brown and white vol 101 no 40 tuesday april 12 1994 senate to re-evaluate funding process of clubs all the lehigh news first by tucker quayle news writer group's funds which would have to lead to further scrutiny of other organizations espe cially the progressive student alliance which is funded by senate araco assures that no funds have been frozen as of yet john place 96 a member of the psa feels clubs should not be refused funds because they please see senate page 6 centered around confusion and controversy the student senate is currently debating what type of guidelines should be set forth in the allocation of money to clubs around campus teresa araco 95 vice president of senate said problems with funding politically oriented when the group submitted its budget to them some of the members of the senate went to the speaker to get a feel if this new club was too politically active araco said after the speaker questions were raised as to whether this new group was politically ac tive in which case senate would not be able to fund its cause with this there was a misunder standing that senate was going to freeze the groups has always been a shady topic we have to re-evaluate and check-up on who we fund and come up with a consistent stance araco said this issue was brought into light when a new organization at lehigh called the objectionavists hosted a pro-abortion speaker on campus senate had given the organization an initial $ 100 starting fund plus more money candidates day gives prospective students a closer look at lehigh by deirdre o'connor news writer jammin for charity ba w pluiln ay rob gutman andrew murphy 97 won the slam dunk contest during chi psi's three-on-three basketball tournament last saturday in efforts to contribute funds to the mercy special learning center student ambassador program feels using students as ambassadors is a good way for prospectives to get a feeling as to what lehigh students are really like a factor that he be lieves is one of the most important aspects perspectives will be watch ing the point of the day was to show students the main selling point of the school astrich said they already know about the academics and the school's reputation lehigh admis sions knows that the students are the best selling point of the school the reason i picked lehigh was because the atmosphere is incredible chris bohan 94 a student am bassador felt the day went well but feels the program needed slight im provements for next year the only thing that bugs me is that things went too quick bohan said there was 45 minutes for every thing and you don't want people sit ting around for too long but you also don't want to make them feel like we don't haveenough time forthem he said there was just too much rush ing around yet bohan still felt the please see candidate page 6 the class of 1 998 came to tour the hills of lehigh s campus meet stu dents and decide if they will spend the next four or more years in beth lehem candidates day was held last saturday for prospective high school students who have already been ac cepted into lehigh to see the cam pus first hand approximately 280 families at tended the various functions and pro grams held during the day lehigh president peter likins along with james gunton dean of the college of arts and sciences and patricia boig director of admissions met with groups of students and their families in the morning to introduce them to lehigh student ambassadors were nomi nated by faculty staff and gryphons to meet with the prospectives as rep resentatives of the lehigh student body fifty-eight ambassadors took prospectives on tours of the campus and showed them all of the dorms where they may start their college lives in next year craig astrich 95 director of the seminars help graduating class by dan walker news writer career questions resumes and considerations of the real world have stressed the minds of graduat ing students all year and especially now with the final stretch of college life winding down the offices of residential ser vices and residence life are spon soring a series of seminars to help graduating seniors adjust to the changes they will encounter as they leave lehigh the seminars are scheduled for the four consecutive tuesdays in april all at 6 p.m in the taylor college blue lounge the program started with a session titled where do i go from here which was held on april 5 this session advised stu dents about how to transform their post-graduation plans into reality the remaining three seminars will be held on april 12 19 and 26 the intent of the program is to provide seniors with some valuable information on topics that maybe they haven't thought about said david joseph director of residential services dealing with sexual harassment supervisors co-workers and living on their own are the kind of new situations many graduating seniors will face in the near future and the seminars are there to help prepare them for what is to come each session consists of a brief informal presentation followed by a question and answer period in which students can have their specific con cerns addressed the second seminar will be pre sented by tim hinkle from the hu man resources office on april 12 and will cover topics about the tran sition many seniors will make from college to the work force issues such as business ethics office politics and career advancement will be the fo cus providing practical advice to help soon-to-be graduates assimilate to their future working environments please see seniors page 4 world news
