lafayette college bookstores toiletry prices compared other college stores lower by robert waldeck the prices the university bookstore charges for toiletries average 30 per cent higher than those charged at four other local colleges according to a recent brown and white survey the brown and white last week com pared prices for 33 health and beauty articles available at the lehigh muhlenberg moravian cedar crest and lafayette bookstores as well as the pantry pride supermarket at carlton avenue and broadway m bethlehem the university bookstore's prices were higher than those charged at all the other schools for every item surveyed i am surprised with these price dif ferences said robert bell director of the bookstore bookstore prices are set by a jobber bell said a jobber is a company that specializes m a certain product he ex plained the bookstore has been dealing with the same jobber for several years bell added the only way the other schools could have lower prices would be to have a see chart page 4 different jobber or to order directly from the company bell said deviations between the prices here and the average prices charged at the other college stores ranged from 168 per cent to 8 per cent a 1-oz tube of clearasil costs 1.85 here while the other college stores average 69 cents a 168 per cent difference pantry pride charges 1.59 for the tube the smallest deviation m price for the items surveyed was for a 20-oz box of cheer detergent the university bookstore charges 69 cents for the box while the other schools average 64 cents pantry pride charges 66 cents housing proposal drafted percentage lottery posed by jerry miller every student who makes it through the proposed residence lottery will be guaranteed university housing even if they waive their squatters rights ac cording to the forum residence sub committee's report drafted last weekend the report will be presented to the forum on nov 15 bypassing the student life committee due to lack of time it is impossible to have the student life committee consider the report reports and motions for the forum's consideration must be submitted one week prior to meetings the proposed residence lottery system would guarantee housing to all incoming freshmen and provide for a graduated percentage lottery system for all rising sophomores juniors and seniors a separate lottery would be held for each class and each class member would draw a lottery number students who pick numbers above a specified cutoff number will have made it through the lottery and would be guaranteed housing m the residence halls system students who do make it through the lottery would be placed on the waiting list students would not be able to pull room mates through the system with him or her roommates would be chosen after the lottery no deposit is required to enter the lot tery but once a student makes it through the lottery he or she must deposit 100 to secure their space the lottery will be run during february at the same time the fraternities and sororities are making final bids to prospective members housing selection for those who make it through the lottery constitutes a major part of the report room selection was broken down into the following areas rh 11 apartments doubles rh-11 suite singles other singles and triples smags is not considered m the room selection portion of the report according to maureen quirk 77 president of the residence halls council the situation at smags m regard to available housing is changing and will be incorporated into the report at a later date the three sororities are considering moving into buildings m smags this would affect the housing configuration of the complex rh-11 apartments according to the proposal rh-11 apartments would be allocated on the basis of a point system the apartments would be allocated before other housing in the point system a rising senior would be given five points if he or she had squatter's rights a rising junior with squatter's rights would receive four points a senior without squatter's rights would get three points a rising junior without squatter's rights would have two points and a rising sophomore would receive one point all rising juniors and seniors living m the residence system have squatter's rights according to the proposal students desiring to live m rh-11 would register at a specific time with their prospective b&w photo by lipka every student who makes it through the residence halls lottery will be guaranteed university housing according to a system proposed by the forum residence sub committee here peter lilienfield 77 subcommittee chairman and maureen quirk 77 rhc president work on the final wording of the proposal funding sought for legal aid booklet by neil mitchell dean of students william quay said he cannot provide funds for printing a legal aid booklet which is being prepared for students by the forum legal action committee lac the lac is planning a mimeographed pilot copy for an initial screening before the expensive printing procedure is un dertaken said hugh flesher university chaplain and former lac chairman the pilot copy should be out m december he said both flesher and dave heidecorn 78 present lac chairman planned on funds from the dean of students office to finance printing of the booklet flesher said he will look for other funding possibly from the forum or preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs he said that quay's statement will not mean writing off the whole idea quay said he has not been approached by anyone concerning the booklet he added that he has not seen anything yet and will not pay for the printing he said his budget cannot cover the printing and there would be no money to pay for student legal aid services if he financed the publication quay said he believes a booklet is not necessary and that a mimeographed pamphlet would suffice he said the booklet would be a waste of money he added that the lac should approach the office of publications for possible printing assistance george beeker director of publications said he would not undertake the publication of the booklet he said that he has too many projects now and his budget does not allow for additional publications beezer suggested inserting several pages of the legal aid booklet into the student handbook he said anything much longer is
