the spring will take place around jan 20 there will be a four day weekend break at the end of february and a week-long midsemester break later on there will be two week days of reading consultation and study rcs before final examinations m each semester both exam periods will be 10 days and first semester exams will end before christ mas kane said there were five areas con sidered m making the proposal first there should be two breaks m each semester for faculty and students second each semester should be 14 weeks third kane said exams for the fall semester should be before christmas fourth there should le two class days kept for rcs and finally exam periods should be at least nine days warren pillsbury calendar committee chairman and associate professor of economics said the university will con tinue to respect religious holidays but not break for them the calendar committee held an open hearing for proposals on wednesday so many proposals were submitted however that the discussion had to be continued at friday's meeting see quota page 4 see glick page 5 inside nurse needed p 4 medieval play p 7 allied confract p 8 climactic win p 12
