by jennifer morelli news writer kirn campbell the former prime minister of canada spoke tuesday night in lower grace hall on the role of democracy in the post-cold war era as part of the cohen lecture series during canada week campbell's lecture focused on the problems facing the world now that the cold war has ended her main question was if we are sitting down at the table with the russians who are the enemies campbell said the relationship between the united states and canada is a great national friendship and mentioned some similarites be tween the countries including cul tural diversity and a wealthy indus trialized economy campbell expressed fear that the world would stop trying to improve without a common imminent en emy she said the world does not run on auto-pilot lehigh president peter likins thanked campbell for her speech saying she is a combination of intel lectual understanding and personal appeal campbell was the first female prime minister of canada and the roller blades and bore literally the weight of his vehicle on his back with the vehicle rested upon his shoulders the team blasted past the rest of the competition and finished first in a close race the winning fiji team consisted of drivers mason goldberg 97 scth collin 97 ryan wilson 97 rob mackenzie 97 and substi tute driver and rollerbladcr william pielragallo 97 collin said we knew we were in trouble after our vehicle collapse but we cut our losses and came out fighting it was a group effort and we were happy to participate the team that followed in second place was psi upsilon fraternity and delta tau delta fraternity came in third place for the sororities gamma phi beta took top honors coming in first place the gamma phi crew consisted of joy cooper 97 kristin roberts 97 casey bahrenburg 97 and jen callaghan 97 roberts said we are glad to have partici pated it was a great event second place went to alpha phi sorority please see races page a8 phi delta theta fraternity and delta gamma sorority were both found guilty of multiple social policy violations in connection with an annual brunch at phi delt on jan 29 at which alcohol was available without proper supervi sion said terrance curran associate dean of students multiple social policy violations include an unregistered party violation of the byob policy and lack of hand stamps phi delt and dg were put on disciplinary probation through the fall of 1994 phi delt is on social probation through the end of septem ber 1994 delta gamma is on social probation until the end of the spring semester all mem bers of both houses are required to participate in alcohol education programs curran said social probation puts no prohi bition on greek week and both houses were allowed to participate in the events this week the committee also heard hazing charges against phi delt and dg and both houses were found not guilty hazing charges were brought against both houses because cunran said to his understanding of the hazing rules if alcohol is present at a pledge function it is hazing we felt the incident was hazing because alcohol was available without supervision of distribution at a function that was technically for pledges curran said we alleged it was an act of hazing paul mckinnell 95 president of phi delt said the brunch was hosted at phi delt by both houses but phi delt pledges were not in atten dance leah ploussiou 95 president of dg said the social function is an annual event held after bids are given out to pledges to unite the two houses the objective wasn't to get drunk the and members of the audience came up from behind they knew they would not win and got in our way they tugged on our shirts and tried to hold us back at this point mem bers of both fraternities stepped in and started a small rumble as a result of the brawl both teams were disqualified from the event in contrast to the all out brute desire to win sigma chi fraternity's fun in the sun bed featured a tanning bed with participant anne wiederholz 97 lying on top the team strolled leisurely around the track throwing candy to the crowd alex roberts 94 the designer of the bed said we figured it was better to lose in style than win in pain perhaps the most gutsy performance of the afternoon was by the winning phi gamma delta fraternity team a collision midway through the event caused the destruction of the fij i vehicle the team picked up its vehicle and crossed the finish line as if nothing happened for their next heat fiji team member billy although no longer racing at high speeds on the hill as in the past things still were rough at the lower centennials parking lot as the greek week bed race tradition continued tuesday afternoon beds raced two at a time with the winner of each heat moving on each race consisted of one lap around the lot the track's sharp 90 degree turns caused many crashes and colli sions down the first straight away and through the first curve the carts jockeyed for position and often got tangled up with their opponent several beds crashed and fell apart this did not stop most of the contenders from finishing the race though many racers picked up their vehicle and crossed the finish line despite the shape of their bed the fraternity races became especially rough at times including an incident between sigma alpha mv and chi phi fraternities the two teams beds rammed together and each attempted to prevent the other bed from progressing when the two teams attempted to seperate their beds the race turned into a small brawl secu former prime
