community of be thlehem has a long multi-dimen sional history fowler said candidates and their parents also had an opportunity to ask questions about student life at lehigh ozzie breiner dircctorof resi dential services answered vari ous questions on guaranteed hous ing and life at taylor college also marilyn mackes direc tor of career services advised students on declaring majors study abroad programs and in ternship programs candidates met with lehigh students while parents spoke to faculty alumni and current stu dents the potential students were assigned to one of three groups they had a choice from the arts and humanities the social sci ences and the natural sciences dr oscar arias former presi dent of costa rica urged students to strive for a global civil society last tuesday as part of lehigh s celebra tion of latin american heritage in his speech the future of democracy m latin america is there a role for the united states arias lectured on why the world's future prosperity depends on a strong interdependent global community grounded within a system of democ racy the best solution for global peace is global democracy arias said and a civil society is the most important classroom for a citizen m democracy according to the former presi dent the only way for the world to survive is by allowing nations to cooperate economically and restrict isolationism arias said the state of civil soci ety m the united states is disinte grating since communities are no longer held together by common in terests and friendships but rather by businesses in latin america arias said there is an unprecedented strengthening of a civil society he also said past oppression is still vivid m native memory but we must persist m our task for we know that a civil society is the backbone of a democratic society arias said arias also pressed for the reduc tion of arms he said that the arms trade is breeding a vicious cycle of poverty and exploitation of smaller developing nations he added that the united states is jeopardized by its militaristic spend fraternity cleans up community by erik hume newi writer the alpha phi omega service fraternity kicked off the fifth-annual community interaction day saturday mom ing on maginnes lawn this year's event with the theme working today for bethlehem's tomorrow focused on the cleanup of several bethlehem sites including monocacy creek trail yosko park sand island park and the conrail railroad tracks volunteers also assisted m sorting clothes at the larc center m allentown approximately 150 students and staff volunteered for the event please see service page 7 in addition to the brothers and pledges of alpha phi omega brothers from phi kappa theta fraternity the pledge class of delta gamma sorority and sisters from alpha phi sorority participated m the event several non affiliated lehigh students participated as well as stu dents from the bethlehem area school district local area establishments assisted with the event as well mcdonald's and subway both donated food for the participants and third street chicken and ribs gave a free meal to anyone that came m to the restaurant wearing a community interaction day t-shirt the event began at 1 1 am with opening remarks from bryon yoder,'97 vice-president of membership vol 102 no 42 the brown and white tuesday april 25 1995 lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 * all the lehigh news first by abb asia khan news writer the college of arts and sci ences held its annual candidate's day on saturday to help high school seniors and their parents to make their final decision about attending lehigh gary deleo associate dean of the college of arts and sci ences and professor of physics said candidate's day is an ex traordinary learning experience this day is needed to remove any element of uncertainty deleo said the candidates learn about the academic programs and departments and what life will be like m the next four years at le high approximately 250 to3oocan didates showed up with their par ents on saturday candidates were assigned to one of three groups which ac commodated the different time please see arias page 7 ing m that it spend 260 billion on defense alone but neglect funding education and welfare programs m comparison arias said we must ask our selves our friends how is it m times of peace we value guns above people why do citizens spend tax money for the military whilechildren die home less the great reliance on arms trade prohibits smaller nations from suc cessfully developing arias said this reliance is restricting the united states because it has become such an economic crutch in 1993 17 billion m arms were sold by the united states mostly to governments that were not elected by die people of the nation this involvement of the united states m such deals has become increasingly controversial arias said arias concluded on an optimistic note although my words may seem pessimistic i do not despair of the future because i have faith m democ racy and i have faith m the united states we must work to build up our civil society we will find a way together to prove that democracy will last over time he said he finished his speech with a excerpt of walt whitman's ode to democracy we are the race of democracy it is the most splendid race the sun ever shone upon arias lecture was followed by a question and answer session with the audience when asked how the united states should react to the human rights vio lations m china arias was zealous m his conviction that the united states is inconsistent m foreign policy by g abriel a schneider newt writer former president of costa rica asks for global community schedules that the students and par ents have the day started off with a coffee gathering and was followed by an overview of lehigh peter li kins president of lehigh said i had no idea how wonderful lehigh was i didn't discover the strength of this place until i came here m 82 w beall fowler interim dean of the college of arts and sciences spoke about the depth and flexibility of programs offered m the college fowler also referred to the fac ulty students and the
